Some parents may have had trouble getting their kids away from electronics and outside this summer. But for one Virginia family, this wasn’t the case. Josh and Cassie Sutton completed a full-length hike with their son Hike Harvey.
The family spent 209 days walking thousands of miles to finish the whole Appalachian Trail, which is simply called the AT. Harvey was just 4 years old when they started, and celebrated his 5th birthday during the long travel.
To build up Harvey’s body and develop his personal qualities*, Josh and Cassie Sutton have been hiking with him since he was two. They prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes.
The AT is a 2,180-mile hiking trail that runs through the forests of the Appalachian Mountains. The amount* of up and down on the trail is about the same as climbing up and down Mount Qomolangma (the world’s highest mountain) 16 times. Only one out of every four hikers completes the trail.
But that didn’t stop Harvey and his family. During his days on the trail, Harvey played games with his parents. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun. They also made friends with other hikers. Harvey enjoyed the hard work of hiking. “My favourite part was rock climbing. It was really hard but fun” he said.
Hiking the Appalachian Trail taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to go through difficulties together. Because of the experience, they are closer than ever before. Harvey said, “I want to hike it again in the future.”

It was about ten at night. The cop stopped at doors as he moved along the street, trying each door to be sure that it was closed for the night.
Near the door of a darkened shop a man was standing. As the cop walked toward him, the man spoke quickly, “It’s all right, officer. I’m waiting for a friend. Twenty years ago there was a restaurant where this shop stands. Big Joe Brady’s Restaurant.”
“It was here until five years ago,” said the cop.
“Twenty years ago tonight the man near the door said, “I had dinner here with Jimmy Wells, my best friend. He and I grew up together here in New York. The next morning I was to start for the West to make my fortune*. You couldn’t have pulled Jimmy out of New York. He thought it was the only place on earth. We agreed that night we would meet here again exactly twenty years from that date and time. We thought that in twenty years we would know what kind of men we were, and what future waited for us.”
“It sounds interesting,” said the cop.
The man waiting took out a fine watch, covered with small jewels*. “Three minutes before ten,” he said. “It was ten that night when we said goodbye here.”
“You were successful in the West, weren’t you asked the cop.
“I surely was! I hope Jimmy has done half as well.”
The cop took a step or two. “I’ll go on my way,” he said. “I hope your friend comes all right. Good night!”
About twenty minutes later, a tall man came hurrying across the street. He went directly to the waiting man. “Is that you, Bob ” he asked.
“Is that you, Jimmy Wells ” cried the man at the door. “You’ve changed. I never thought you were so tall.”
“Come on, Bob! We’ll find a place and have a good long talk about the old times.”
At the corner stood a shop bright with electric lights. When the two men came near, each turned to look at the other’s face.
____▲____. “You’re not Jimmy Wells,” he said. “Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change a man’s nose.”
“It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one,” said the tall man. You’ve been under arrest* for ten minutes, Bob. Now, before we go on to the station here’s a note I was asked to hand you.”
Bob unfolded it. His hand began to shake a little as he read.
Bob: I was at the place on time. I saw the face of the man wanted by Chicago cops. I didn’t want to arrest you myself. So I went around and got another cop to do the job.
