Question: I want to speak English well. What can I do

Susan If you want to speak English well, I think you should read English books and listen to English radio. You shouldn’t think in your language. You must think in English and speak what you think, and then you will be successful.
William I think the most useful way is watching English films. But you know this all depends on yourself. If you work hard, you can find that speaking English is quite a funny thing. Keep moving! Nothing is impossible!
Ravi Chandra Don’t be afraid and then you will become a good speaker. Speak whatever you want in English in front of a mirror. Try this for just 30 days and then see the results. I hope you will practice this.

Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork. It can make you confident when you are studying. But unluckily, most students don’t know how to take notes. Here are some suggestions.
Write down key facts. If your teacher writes notes on the blackboard, that’s great. You can copy them or write down the most important facts of all in class. Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may focus on (关注) lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the important ones on the blackboard. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may say something important again and again.
Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher to repeat what you miss. If your teacher speaks too fast and you can’t follow what he is saying, you can ask him after class.
paring your notes with your classmates’ can be good for your learning. It can also help you and your classmates correct some mistakes.
Organize. Note-taking also needs organization. Keep notes for each subject in one notebook, so that you can find everything easily when a test comes.
Good note-taking takes time. If you decide to recopy your notes every evening, you’ll surely have less time to watch TV. But you’ll save time in the coming test.

Cleats; Cleats are shoes with plastic or rubber pegs (钉子) on their bottom. The small parts dig into and grip the ground. A cheetah’s claws (爪) always stick out a little, so they’re always ready to go. The tips of the cheetah’s claws dig in and help it run and turn—just like your cleats!
Skis Skis are long and flat. They’re made of plastic and metal. Their smooth bottoms move over snow and ice. A penguin can’t walk fast. When it needs to travel over snow and ice, it uses its smooth stomach instead. The penguin lies on its stomach and pushes itself forward with its feet.
Goggles We don’t see clearly underwater. Swim goggles keep a pocket of air around our eyes. Then we see through air, just like we do on the land. A dolphin’s eyes have a different shape than ours. They see clearly underwater and can make a quick change after lifting their heads.

Everyone has got two personalities — the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don’t show your secret personality when you are awake because you can control your behavior, but when you’re asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. The important position is the one that goes to sleep in.
If you go to sleep on your back, you’re a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don’t like to displease people. So you never express your real feelings. You’re quite shy and you aren’t quite sure of yourself.
If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive person. You worry a lot and you’re always easily upset. You always stick to your own opinions or judgement, but you don’t raise your hopes too much.
If you sleep curled up(蜷缩), you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you’re often defensive. You’re shy and you don’t normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You’re easily hurt.
If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strength and weakness. You’re usually careful. You believe in yourself. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don’t often get sad.

To change their city’s bad traffic, students at the National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia (NIPC) have designed a new type of manned (载人的) plane. It is from a rather usual furniture—a school chair. The group hope to use it to carry people around capital city and even help fight fires.
With eight propellers (螺旋桨) and a school chair for the pilot’s seat, the plane was developed on the outskirts (郊区) of the capital.
“We wanted to solve some problems for our society by making a taxi plane and…inventing for firefighters,” said Lonh Vannsith, 21, the pilot of the plane. They hoped it could reach the upper floors of a building to bring a hose (软管) where a fire truck could not reach.
It took three years of research and development and cost around $20,000 to build. The plane can carry a 60- kilogram pilot and fly for about 10 minutes for a distance of 1 km. When manned, the plane now only rises to as much as four meter. The team plans to improve the design to allow it to take more weights, as well as fly further and more smoothly at a higher level.
“The project faced delay (延期) because of the international transport. Many parts of the plane had to be ordered from abroad,” said Sarin Sereyvatha, who is NPIC’s head of research and development technology.
“Generally, if we make one plane, the cost is expensive but if we make them to sell on the market, the cost will go down,” said Sarin.

