The wind was blowing dreadfully(恐怖地)。
The wind was blowing softly(柔和地)。
The wind was blowing comfortably(舒服地)。
Part 1
That night we set up our tent in a park.(那天晚上我们在公园里搭起帐篷。)
The moon was held up above the sky, shining her smooth and charming moonlight.
Twinkling stars were blinking(眨眼), and fragrant(芬芳的)breeze(微风) gently blew.(闪烁的星星眨着眼,芬芳的微风轻轻地吹着。)
blinking(眨眼)
fragrant(芬芳的)
breeze(微风)
Resting beside my mother, with hands held tightly by her, I feel the world is so beautiful.(躺在母亲身边,双手紧紧地握着母亲,我觉得这个世界是如此美丽。)
The wind was howling dreadfully and the rain was pouring from the heaven, whipping against the branches of lined(成排的) trees.
The world was loaded with a sea of darkness
howling(怒吼)
dreadfully(恐怖地
whipping(抽打)
lined(成排的)
I was seized with the roaring power of nature. A sense of horror creeping up on me.
Glories of the storm
The rhythm accelerates; plink follows plunk faster and faster until the sound is a roll of drums and the individual drops become an army marching over fields and rooftops. Now the first bolt of lightning stabs the earth. It is heaven’s exclamation point. The storm is here.
然后a roll of drums 采用了比喻的修辞,形容雨声之大,其次an army marching over fields and rooftops 也是使用了比喻的手法, 后面stab使用了拟人的修辞方法,指雨像剑一样劈下来。
Night fell. The darkness was thin, like some sleazy dress that has been worn and worn for many winters and always lets the cold through to the bones. Then the moon rose.
let.. through 让...
就起到了这个作用:“like some sleazy dress”
将darkness比作薄薄的裙子还不够,还穿了好几个冬天(has been worn and worn for many winters),冬天里穿裙子一定非常的寒冷。
A fire still fluttered in the grate (壁炉炉膛), ... like a bird trying to find its way out of the room.
这句话里,把壁炉里跳动的火苗比作想挣脱束缚的鸟(find its way out of the room)。
The wind was blowing. The mist was getting thick, like a huge textured velvet cloak, making what is hidden inside an unclear mystery.
Standing beside the empty road, they looked up into the sky, feeling the precious peace from within.
They stood there for a moment, side by side, waiting for the rushing holiday current and for their place in it. Then the daughter glanced over and momentarily regarded her mother. And slowly, almost reluctantly, she placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed affection around her mother’s shoulders and gently guided her back into the deluge.
His hard work paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Reuben rushed for the shop to buy the brooch. The moment he got the beautiful brooch, he burst through the front door and placed it in Dora’s hand. Never had Dora received such a gift. Speechless and happy, she held her son tightly into her arms, with tears welling up in her eyes.
The butterfly cleaned her tears on the face,“No.” God felt a bit relieved and said,“Tomorrow you can become human again.” Bu
The sky was a billion pure eyes of light and the grass green underfoot, it was as if night and day had become one beautiful moment. Dawn had come.
Dawn sent shimmering rays over the placid ocean, bestowing a golden path from the shore to the horizon.
The crystal and cerulean water was gentle as I waded through it, the sunset like orange paint on a blue canvas.
The lingering sunlight was obliterated by the rapidly falling night, resembling a pitch-black curtain draped over the sky.
The moon under siege by stars seemed to lighten the night bringing forth stars that shone and hung in the blackness. The never ending blackness consumed everything.
Looking up, I saw the sun shine brighter than I ever knew before. I saw a tree in the distance glisten gently as it reflected the sun's rays. My consciousness ebbed away with the heat. I took a few blinks before I landed with a thud.
Dotted with glittering stars, the sky, midnight blue, gave the scene a fairytale quality.
The rain drummed on the window, bidding farewell to the last beam of sunlight.
Kissed by the rain and glistening, the wet ground is cold under foot. A dense earthly sweet smell rises from the ground, enveloping everything within its soft embrace.
The leaves crunched beneath my feet as I strolled down the street. Occasionally, one would fall past me, lightly swaying as the air gently carried it to the ground.
Part 2
It was a woman, tall and large, with thick dark hair. She threw my veil over her head and looked in the mirror, and I saw-oh, the most horrible face! Discolored, almost purple, and savage! She had bloodshot eyes and swollen lips, and she glared into the mirror.
从全局到局部进行描写,先是身形,头发(tall and large, with thick dark hair),然后从脸部,眼睛、嘴唇(the most horrible face! Discolored, almost purple, and savage! bloodshot eyes and swollen lips)。
With two bloodshot eyes, the bear let out a deafening roar and violently struck the fence with his full strength.
With eyes swollen, the bear let out a deafening roar.
The animals rushed to the top of the farm and gazed round them in the clear morning light. Yes, it was theirs—everything that they could see was theirs! In the ecstasy of that thought they gambolled (/ ɡ mbl/ 雀跃)round and round, they hurled(用力投掷)themselves into the air in great leaps of excitement. They rolled in the dew, they cropped mouthfuls of the sweet summer grass, kicked up clods of the black earth, and snuffed its rich scent. Then they made a tour of inspection of the whole farm and surveyed with speechless admiration the plough land, the hay field, the orchard, the pool, the spinney. It was as though they had never seen these things before, and even now they could hardly believe that it was all their own.
主要通过一系列的动作描写突出动物们的喜悦之情,they gambolled / ɡ mbl/ 雀跃round and round;hurled(用力投掷)themselves into the air in great leaps of excitement等在后面描述中作者还写到了sweet summer grass, rich scent也侧面描写出了动物们当时愉悦的心情,生动形象地向读者展示了当时的画面场景。

