The Olympic Games have a long history. They began in Greece and lasted for over a thousand years, until 394 AD.The ancient Olympic Games were very different from the Olympics we have today. In ancient time, only the Greeks took part in the Olympics, and women were not allowed to join or watch them.

It was a hot summer day and I had just pulled into the gas station to fill up my car. After filling it up, I started to walk inside to pay. That is when I noticed them. Two elderly women were standing back from their car. There was shock and fear on their faces. I looked and saw what they saw: five yellow jackets(小黄蜂)building a nest around their gas gap. I suddenly felt scared. I shared the ladies’ fear.
Yellow jackets have never been friends of mine. Several times these wasps(黄蜂)have attacked me while I was cutting the grass, stinging(蛰)me each time I ran over their nests. The worst time, however, was when I was a young boy. A friend of mine and I were playing in my backyard. I must have stepped on one of their nests again because before I knew it, both of us were being chased and stung by the yellow jackets while we ran away screaming. I ran to my mom with tears in my eyes. She ran a cold bath and put us both in it to ease(减轻)the pain before giving us medicine to help us feel better.
Still, I knew I couldn’t let fear stop me now. I reached into my pocket for a paper towel I had there. I tore out the nest with the paper towel and stepped on it while the wasps were buzzing around me. Both of the ladies thanked me for what I did.
You can’t let the fear of being stung-either physically or emotionally-keep you from doing what is right. We need to love each other and change the world for the better. And the only way you can do this is through helpful acts and kindness. Don’t let the fear in your life hold you back.

Can you imagine a world without chocolate According to chocolate makers it could happen if we don’t act soon.
There are two main causes of the chocolate shortage (短缺)—chocolate’s growing popularity and less production of cocoa, the plant from which chocolate is made. With more and more people in India and China loving chocolate these years, not much can be done about the first cause.
Therefore, the only thing we can do is to increase cocoa production. However, new plant diseases and little rain have reduced cocoa production by 40 percent in the past 10 years. What’s worse, many cocoa farmers in Africa and other cocoa-producing countries are changing to other crops such as corn or rubber. This way, the farmers can make more money.
“To prevent more farmers from changing, we are trying to create new cocoa plants that can grow faster and stronger.”said the researchers at the International Cocoa Control Centre. But first they must make sure the new plants are safe to grow. This takes a long time.
First, each new plant is stored at the Control Centre for six months to make sure it is healthy. It is then planted in the Centre’s fields, studied and tested for another two years. Only after scientists are certain that they’re disease—free will the plants be sent to farmers in West Africa or wherever else they are needed.
To create new stronger types of cocoa, scientists at the Centre are combining the best parts from different cocoa plants. Though the world is facing a serious chocolate shortage, there is now hope!

Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not munication is a problem for both parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some tips for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟) .
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorbike. They argued over it. But they finally came to a promise. Michael bought the motorbike, but only drove it on certain days. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect to them. Showing respect can keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

Mark Twain(马克 吐温)is good at writing quotations(语录).
There are hundreds of his quotations in books, on posters and on quotation websites. Here is an example:
“If you tell the truth, you don’ t have to remember anything. ” — Mark Twain
It reminds us that telling a lie is much more difficult than telling the truth. Telling a lie means you have to remember what you said each time you tell the lie. If you tell the truth, there is nothing to remember. He suggests that you shouldn’ t lie not because it is wrong, but because it is hard work. Here is another example:
“Always obey your parents when they are present. ” — Mark Twain
The humorous part is when they are present. The quotation tells you to obey your parents when they are there with you — because they can see what you are doing.
Albert Einstein’ s(阿尔伯特 爱因斯坦)quotations are also popular. Many of his quotations are encouraging. This means that they help us to do our best and be the best person we can be. Here is an example:
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning. ” — Albert Einstein
It gives us a lot to think about. This quotation tells us that we can learn from mistakes we made before. It also reminds us to always look closely at everything we do and keep asking the right questions to help us achieve our best.

