People who like travelling have their reasons. They believe that travelling can help them expand their field of view. especially in the geographical and historical sense. They also think that touring will give them more chances to enjoy different kinds of food and experience new things that would never be brought by other activities. But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons.
Travelling, in my opinion, does more good than harm. Most importantly, it broadens(使扩大)our mind. We can get in touch with other civilizations(文明), cultures, customs and ideas.
Through history, most people travelled because of necessity-not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for the fun of it. In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the way to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals. Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity(好奇心). They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon(地平线). Also business travel has been going on for centuries. Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures.
So, travelling does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us. There is no doubt that we can get much from it.

Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.
During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport.
He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in a strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organised again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.
Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can (垃圾桶) that had been left out on the footpath.
My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend.
That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way.

The year of the pig is over and we have rats this year. Many people hate rats. They think rats are dirty and carry diseases, but they are actually very useful in medical research and can be very good pets.
Rats are very smart and are known for their problem-solving skills. “Many people believe they are nasty but that’s not true at all. In fact, rats wash themselves several times a day, about as often as cats,” says a rat fan. Rat teeth are very strong and can chew through walls. Rats like to chew and are always looking for food. They like to live where people live for two reasons —food and a good home. They can live one to three years.
Rats are expert swimmers. They can laugh and do so with a loud sound when they are happy. Rats can be easily trained and many can play games. They can also understand things quickly. If you put them in a maze (迷宫), they can soon find their way out.
It has been clear that rats are useful in medical research. In research labs around the world, rats have helped cure more illnesses than any other animal. So they have saved millions of lives.
They have also been imitated (模仿) in Hollywood. You know Disney’s Mickey Mouse has been loved for over 80 years.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams(交通堵塞), the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce(凶猛的) tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience(耐心) to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere(气氛) of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream(车流) without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone(更不用说) master the roadmanship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
71. The passage mainly talks about ________.
A. traffic jams B. road politeness
C. good manners D. modern drivers
72. Troubles on the road are often caused by ________.
A. the behavior of the drivers B. traffic jams
C. great speed D. terrible road conditions
73. According to the writer, a good driver should ________.
A. be able to recognize politeness when he sees it
B. beat back when forced to face rude driving
C. encourage old ladies to cross the roads whenever they want to
D. join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel
74. The following statements are true EXCEPT ________.
A. some modern drivers are not good at driving
B. road politeness is good sense as well as good manners
C. a friendly driver should nod or wave thanks in answer to an act of politeness
D. it is also right to have a tiger in the driver’s seat
75. It is not always right for drivers to ________.
A. master roadmanship
B. recognize politeness when they see it
C. give a friendly nod in answer to an act of politeness
D. encourage old ladies to cross the road whenever and wherever they want

Dear Mr. Brown,
I’m Li Hua, a new comer to the school from China. Recently I ran into some difficulties, so I’m writing to ask you for help.
I find it difficult to keep up with the study pace here, sometimes having trouble following the teacher in class. Besides, how to get along well with my roommates bothers me a lot, as we come from different cultures and may see things differently. These really have been a headache for me. I wonder if it’s possible for you to have a face-to-face meeting with me to sort things out.
Your timely reply would be highly appreciated.
Yours,
Li Hua
