Argentina in the late nineteenth century was an exciting place. Around 1870, it was experiencing an economic boom(经济繁荣), and the capital Buenos Aires, attracted many people. Farmers, as well as many foreigners from Spain and ltaly, came to Buenos Aires looking for jobs. These jobs didn’t pay well, and the people felt lonely with their new life in the city. As the unhappy newcomers mixed together in the poor parts of the ciry, the dance known as the tango came into being.
At the beginning, the tango was a dance of the lower classes(阶级). It was danced in the bars and streets. At that time women were fewer than men, so if a man didn’t want to be left out, his only choice was to dance with another man so that he could attract the attention of the women. “Of course you must play Elaine, Anne,” said Diana.
“I’m not doing it” said Ruby Gillis. “To lie down in the boat and pretend I was dead—Oh, I just couldn’t.”
“I couldn’t keep still,” said Jane Andrews.
As girls of thirteen going on fourteen, the pond was their new favorite place to play. It was Anne’s idea that they act out “Elaine”, the Lily Girl.
They had studied Tennyson’s poem, in school over winter. Anne’s plan was to set a boat off carrying the “dead” Elaine and let it float under the bridge to the other side of the pond , where it would be caught by the others.
“Well, I’ll be Elaine.” said Anne, “Ruby, you must be King Arthur, Jane will be Guinevere, and Diana must be Lancelot.”
Anne lay in the boat and held a flower to her chest.
“Oh, she does look really dead,” whispered Ruby Gillis nervously, watching the still, white little face. Mrs. Lynde says that acting is very bad.
“Ruby, you shouldn’t talk about Mrs. Lynde,” said Anne, “because this is hundreds of years before Mrs. Lynde was born.”
The boat began to float away. At first, Anne enjoyed the romance of being the Lily Girl. Then, something not at all romantic happened. The boat began to break. It looked like it would fill and sink, and Anne could not swim! Just then, the boat hit an old wooden pile. Anne jumped out of the boat and grabbed it. She held on and waited for the girls to find her. The boat went under the bridge and then sank. Ruby, Jane, and Diana watched it sink and were sure that Anne had gone down with it. They screamed and screamed and ran off to find help. Poor Anne was still hanging on to the wooden pile. The minutes passed by, each seeming like an hour to the unfortunate Lily Girl.

I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchairs(轮椅). Some people, old and weak, cannot get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person.
Then I fainted(昏倒)at Euro Disney because of low blood pressure. This was the first time I had ever fainted, and my parents said that I must rest for a while after First Aid. I agreed to take it easy but as I stepped towards the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction! Feeling the color burn my cheeks, I asked him to wheel that thing right back to where he found it. I could mot believe this was happening to me. Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me, as my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently.
Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheelchair suddenly. Bitterness set in as I was thrown back and forth. “Stupid kids—they have perfectly good legs. Why can’t they watch where they are going ” I thought. People stared down at me, with pity in their eyes. Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me, the better.
“I am just like you!” I wanted to scream. “The only difference is you’ve got legs, and I have wheels.”
People in whelchairs are not stupid. They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have been stuck indoors. Online classes and working from home mean a lot of sitting around on your butt.
We already know that if we don’t move much, we get fatter, we get heart problems and maybe we get diabetes (糖尿病). But new studies have shown that it could hurt our mental (心理的) health too.
A study of 1020 Brazilian adults during the pandemic found that about 30% of them sat around for more than 10 hours per day. It reported that people who sat for too long often showed more symptoms of depression (抑郁的症状).
Another study looked at children. It found that each extra hour of sitting time at ages 12, 14 and 16 led to higher depression scores by age 18. Eighteen-year-old people who sat most often had depression scores 28% higher than those who were more active.
Scientists are not sure yet about the link between too much sitting and depression. But according to Mats Hallgren from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, “Sitting for too long can slow blood flow in the body, including blood flow to the brain.” It might also affect the growth of neurons (神经细胞) in the brain. And couch potatoes might do other unhealthy things while sitting, such as snacking on junk food. All these may lead to depression.
The good news It’s easy to overcome (克服). Aaron Kandola from University College London, UK, said “all types” of movement might help, even light activity.
“It is great to exercise and play sports,” said Kandola. “But anything you can do to avoid sitting for too long will help with mood, stress and thinking clearly.” The key message is just to move more, more often.

