Remember to eat your fruits and vegetables. They might just improve your memory.
Scientists have found out several kinds of products—including vegetables which have green leaves, orange and red vegetables and orange juice, are good for memory.
Researchers at Harvard University have found that men who insist on eating those fruits and vegetables over a period of 20 years were more likely to have better memory skills than those who seldom eat them. The study followed about 27,800 men in health care jobs over 20 years, and surveyed them on their diets and other health-related topics every four years.
Toward the end of the study, the researchers started asking them questions about their memory: For example, “Do you have more trouble than usual remembering a short list of things, such as a shopping list ”or “Do you have more trouble than usual following a group conversation or a story in a TV program due to your memory ” A growing number of “yes” answers to such questions can mean their memory is declining(衰退), the researchers said.
The participants were divided into five groups, based on how many servings(分量)of vegetables and fruits they got each day, from six servings in the healthiest group to just two servings. The six-serving eaters were 34 percent less likely to be forgetful. And the results were even better if the men happened to eat carotenoid-rich(富含胡萝卜素)vegetables, such as carrots and pumpkins. Besides, those who drank orange juice often were 47 percent less likely to become forgetful, compared with those who drank orange juice less than once a month.
“Our studies provide further evidence that diet choices can be important to keep your brain healthy,” researchers said.

How would you feel if your school banned(禁止) phones in class
In February, the Ministry of Education announced that mobile phones should, in principle(原则上), be banned in primary and secondary schools. This aims to protect students’ eyesight, make sure they focus on their work and prevent them from becoming addicted(上瘾的) to the Internet and online games.
Xu Xiaohe, a 13-year-old from Zhejiang, supports the policy. “In fact, my school has never allowed us to bring our mobile phones,” Xu said. “It’s a distraction from our work. Even adults can’t control themselves, let alone kids like us.”
Li Zihan from Beijing, however, feels differently. The 13-year-old believes that a mobile phone ban is too simplistic for a generation that has grown up with mobile phones. “Students should be taught self-management skills, as well as learn how to use their phones effectively to help with their studies,” Li said. “This might be the best way to deal with technology in modern times.”
For Ge Ziqi, the problem with banning phones has more to do with life outside of school. The 13-year-old Beijinger uses a bike-sharing app every day to travel between her home and school.
“Today, phones are used everywhere, from taking a bus to buying food,” she said. “If I can’t take my phone with me, I’ll have to buy my own bicycle.”
Some schools have come up with ideas to solve problems like Ge’s. At Shanghai Shatian School, for example, students are asked to put their phones in special lockers during school hours. The students call these lockers the “phone farm” (“养机场”) or “phone tarmac” (“停机坪”).

Eradajere Oleita often finds ways to give back on her birthday. As her 25th birthday was coming in 2022, she started looking for her next project. She found it when she watched a video on the Internet about how to iron foil-lined(铝箔内衬的)chip bags into sleeping bags. Oleita said the video gave her the idea of the Chip Bag Project.
“The project allows me to bring two of my thoughts together, people and the environment.” Oleita said. “We throw so many things away and never think about where that’s ending”.
“It takes about four hours to make a sleeping bag. Each takes about 150 to 300 chip bags,” Oleita told The Detroit News. “Our sleeping bags are better than the cotton ones. They are waterproof(防水的) and light. They are easy to carry as well.”
Since 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected over 800,000 chip bags and created 110 sleeping bags.
“Whenever we get a chip bag, we’re preventing something going into our water,” Oleita said. “And when we give somebody a bag, we’re giving warmth, and we’re helping a human life.”
The Chip Bag Project is just the latest environmental project for Oleita. She has also worked with the Youth Energy Squad. One of her first large projects was creating a 6-foot-tall Minion(小黄人)out of recycled plastic bottles.
“Before, I thought environmental things had nothing to do with people like me,” Oleita said. “But now I believe that each of us can do something to the future of the world by training people not to be careless with their things, and at the same time we can help people in need.”