Morty was checking out his library books when it caught his eye-a poster for Adventure Rocks Kids Camp. “Check this out!” Morty called to Ben and Fred as he grabbed three brochures and dashed to catch up with his best buddies. They all stopped, books in hands, to stare at the pictures of kids flying above canyons suspended from zip lines. They instantly believed the brochure’s headline: Summer won’t be complete until you Take it to the Limit at Adventure Rocks Kids Camp.
Ben broke the silence, “We have less than two weeks until registration opens, and it says the camp fills up fast.” Then an idea popped into Morty’s head. “Why don’t we sell lemonade and snacks by the side of the road We can pool our allowance savings for the camp.” “That’s a great Idea,” Ben said.
The sun had barely come up on Saturday morning when the kids set up their business. They chose a spot, asked permission from the homeowner, and then asked to use her garden hose for water to make lemonade.
Their business went smoothly until Ben announced that they had a comparatively small stock of lemons shortly after noon. Morty decided to make their stock go further. “Fred, when the jug gets down to one-fourth full, just fill it to the top with the water hose.” Morty was thinking out loud, “I’ll change the sign and charge 30 more cents for each cup of lemonade.” Their business went on and the three were secretly proud of the little tricks they had done.
Just as Morty finished refilling the jug with water for the third time, a vehicle rounded the comer. Morty saw the minivan with his father at the wheel and his family inside. They pulled up to the sidewalk, and his brothers and sisters jumped out, each clutching a coin or two. They were eager to support their brother’s bustling business. Morty’s family bought the last of the brownies and drank the last drop of watered-down lemonade.

When Aiden asked me to accompany him on a camping trip to the mountains, I envisioned a log cabin with a crackling fireplace, hot cocoa, and bunk beds. Imagine how my rustic, yet comfortable image of camping became a nightmare when Aiden and his older brother, Lebron, showed up with a truck filled with camping supplies-tents, rolled-up sleeping bags, and canteens! I did pack a backpack, as instructed, but I had no idea we were going on survival training!
Lebron, ever so efficient, had a schedule to keep, and he hurried me to get in so we could leave the city hustle and bustle behind us. Ahead, the mountains loomed bigger than I had remembered them; the trees were larger, and the environment was much more dangerous. At least the weather was amazing — cotton-candy clouds dotted the deep blue sky.
At the trailhead, Lebron strapped a sleeping bag onto my pack and lectured Aiden and me about hiking etiquette.
The first part of the trail looked more like a wooded road that led up the mountains than a hiking path. Soon, the path became narrower and steeper, forcing me to focus on the task at hand and to talk less. As we gained elevation, we moved above the tree line, and I could see the trail zigzagging up the mountain.
“It looks closer than it is,” Lebron said, reading my facial cues. “This is the most difficult part … watch the trail, not the view. Loose rocks and tree roots make the trail dangerous, and we have no shade.”
Finally, we reached the summit. My legs aching, I dropped my pack and groaned.
“No time to rest,” Lebron said, looking up at the sky. The weather had been warm all day, and it felt good to relax in the cool breeze. “The weather up here changes quickly, and that cool air means a storm is brewing. We need to set up camp.”