Now schools in England are preparing to welcome back pupils after nearly six months out of the classroom.
The education secretary Gavin Williamson insisted that students were returning to a safe environment, and said the reopening of schools was a massive milestone. Teachers have been returning today with most children due back from tomorrow to the end of the week, as our education reporter Branwen Jefferys tells us: Kirsty’s getting ready for the new term to welcome her class back to lessons and sending her own son back to his school.
“As a teacher, as a parent, I’m really happy for my son to return. He’s really excited to see his friends and just getting stuck back in with the leaning. ”
From moming drop off onwards, it’s all changing. You can see signs, warning parents they can’t come beyond the gates.
For their head, an extra cost to making the school safe. “Things like sanitizer, soap, paper towels, tissues. We have to have an awful lot of that if you think that we’re going to have 400 plus children washing their hands at least six times a day. ”
Ava is getting ready to start secondary school. Her mum is a bit worried but trying to stay positive: “She’s not actually worried about starting school. She’s worried about the COVID preparations and if she’ll be behind in her work at all, and not the actual start of school. ”
So what happens if a case is confirmed(确定)
Schools will have to ask close contacts(接触) of the person who’s tested positive(阳性) toself-isolate(自我隔离). Close contact means face-to-face contact within a meter of the infected(感染的) person for more than 15 minutes, or direct skin-to-skin contact, proximity contact, that’s spending more than 15 minutes under two meters from the infected person and traveling in a small vehicle like a car with an infected person.

The total number of people vaccinated(接种疫苗)had reached 1, 095 billion by Sept 6, covering 77. 6 percent of China’s total population. When the needle touches the skin of your upper arm, have you ever thought about why it has to be there Why not other body parts like your legs
Vaccines are injected into muscle(肌肉). Muscle tissue contains important immune cells(免疫细胞). These immune cells recognize the antigen(抗原), a tiny piece of virus or bacteria(细菌)introduced by the vaccine that stimulates(刺激)an immune response. In the case of the COVID-19 vaccine the immune cells in the muscle tissue pick up these antigens and present them to the lymph nodes(淋巴结). As key parts of our immune system, lymph nodes contain more immune cells that recognize the antigens in vaccines and start the immune process of creating antibodies(抗体). Since the deltoid(三角肌)is close to lymph nodes located under the arm, it is the perfect choice for many vaccines.
Muscles can save you from getting a red rash and swelling up. Muscle helps find any adverse reactions(不良反应)and minimize them, so it’s safer. If certain vaccines are injected into fat parts, the chance of inflammation reaction(炎症反应)increases. Fat parts have poor blood supply, which leads to poor absorption(吸收)of the vaccine.
Muscle size should also be considered. Usually adults and children aged 3 and older had better receive vaccines in their deltoid, while recommend younger children to receive their vaccines in their mid-thigh because their arm muscles are smaller and less developed. Rolling up your sleeve is the easier and preferred way to go.

From red apples and yellow lemons to blueberries and green melons, fruit comes in many different colors. Why do different kinds of fruits have so many colors
According to Chinese Academy of Sciences, fruit colors actually come from their different pigments (色素), such as red or yellow carotenoid (类胡萝卜素) and blue or purple anthocyanin (花青素). These pigments appear in different amounts, depending on the fruit’s environment. This causes the fruit to turn a certain color.
To find out how the environment affects fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black.
They found that red fruit tends to grow in cooler places. And instead of just growing in one place, you can find them growing in many places around the world. Blue and purple fruit mostly grows in warm places. These fruit tends to grow a lot in just one special area. The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator (赤道) , the darker its color will be.
Animals have also had an impact on the evolution (进化) of fruit colors. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds in other places later. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places. Therefore, in order to attract animals, some fruits develop colors that are easy for animals to see.
However, animals see colors in a different way. Fruit needs to develop colors that are suited to animals’ visual abilities. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. Therefore, there tends to be more red fruit in areas where birds live. The lemurs (狐猴) of Madagascar are red-green color-blind. Many yellow fruits can be found in their habitats (栖息地), as they can easily see this color.
44.You are more likely to find blue and purple fruit in ________ places.

“They have started to fight!” I cried. Ben Gunn and I ran towards the ship. As we ran we heard some pistol (手枪) shots. Then in front of me I saw a Union Jack (米字旗) flying in the air above the trees.
The flag was flying from a wooden fort (堡垒) that stood on a hill looking over the beach. Ben Gunn stopped. “Your friends are there,” he said.“Join them. When you want me, come to where you found e alone, and carry something white so that I will know it’s you.”
Just then there was aloud bang (巨响) . A cannon ball (炮弹) came flying through the air, and we both ran off in opposite directions. The shots continued for another hour. I moved quietly through the trees. The pirates’ flag, the Jolly Roger, was flying on the Hispaniola.
Down on the beach below the fort, the pirates were breaking up the rowing boat. Further down the beach there was a large fire. One of the pirates’ boats was coming and going between the beach and the ship. I also noticed some white rocks and l knew that was where Ben Gunn’s boat was. I then ran to the fort where l found my friends. We sat and told each other our stories.
The doctor told his story first,“Six of the original crew (原来的船员) were still on the ship. They were all together at the front of the ship. When we heard that you, Jim, were ashore with the mutineers (叛变者). Hunter and I decided to go ashore (在岸上) , too. We took another small boat and landed at a different part of the beach to the mutineers. Hunter stayed to guard the boat and I went into the woods. After about one hundred metres, I found this fort. As you can see, it has a strong fence (栅栏) and it is in a good position. There is a stream running through it and it even has a small wooden house in the middle with holes in the walls for guns to shoot through. It is a perfect place to defend ourselves against attackers (攻击者) .”