Robots on the farm
What can drones do Their many uses include taking pictures from the sky, observing(观察) wild animals and delivering packages. Now these small flying robots are leading a new farming revolution(革命), according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
When equipped(装备) with cameras and other data-gathering devices, drones provide us with an eye in the sky. Here are a few of the farming-related jobs drones can do.
Looking for sick crops
Drones can scan(扫描) crops using different kinds of light. Then, they produce multispectral images(多谱图像) that can help us find sickly yellow plants within fields of green. Drones can also detect bacteria(检测细菌) that are harmful to crops in the air from a few kilometers away. Farmers can check the drones’ air samples(样本) and try to find ways to protect their crops before the bacteria get to them.
Counting cattle
When flying over cattle, drones can track the livestock and find out where fences need fixing. People can also equip drones with thermal imagers(热像仪) and night-vision cameras. This can help farmers look for animals that could harm their cattle.
Water watch
Most fields aren’t perfectly flat(平坦的). After watering, some places may dry out faster than others. Other spots might not get water at all. Drones can scan the field and make a 3-D map. Using the map, farmers can figure out which parts of a field are dry or need improvement.
Spraying pesticide(喷洒农药)
Different parts of a field might be uneven(不平坦) or have different altitudes(高度). Drones can check for this when flying above the land. Then, they change their height and therefore spray the correct amount of pesticide over each part of the field. This is more efficient than traditional pesticide spraying. Drones can finish spraying a field up to five times faster than with traditional machinery, according to a study from MIT.

A few years ago, a friend gave me a restaurant gift card, and I picked a sunny Sunday afternoon to use it. It felt good taking my family to a nice restaurant. The meal was delicious, and we all had a good time together. The gift card covered almost all of the check(账单). I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. 1 saw two bills(钞票) inside. The first would cover the rest of the check. The second would cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip. I reached down to pick the first one.
At that moment, my mind flashed back to 30 years ago. I was working as a busboy (餐厅勤杂工) in a restaurant much like the one we were in. It was long hours of hard work for low pay. I remembered seeing the waitresses worrying about how they were going to pay the rent. I remembered the pain in their eyes and the sadness in their faces at the end of the day.
I blinked (眨眼睛) and was back in the present again, with my fingers touching the smaller bill in my wallet. I smiled, pushed it back down and picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hardworking waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and a happy heart.
We are all one family in this world. Do your best to be kind. Do your best to be a good person and replace suffering with joy.

China has many special forms of traditional art. They are usually used to represent things that are important in life such as love, beauty and family.
It was said that sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Liang. He sent them out to ask for help when in trouble. They are made of bamboo and covered with paper. Sky lanterns are used at festivals and other celebrations today. They are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.
Chinese paper-cutting has been around for more than 1,500 years. It may sound very easy but is difficult to practise. The paper, usually red, is folded (折叠) before it is cut with scissors. The most common pictures are flowers, animals and things about Chinese history. During the Spring Festival, they are put up on windows, doors and walls as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year.
Chinese clay (泥塑) art is famous because the clay pieces are so small but they look very real. The pieces are carefully shaped by hand from a very special kind of clay and then allowed to air-dry. After drying, they are fired at a very high heat. Then they are painted after polishing (抛光). Finally, materials such as wood or paper are added as decorations (装饰). It takes several weeks to complete everything. These small pieces of clay art show the love that all Chinese people have for life and beauty.

Restaurant cooks, home cooks and foodies (食客) — people who love good food-often say that we eat with all of our senses.
First, we use our sense of sight (视觉) to enjoy how a meal is presented, either on a dinner plate or a dining table. Our sense of touch can also be important when we prepare food. Next, with our sense of smell, we breathe in the aromas (香味) rising up from the meal. Finally, we enjoy and savour (细细品尝) the food with our sense of taste.
But what about our sense of hearing Does sound also influence our dining experience
A new report answers, “Yes.” The answer comes from researchers at Brigham Young University and Colorado State University in the US. They find that hearing is important in the eating experience.
Hearing is often called “the forgotten food sense”, says Ryan Elder. Elder is an assistant professor of marketing at Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management. He says that if people notice the sound the food makes as they eat it, they might eat less.
However, watching loud television or listening to loud music while eating can hide such noises. And this could cause eating more.
During the experiments (实验), the test subjects (实验对象) wore headphones and listened to noise at either a high or low level. Then the researchers gave them a crunchy (松脆的) snack: pretzels. The study found that subjects who listened to the higher noise ate more pretzels than those with the low levels.
Elder says that when hiding the sounds of eating, like when you watch television or listen to loud music while eating, we take away the sense of hearing. And this may cause you to eat more than you would usually.

