Being compared to geniuses like Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein is not something that happens to the average person. So when we tell you that Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski is far from your average human, we mean it.
At the age of just 23, Pasterski has already achieved more than most of us ever will in our lifetime. When she was only 14 years old, the Chicago native made her own single engine airplane by herself. If that wasn't impressive enough, she then flew it across Lake Michigan, becoming the youngest person to ever fly their own plane.
The whole adventurous activity took two years to complete, and she showed the entire experience on social media. She then graduated from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and studied at the well-known Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT). After just three years at MIT she achieved the highest possible grade point average of 5.0. She is now working towards her doctorate at world-famous Harvard University.
Once again she is only 23 years old. What's even more remarkable(非凡的) is that she is no longer interested in building planes, but has turned her attention to physics—namely black holes and how gravity affects space and time—thus the Einstein and Hawking comparisons. She especially wants to study "quantum gravity", where she will try to understand the connection between gravity within the context of quantum physics.
If her research proves successful, discoveries in this area could greatly change the way we understand the universe. During an earlier interview she said, "Be optimistic(乐观的) about what you believe you can do. When you're little, you say a lot of things about what you'll do or be when you're older—I think it's important not to lose sight of those dreams."
4. How did Pasterski leave a great impression
A. She made a great discovery. B. She broke a record.
C. She invented an airplane. D. She won the competition.
5. What can we know about Pasterski from paragraph 3
A. She got high marks when studying at MIT.
B. She shared her study experience on social media.
C. She got her master's degree at Harvard University.
D. She often took adventurous activities during her college life.
6. What s Pasterski's interest now
A. Building planes. B. Exploring the space.
C. Researching planes. D. Studying physics.
7. What did Pasterski encourage people to be in her interview
A. Considerate and creative. B. Generous and outspoken.
C. Confident and determined. D. Energetic and curious.

A young Dutch inventor is widening his effort to clean up floating(浮动的) plastic from the Pacific Ocean. He has developed a floating device to trap plastic waste moving into rivers before it reaches the oceans.
Boyan Slat was just 18 years old when he invented a system for catching waste in the ocean. He also founded an environmental group called The Ocean Cleanup. Its purpose is to develop the system. In 2019, Slat showed the next step: a floating device called Interceptor. It removes plastic out of rivers. The device is powered by energy from the sun."The 1,000 rivers are responsible for about 80% of plastic going into the world's oceans," said Slat. Three of the machines have already been used. Each machine costs about $775,600, but the cost might drop as production increases.
Since they were used, the machines have been doing very well, collecting the plastic bottles and all the rubbish in the rivers. According to Slat, it is necessary to close "the tap", which means preventing more plastic from reaching the oceans in the first place. He wanted to clean them all in the next five years. "This is not going to be easy, but if we do get this done, we could truly make our oceans clean again," said Slat.
The device is designed to be safe in rivers. Its nose is shaped to change directions to keep it away from larger floating things. It works by guiding plastic waste into an opening in the front of the device. The waste is then carried inside the machine where it is dropped into containers. The device sends a text message to local operators that can come and empty it when it is full.
8. What can we know about Interceptor
A. It is being under test. B. It can help sort waste.
C. It needs solar power to work. D. It is mainly used in the oceans.
9. What does "the tap" refer to in paragraph 3
A. The rivers. B. The machines. C. The oceans. D. The waste.
10. What s the function of the device s nose
A. To empty the waste. B. To serve as containers.
C. To ensure the device s safety. D. To send operators text messages.
11. Where is the text most likely from
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A novel. D. A magazine.
D
Scientists say only enlarging the world's nature reserves to help protect plants and animals may be useless. The main reason is that levels of human activity are rising in and around the nature reserves. In fact, recognizing spaces as protected areas is not diminishing human activity there.
The researchers found that a lack of money to pay for land conservation(保护) is affecting conservation efforts. And it is a lack of communication between people who live in protected natural areas and outsiders. About 17 percent of the world is within protected areas, including the national parks, nature reserves and wilderness areas. Protected areas are important for supporting environments with many different kinds of plants and animals.
The researchers again found increasing human activity in most protected areas in every country. However, they said that human activity appeared to be more of a problem in nations with fewer roads and lower life standards on the Human Development Index(指数)(HDI).
Across the Northern Australia, protected areas often proved effective in slowing human activity when compared with unprotected areas. But in South America, Southeast Asia and African countries, pressure from human activity inside protected areas was higher.
Experts say governments need to provide fund support to help protected areas. Simply recognizing a place as a protected area can't be the beginning and the end of a conservation effort. Working with local people to take efforts is also important. If they're not partners in the protected areas, then wildlife conservation is much more difficult.
12. What does the underlined word "diminishing" in paragraph 1 mean
A. Reducing. B. Promoting. C. Preserving. D. Balancing.
13. What do the researchers find about the nature reserves
A. Protected areas have passed the unprotected areas.
B. Rising human activity in protected areas widely exists.
C. Protected areas are effective in developed countries.
D. Nations with lower HDI have more wilderness areas.
14. What do experts advise governments to do for protected areas
A. Enlarge protected areas.
B. Partner other nations.
C. Offer money and work with the locals.
D. Help the locals move to protected areas.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. People May Cause Harm to Wildlife
B. Nature Reserves Should Be Increased
C. Locals Should Improve the Natural Environment
D. Nature Reserves May Not Protect Wildlife Safely

38. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Growing coffee beans is a huge, money-making business. However, unluckily, full-sun production is replacing the industry and causes a lot of damage. The change in growing coffee from shade-grown production to full-sun production brings certain animals and birds in danger, and even breaks the world's ecological balance.
On a local level, the damage of the forest that is required by full-sun fields affects the area's birds and animals. The shade(树荫) of the forest trees gives a home to birds and other animals which depend on the trees' flowers and fruits. Full-sun coffee growers destroy this forest home. As a result, many animals are quickly in extinction.
On a more global level, the damage to the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also does harm to human life. Medical research often makes use of the forests' plants and animal life, and the ruin of such animals could keep researchers from finding ways for certain diseases. In addition, new coffee-growing methods are harmful to the water locally, and lastly the world's groundwater.
Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations(种植园) could mean breaking the balance of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade trees is already causing a little change in the world's climate, and studies show that the loss of oxygen-giving trees also leads to air pollution and global warming. Besides, the new growing methods are bringing about acidic soil conditions.
It is clear that the way much coffee is grown affects a lot, from the local environment to the global ecology. But coffee users do have a choice. They can buy shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coffee.