Huge beasts, one male and one female, protect the entrances to palaces, temples and other important buildings in China. These lion statues lie at the sides of the entrances to restaurants and shopping malls as well (the pair in the picture stand guard within the Forbidden City). They are also found in Chinese communities around the world. In Chinese culture, the lion is a symbol of strength and good luck and defends against something bad.
Whether made of stone or metal, these big and heavy statues are always used in pairs, one on each side of a door or gate. Looking out on the left (your right as you move towards the entrance) is the male lion, with his right front paw on a ball that stands for the world. On the other side, the female lion rests her left paw on a baby lion, standing for the raising of life. The two lions show us the Chinese idea of yin and yang: opposites that create one whole. In the mouths of some lion statues is a big pearl, a symbol of wisdom and power. These statues are designed so that the pearl can move around but not be removed.
Historians believe lions were brought to China during the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.), a time of increasing trade along the Silk Road. The lions were from Central Asia and were smaller than the more familiar African lion. Interestingly, in China, unlike in the West, these statues are never called “fu dogs”. Here are some interpretations: some think the lions are like Chinese dogs, such as the shih tzu (狮子狗), chowchow and so on. Others say that “fu” sounds like the Chinese word for “success” and the word for “Buddha”.

From fire and the wheel to supercomputers and spacecraft—humans are natural inventors. The things we’ve invented have made our lives safer, smarter and easier.
Our inspirations for these inventions are often practical. We used fire to cook meat. The horse and buggy(马车) were used to move people and goods. But some of our most exciting inventions were inspired not out of necessity(必要性), but out of fantasy and imagination.
One of the best examples of this can be seen in From the Earth to the Moon, a novel written by famous writer Jules Verne. The novel, published in 1867, describes man traveling from our planet to the moon. Just over 100 years later, we would put a man on the moon for real.
But it is perhaps the worlds of film and television that inspire some of the most amazing future technologies. We can see technologies in many films and TV shows that are beyond our abilities to create—so far. But some of them have already come to life.
In fact, it is something like a two-way street—movie and TV show producers are inspired by the tech we already have and create fictional(虚构的) technology that is based upon it, while real-life inventors are inspired by the fantastic creations they see in films and on television.
These two different worlds share a common purpose—to allow us to express and realize our desire(渴望) to create. To give life to things we first see only in our imaginations. As we learn about some of these creations in the following pages, we’ll come to see how they have changed our lives and given us the freedom to unleash(释放) our creativity.
26.The second paragraph mainly talks about ________.
A.why inventions are practical
B.how inventions were inspired
C.what inventions were used for
D.where inventions are used
27.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.films and shows B.our abilities
C.future technologies D.inventors
28.Which of the following is true according to the passage
A.Only inventors have the desire to create.
B.The horse and baggy were not inspired out of necessity.
C.The book From the Earth to the Moon came out after we sent men to the moon.
D.Real-life inventors often get inspirations from the fantastic creations in films and on TV.
29.Where can we most probably see the passage
A.In a novel B.In a movie review
C.In a travel guide D.In a science magazine
New York City in the United States has an unusual way of cleaning up its polluted Hudson River: oysters(牡蛎). It is part of a plan to create a healthier ecosystem in the river by increasing the oyster population. Oysters may help to restore the waters and bring back more sea life. How do oysters do it
Oysters act as natural “water purifiers”. They are filter feeders(滤食动物). That means they take in water through their gills and filter out the food in it, such as algae(藻类), which they then eat. A single adult oyster can filter up to 189 litres of water in a day. As they feed, oysters also filter other harmful things out of the water.
One of these is nitrogen, a chemical found in septic tanks(化粪池). Sometimes nitrogen gets washed into rivers and oceans when it rains. Too much nitrogen in the water causes much algae to grow. The algae uses up the oxygen in the water, which can harm other sea life. Oysters filter nitrogen out of the water and use it to grow their shells.
Oysters also build reefs(珊瑚礁), which are important to the whole ecosystem. Oysters attach(依附)themselves to hard surfaces underwater like rocks. Then more oysters attach themselves on top of those. As the oysters grow, their shells mix together to form a reef. When the new oysters are placed in the Hudson River, they are attached to metal cages in the water. These become the foundations for new reefs, which will get larger as more oysters build on top of them.
Oyster reefs provide homes for plants and animals. Reefs also help to protect the shoreline. Large reefs reduce the effect of waves coming in from the ocean, and help to reduce flooding and protect the coast.
Over the years, the New Yorkers have done a lot for the river, but it will still take tens of years before the new reefs being created in the Hudson River grow as the reefs that were destroyed long ago, but there are already signs that the ecosystem is healthier.
30.The writer leads in the topic through _________.