Helicopters(直升飞机) are machines that fly. They are not like airplanes, though. Airplanes can go up in the air. They can land back on the ground. When in the air, airplanes can go forward. They can turn to the right or left. But they can’t go backward. Airplanes must move forward to be able to fly. They can fly forward very fast! If you’ re taking a long trip and want to get there quickly, airplanes are the best choice.
Helicopters can fly forward. They can also fly backward. They can even spin(旋转) in a circle! They can hover(盘旋) in one place, too. Airplanes can’t do that!
Helicopters don’t need a runway to take off and land. They simply go up and down! Unlike airplanes, helicopters don’t need large wings from the sides. They are much smaller, so they can land in small places.
Helicopters can do many jobs that airplanes can’t. They are used to lift heavy things or fight fires.
Helicopters can carry buckets of water. The pilot flies over a forest fire. He presses a button to dump the water onto the fire. Then he can fly over a lake or river. The helicopter can hover there and get more water. Then the pilot flies back over the fire to dump more water. Helicopters can also take firefighters to the fire. When they hover, the men can climb down a rope to get to the fire.
Helicopters can save people’s lives. They can rescue people trapped in a flood. They can be used as flying ambulances(救护车). Medical helicopters can land in a small place or on the roof of a tall building. They can fly the patient to the hospital quickly.

Oct. 16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It’s used to remind people not to waste food and fight hunger.
A big number of people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat. Food shortage(匮乏) is a big problem worldwide. Right now, there are more than 1,000 million hungry people in the world according to the UN. Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of hunger each year.
There are several reasons why there are food shortages. First, there have been more droughts(干旱) and floods recently. Also, a growing population makes feeding everyone more difficult.
Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. Sometimes we cook too much, or we don’t use it before it goes bad. The average(平均的) person throws away 50kg of food every year. According to the UN, more than one third of all food produced worldwide goes to waste each year.
That is over 1,300,000 million kilograms of food being wasted. The amount of food wasted in Europe can feed 200 million people, and the food wasted in Latin America can feed 300 million a year.
So think twice next time you want to throw away food. By cutting down on food waste,we could help put food on the empty plates of some hungry children. Only order as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can’t eat all you order, take the rest home. Don’t be too picky about food so that you don’t leave any on your plate. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much. Don’t cook too much.
When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food itself. Resources(资源) are also wasted while growing, transporting and cooking the food. These things all take energy, time and water.

● Slow down
Whatever you do, you do not need to be in a hurry. Doing so will only take you faster in the wrong direction. Slow down so that you can clearly hear the voice of your heart.
● Don’t think too much about yourself and do something for other people
We usually think about our own needs and problems most of the time. But self-centered(以自我为中心的)thoughts can’t bring peace into our mind. Instead, it may make us feel stressed. So don’t think too much about yourself.

Instead of studying at home or in a library, more and more people in China choose to go to paid study rooms with comfortable tables and chairs, air purifiers(净化器), and quiet computer keyboards. To create a friendly learning environment, some rooms have low light to help people focus on(关注) their work, while some others are sunrooms where learners can enjoy beautiful views from large windows. The workers there will tell people to keep quiet in the study areas.
“We hope to create a perfect learning place for people who want to study,” said Wang Yi, founder(创始人)of a 24—hour paid study room. “Over the past six months since we opened, the market demand(需求)is beyond expectation(预料). So we are now looking for new places.”
Feng Jia goes to the paid study room every day to prepare for an exam. “There are not enough seats in public libraries. There are also a lot of distractions(分散注意力), like people talking or walking around,” he said. “At home, there are even more distractions, such as phones, snacks and pets.”
The services of paid study rooms are not the same as those of public libraries. People believe that public libraries and paid study rooms are meeting the needs of different users. Readers go to public libraries for rich book resources, while they go to paid study rooms for learning environment.

Chinese is a beautiful but complex (复杂的) language, with tens of thousands of characters. When you come across a Chinese character that you don’t know, what do you do You might look it up in a dictionary and find its pinyin. Pinyin, a system that uses the Latin alphabet (拉丁字母), tells us how to read Chinese characters.
In 1958, Chinese linguist (语言学家) Zhou Youguang and his team designed pinyin. They created the system to help illiterate (不识字的) Chinese people learn how to read. This idea worked out quite well. The illiteracy rate (比率) in China dropped from 80 percent in the 1950s to 52 percent in 1964. In 2018, it’s only 4.08 percent, Guangming Daily reported.
Pinyin has been useful in other ways, too. It helps to promote (推广) the use of Mandarin (普通话), so that people who speak different dialects (方言) can still understand each other.
Pinyin is also finding its place in other languages. The Oxford English Dictionary now includes more than 100 pinyin entries (词条), such as jiaozi for “dumplings” and zhongguomeng for “Chinese dream”.
Foreign media sometimes use pinyinin reports about China. As Guangming Daily noted, pinyin is both a language tool and a cultural bridge that connects China to the world.
66.Chinese has tens of thousands of ________. If we don’t know a Chinese character, we can ________ in a dictionary.