I had hidden the long black bag in the garage for the past two days. Tonight, in the dark, I would finally take it away. If everything went OK, it would be done by morning. But I had to be sure no one, not even my wife, saw me.
It was more difficult to get away from the party than I expected. I said that the children were tired and needed to get to bed. It was partly true. But the main reason for leaving was that I wanted to complete my plan.
First I had to get the kids to sleep. That was never easy at any time and tonight it was even more difficult. The eldest one wanted to know why we left the party early. I told him 10:30 pm was not early. As usual, I read them a bed time story, but I had to stop myself reading too quickly or they would learn my secret.
Silence finally came, and feeling like a thief in the night, I went out of the house and into the garage. Taking one end, I dragged (拖拽) the bag out from its hiding place and took it into the garden. I was worried that my neighbours might see me and call the police.
It was already eleven o’clock. By the light of the moon I started working, trying to make as little noise as possible. And that was not easy with a saw (锯子) and a hammer.
After much effort, my work was finally completed. I looked down at my watch. It was exactly 4:00 am. Then I went inside to have a shower and get a few hours of sleep. It wouldn’t be long now before the kids would rush into my room and wake me up to tell me about the new tree-house Father Christmas had brought them this year.

When Oliver arrived in this hard world, it was very doubtful whether he would live beyond the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and struggled (斗争) to start breathing (呼吸).
Oliver fought his first battle without much help from the two people present at his birth. One was an old woman, who was nearly always drunk, and the other was a busy local doctor, who was not paid enough to be very interested in Oliver’s survive.
However, Oliver managed to draw his first breath, and then announced (宣布) his arrival by crying loudly. His mother raised her pale young face and whispered, “Let me see it.”
The doctor turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands. He gave her the child. Lovingly, she kissed the baby with her cold white lips, then stared wildly around the room, fell back—and died.
The doctor began to put on his coat. “The mother was a good-looking girl. Where did she come from ”
“She was brought here last night,” replied the old woman. “She was found lying in the street. Where she came from, or what her name was, nobody knows.”
The doctor lifted the girl’s left hand. “The old story, ” he shook his head. “No wedding ring, I see. Ah! Good night.”
And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse. He was then sent to a special “baby farm” nearby. There, he and thirty other children rolled (翻滚) around the floor all day, without the inconvenience (不便) of too much food or too much clothing. Mrs. Mann, who “looked after” them, was very experienced. She knew what was good for children. She also knew what was good for herself. The board (董事会) responsible (负责的) for the orphans (孤儿) sometimes checked on the health of the children, but they always sent Mr. Bumble, a kind local policeman, to announce their visit the day before. So whenever the board arrived, of course, the children were always neat and clean.
On Oliver’s ninth birthday, Mr. Bumble came to see Mrs. Mann. Through the front window, Mrs. Mann saw him at the gate, and turned quickly to the girl who worked with her.
“Quick! Take Oliver and those others upstairs to be washed!” she said. Then she ran out to unlock the gate which was always kept locked.

There was magic in the secret garden that spring and summer. At first, everything turned green. Then the green changed to colours—blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere.
Dickon and Mary’s seeds(种子)grew and the roses—the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with their perfume.
Colin saw it all. He watched the changes as they happened. Dickon pushed his wheelchair to the garden every morning and he spent the day there. Sometimes Colin sat on the grass watching the insects. One day, he watched a mole(鼹鼠)digging a hole. He learnt a lot of things about the ways of these insects and animals. And Dickon taught him about the animals in the wood.
One morning, the children were in the secret garden as usual. When Ben Weatherstaff arrived, Colin said, “Good morning, Ben Weatherstaff. I want you and Dickon and Mary to listen to me because I’m going to tell you something very important.”
“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.
“I’m going to do a scientific experiment(科学实验),” he said. “When I grow up, I’m going to make scientific discoveries about magic and I’m going to start with this experiment. Do you understand ”
“Yes, sir!” said Ben Weatherstaff, but he didn’t really understand.
“I believe that there is magic in everything.” continued Colin. “Dickon knows some magic. He charms animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There’s magic in the garden, too. I’m going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. I’m going to say—Magic is in me! And you must all say it, too. That is my experiment. Are you going to help, Ben Weatherstaff ”
“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.
They sat down in a circle. The crow, the fox, the squirrels and the lamb were very curious.
“Now, let’s begin,” Colin said, and they all started chanting(吟唱).
“Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us.”
Then Colin stood up and walked round the garden. He went in front with Dickon on one side and Mary on the other. Ben Weatherstaff walked behind.
Colin walked a bit then rested. Then he walked again and rested again. At first, he held Dickon’s arm, then he walked a few steps alone.
“I can walk! The magic worked!” he cried.
“What is the doctor going to say ” asked Mary.
“Nothing.” Colin answered, “because we aren’t going to tell him. No one must know that I can walk and run. It’s a surprise for my father when he comes back to Misselthwaite.”
“He’s going to think it’s a dream,” said Mary.