A.The Hudson River has been clean enough now.
B.The New Yorkers’ effort doesn’t work as expected.
C.There have been too many reefs in the Hudson River.

①With most people staying at home because of COVID-19, live streaming (直播) has become more and more popular. It is not only fun and interesting, but has also provided a new stage (舞台) for traditional culture artists.
②On video sites and apps such as Douyin and Bilibili, many traditional artists are trying live streaming for the first time. Some of them sing Peking Opera, some show their hand-made products, while others perform classical Chinese music.
③Li Jun is a laosheng (old male role) Peking Opera performer with the Shanghai Jingju Theater Company. During the outbreak, the 59-year-old started live streaming for the first time. Unlike performing on a formal stage, Li uses everyday places as his stage, including his backyard, study room, and even the kitchen. Besides singing, Li also teaches viewers about Peking Opera in a humorous way.
④People can ask him questions and get answers directly. “Live streaming has brought this elegant (高雅的) art down to earth,” one viewer said. “It allows young people to get closer to this traditional art and learn more about it.” Up to now Li has more than 6, 000 fans on Douyin, while one of his videos has received 42, 000 views on Bilibili.
⑤Other kinds of artists also see live streaming as a new opportunity. On March 26, the third China Huafu Day, Bilibili live streamed a fashion show. Performers presented beautiful clothes in traditional Chinese styles, including those from the Wei (220—265), Tang (618—907) and Ming (1368—1644) dynasties. During the show, viewers not only enjoyed seeing the clothes but also watching how performers use ancient styles of make-up. For example, one blogger taught people how to draw the guiye eyebrow (桂叶眉) which was a typical make-up style during the Tang Dynasty.
⑥As Guangming Daily noted, live streaming has created a new way in which traditional culture can be kept alive.

Looking at the undone homework on his desk always makes David Grey feel uncomfortable. More often than not, David leaves his homework behind and just surfs the Internet or watches TV, waiting until the last minute. “But the longer I wait,” says David, aged 15, “the more I worry.”
Everyone procrastinates because they want to feel good now. The way to do that is to avoid the task. You can procrastinate on nearly anything, even enjoyable tasks such as planing a vacation. “Some people procrastinate cleaning. Some people procrastinate by cleaning,” says Professor Peter Stone. Research has shown that the top tasks young people procrastinate are studying and going to bed. “One big cause for procrastination is that people are afraid of failure, of not meeting others’ expectations”, Stone adds.
Some people believe that procrastination will make them work more successfully. But researchers disagree “I did a study several years ago, asking procrastinators to finish a task in a certain period of time,” says Stone. “They did worse than non-procrastinators: they made more mistakes and they took longer. But they thought they did better.” No matter what the cause is, procrastination is usually not going to be good for you. For example, bedtime procrastination can lead to sleeplessness, which in turn can cause many other health problems.
For those who need some drives to stop procrastinating, the best advice might be to take action first. If you’ve been procrastinating on forming a habit of exercise, just put on your walking shoes. A little bit of progress will get you moving.
Next, find something to help you remember to take action. If you want to go to bed at 10:30 pm, you might set a timed dimmer switch (渐暗开关) at 10 pm. When the lights are dimmer, you’ll start going to bed. It works for most people.
Finally, reward yourself every time you make progress. For example, after you’ve run 3 km, enjoy your favorite ice cream. But be careful: it won’t work the other way around.
42.What can be the best title of this passage
A.A day of a procrastinator. B.Procrastination: yes or no
C.Say goodbye to procrastination. D.Want to feel good now Procrastinate!
43.What is the main reason for people’s procrastination
A.They want to avoid doing hard work. B.They fear to lose and let others down.
C.They need to finish the top tasks first. D.They plan to do the enjoyable tasks last.
44.What does the word “procrastinate” most probably mean
A.Stop doing something. B.Be afraid of doing something.
C.Leave things you should do till later. D.Do things as soon as possible.
45.What should David do if he wants to stop procrastinating on a writing task
A.Put on some soft music to help think actively.