Thailand durian (榴莲), Chile prunes (西梅) and Boston lobsters (龙虾) used to be strangers to Chinese people. But thanks to the World Trade Organization (WTO), those foods are now common on the dining tables of Chinese families.
This year is the 21st anniversary of China’s entry into the WTO. On Dec 11, 2001, China formally became the WTO’s 143rd member. The WTO is a global trade organization, which deals with rules of trade between nations. In the WTO, agreements are made on trade between countries. The goal is to help countries do business effectively and fairly.
Joining the WTO meant China needed to follow global trade rules while opening up its market to the world, said Long Yongtu, China’s former chief negotiator (首席谈判代表) for WTO entry.
For example, the WTO calls for cutting or even removing tariffs (关税) between countries. A tariff is a tax placed on impoted or exported goods as they go from one country to another. In addition, WTO entry means Chinese companies directly face global competition.
After joining the WTO, China has worked hard to be in line with global trade rules in all areas. To open its market, China’s tariff level was dropped to 7.4 percent from 15.3 percent in 2001. China has also revised (修改) more than 2,300 laws and rules, covering trade and investment (投资).
At the same time, China has become a major trade partner of more than 120 countries. It has contributed nearly 30 percent to the growth of the world’s economy every year.
“China’s entry into the WTO has created a win-win result for China and the world,” said Yi Xiaozhun, WTO’s former deputy director-general.

34.Why did Chinese government drop its tariff level from 15.3 percent to 7.4 percent in 2001 _____

The Awakening Age (《觉醒年代》) is the most meaningful and interesting TV drama that I have ever seen. It was shown first on CCTV 1 on February 1, 2021. It shows history from the New Culture Movement (新文化运动) to the founding (成立) of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
I like it because I can feel the power of youth from the drama. In order to wake people up to the problems, many students gave speeches in the streets. They tried their best to fight for a better world. Also, they spread ideas of democracy (民主) and science no matter what troubles they would get into.
Among all the characters, I admire Chen Yannian the most. He has made great contributions to the growth of the CPC.Although his life was short—he only lived to the age of 29— his spirit will always live in people’s hearts. The show encourages me to face difficulties in a brave and positive (积极的) way.

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous landmarks(地标) in Australia. This summer holiday, I got the chance to visit it and find out what makes this building so great.
As our guide told us, the Sydney Opera House was built with a kind of self-cleaning material that is very rare even today.
First, we visited the Drama Hall. We learned about the designer of the Sydney Opera House—Danish architect(建筑师) Jorn Utzon. He was the winner of an international design competition. However, he designed the building according to his own tastes, which caused several problems. The project was completed 10 years late. The cost of construction(建造) was over budget(预算). Utzon didn’t get to see it after it was built.
Then, we visited Joan Sutherland Theatre. The theater was refurbished(翻新) in 2017 with new high-tech equipment. There was a rehearsal(排练) that day, so we could hear the beautiful sound of the orchestra(管弦乐队). Finally, we arrived at the largest theater—Concert Hall. It has hosted many kinds of performances, from classical to rock music. A few years ago, a sports event was even held there.
Before we finished the tour, the guide told us the rest of Utzon’s story. In 1966, Utzon had an argument with the government and refused to give in. He had to leave the country. It was a hard time in his life. But many years later, people understood him and saw the building as a masterpiece(杰作).
From this tour, I learned that the opera house is not only a famous building, but a carrier(载体) of history and culture.

Eradajere Oleita often finds ways to give back on her birthday. As her 25th birthday was coming in 2022, she started looking for her next project. She found it when she watched a video on the Internet about how to iron foil-lined(铝箔内衬的)chip bags into sleeping bags. Oleita said the video gave her the idea of the Chip Bag Project.
“The project allows me to bring two of my thoughts together, people and the environment.” Oleita said. “We throw so many things away and never think about where that’s ending”.
“It takes about four hours to make a sleeping bag. Each takes about 150 to 300 chip bags,” Oleita told The Detroit News. “Our sleeping bags are better than the cotton ones. They are waterproof(防水的) and light. They are easy to carry as well.”
Since 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected over 800,000 chip bags and created 110 sleeping bags.
“Whenever we get a chip bag, we’re preventing something going into our water,” Oleita said. “And when we give somebody a bag, we’re giving warmth, and we’re helping a human life.”
The Chip Bag Project is just the latest environmental project for Oleita. She has also worked with the Youth Energy Squad. One of her first large projects was creating a 6-foot-tall Minion(小黄人)out of recycled plastic bottles.