As I began to wade through thirteen pages of the credit-card company’s new policy, I wasn’t sure how it was going to affect me personally. As I waited to be connected to a customer service rep, I considered whether I should even write the fifth novel in my Old Cape House series. Did my readers really enjoy the mysterious historical stories I told Should I take on more debt to buy my paperback books I thought about all the author events, book signings, and book fairs that might be canceled because of the virus. When would normal life return
“Hello, Ms. Struna, this is Thomas. May I have your account information ”
After repeating the information he needed, I explained my dilemma in trying to understand the new policy and asked how it would affect my future purchases.
“Please, do not worry. You will have no change.”
“Are you sure I am an author and travel frequently. I need to have access to my card at all times for big or small purchases.” I laughed to myself, thinking I wasn’t going anywhere for a while, at least until there was a vaccine.
“Let me reassure you. There will be no change to your card, but Ms. Struna, may I ask you one more question Are you the author of The Old Cape House ”
My jaw dropped. He was talking about my first novel of suspenseful historical fiction, The Old Cape House, published in 2013. I was stunned and I stammered, “Why, yes I am.” I was still skeptical about what he wanted from me.
Thomas kept talking. “I thought it was you. I recognized your name, and when you told me you were an author, I knew it was you.”
“Oh, my goodness.” My heart started to beat faster with delight at the connection I was making with an unknown foreign reader.

Part 5
One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “ the polar bear capital of the world ” — the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears — like all wild animals — should be photographed from a safe distance. When I’m face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though — he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws (爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter (相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’t last through 30 more minutes of the bear’s punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn’t hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar (吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Morty’s father frowned at the sip of the lemonade. As to him, it tasted more like water. Overwhelmed with confusion, he asked directly, “What’s wrong It tastes just like cold water.” The moment Morty heard his father’s doubt, he stood awkwardly, not sure what to say. Fred and Ben were also speechless. A moment later, they admitted what they had done. Although Morty’s father was disappointed, he said, “You still have time to correct your wrongdoings.” Hearing this, they nodded immediately.
They decided to fix their wrongdoings the next week. Ben suggested to use the money earned to prepare enough lemons first and then reduce the price. They all agreed. When they restarted their business, they even stood a sign, saying, “We send a cup of lemonade to customers who bought it last Saturday afternoon for free.” They made over 50 cups of lemonade for a constant stream of customers with a low price and over 20 cups were for free. As you can imagine, they didn’t get enough money for the camp. But they learned a valuable lesson that one should always be honest.

I thought he was kidding, but Lebron was quite serious. He and Aiden worked expertly, while I stood around and pretended to help, thunder rumbling in the distance. We set up near a boulder outcropping, but the wind, thunder, and lightning were relentless. As the storm rolled in with a vengeance, we took cover inside. Lebron, sensing that I was scared, reached in his backpack for some crackers and peanut butter. Slowly, but methodically, he spread the peanut butter and told stories about his camping adventures. Each time lightning lit up the tent and the thunder echoed, I cringed. “This is just a typical summer storm — they’re short lived, but intense,” Lebron stated. “The campsite might get a bit muddy, but what’s the fun in camping if you can’t get dirty! At least the rain will keep the bears away,” he said with a smile.
Just as quickly as the storm came rushing in, it stopped, allowing us to exit the tent. The view was stunning — I could see for miles, and the rain left a fresh scent of pine and an earthy smell of soil. As darkness set in, l marveled at the multitude of stars in the night sky. I won’t lie — I was yearning for a hot shower and a soft bed, but as I gazed upward at the Milky Way, I knew this was an adventure I would never forget.

“Ms. Struna, your book changed me. It changed how I look at the world. It showed me ways to be more adventuresome and to be open to new things. Thank you so very much.”

I was stunned at the idea that I had made a difference in someone’s life. I murmured unbelievably and excitedly, “I had thought nobody would like this type of novel. I was about to give up when you gave me strength.” At this time, there were so many people standing in line that he had to be busy with his work. Therefore, he didn’t say too much, just giving me a determined look and telling me to call him as he handed me a note with a telephone number. Considering that maybe he was off duty, I called him. He was extremely grateful for my calling and said emotionally, “It was your Old Cape House series that inspired me and people around me with confidence to life. Hoping you can continue writing to bring hope and new things to your loyal fans.”
I hung up, ending this coincidental connection to a fan reader in a faraway place. I sank into thought: because of the outbreak of the epidemic, everyone's life was deeply affected and couldn't go out. Yes, he was right. It may be a good chance for me to bring a new world and something about adventure to their life. What a kind man! His words were like the warm sunshine to sweep away dark clouds overhead and bring me hope and confidence. Now I think it is time to open my computer and continue writing.

Para 2:
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.

Para 1:
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. Then we realized that the spray had only angered him even more, for he seemed much fiercer this time and violently pushed the fence like mad. My heart raced wildly, not knowing what to do. At this critical moment, Elli grabbed several pieces of garlic bread and threw them over the fence. It worked! The bear stopped the attack and ran to the bread. But it wasn’t long before he ate up all the bread and came back again.
Para 2:
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. “Thank goodness we are saved!” Elli cried out. Once the helicopter landed, we got onto it in no time, excited and relieved. When we were safe on the helicopter up in the air, I was amazed to spot that the bear had finally torn down the fence and ran towards the food we left behind. I quickly took out the camera and photographed the rare scene — we were robbed by a polar bear!
