Being compared to geniuses like Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein is not something that happens to the average person. So when we tell you that Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski is far from your average human, we mean it.
At the age of just 23, Pasterski has already achieved more than most of us ever will in our lifetime. When she was only 14 years old, the Chicago native made her own single engine airplane by herself. If that wasn't impressive enough, she then flew it across Lake Michigan, becoming the youngest person to ever fly their own plane.
The whole adventurous activity took two years to complete, and she showed the entire experience on social media. She then graduated from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and studied at the well-known Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT). After just three years at MIT she achieved the highest possible grade point average of 5.0. She is now working towards her doctorate at world-famous Harvard University.
Once again she is only 23 years old. What's even more remarkable is that she is no longer interested in building planes, but has turned her attention to physics—namely black holes and how gravity affects space and time—thus the Einstein and Hawking comparisons. She especially wants to study "quantum gravity", where she will try to understand the connection between gravity within the context of quantum physics.
If her research proves successful, discoveries in this area could greatly change the way we understand the universe. During an earlier interview she said, "Be optimistic (乐观的) about what you believe you can do. When you're little, you say a lot of things about what you'll do or be when you're older—I think it's important not to lose sight of those dreams."
5. How did Pasterski leave a great impression?
A. She made a great discovery. B. She broke a record.
C. She invented an airplane. D. She won the competition.
6. What can we know about Pasterski from paragraph 3?
A. She got high marks when studying at MIT.
B. She shared her study experience on social media.
C. She got her master's degree at Harvard University.
D. She often took adventurous activities during her college life.
7. What's Pasterski's interest now?
A. Building planes. B. Exploring the space.
C. Researching planes. D. Studying physics.
8. What did Pasterski encourage people to be in her interview?
A. Considerate and creative. B. Generous and outspoken.
C. Confident and determined. D. Energetic and curious.

China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition systems. A Chinese company says it has created a new facial recognition system that can identify people even if they are wearing masks (口罩). Engineers at the Beijing-based company say their system is the first to be created to effectively identify people wearing face masks.
The company told a news agency that a team of 20 people built the system in about a month. The system is based on existing technologies developed over the past 10 years. The process involved adding a collection of about 6 million unmasked faces and a much smaller collection of masked faces, the company said.
The company is now selling two main kinds of products that use the new technology. One performs "single channel" recognition, which is designed to be used at the entrances to buildings. The other product is a "multi-channel" recognition system that uses groups of surveillance (监视) cameras. It can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people within a second.
"When people are wearing a mask that covers the mouth and the nose, the recognition rate can reach about 95%, which can ensure that most people can be identified," said Huang, vice president of the company. He added that the system's success rate for people not wearing a mask is about 99.5%.
However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. "In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost. In such cases recognition is graunchy," Huang said.
People respond (响应) differently to the new technology. While some citizens have been against using such tools, the majority have accepted the technology as an effective way to reduce crime and catch criminals.
9. What did the company do to build the system
A. It used the latest technology. B. It gathered many face images.
C. It employed hundreds of people. D. It added a collection of masks.
10. What can we know about the new system
A. Its success rate is affected by cameras.
B. Its performance varies with the location.
C. It does better in identifying unmasked faces.
D. It can recognize groups of people in seconds.
11. What does the underlined word "graunchy" mean
A. Tough. B. Specific. C. Normal. D. Different.
12. What is most people's attitude towards the new system
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.

A new study suggests that long periods in space can cause the human heart to shrink (缩小). The study—by a team of American researchers—comes as the U. S. makes plans to build a long-term base on the moon and prepares to send astronauts to Mars.
Part of the study was based on the experiences of the retired astronaut Scott Kelly. The U. S.space agency NASA says that during his career, Kelly spent more time in space than any other American astronaut. One of Kelly's stays aboard the International Space Station (ISS) lasted 340 days. Researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT Southwestern) in Dallas collected and analyzed the physical data during Kelly's long stay aboard the ISS. The goal was to learn the effects of weightlessness on heart health and performance. The team found that during Kelly's stay in space, the left ventricle (心室) of his heart shrank about 0.74 grams per week.
Dr. Benjamin Levine is a professor at UT Southwestern. He was the leader of the research. In a statement, he explained that because of the conditions in space, the heart does not have to work as hard to pump (输送) blood uphill from the feet. Over time, this can cause shrinkage. In an effort to keep their hearts and bodies healthy in space, astronauts are required to perform different kinds of exercises throughout their stay.
Reductions in heart size are also seen in patients who spend long periods in bed because they are lying flat and the heart does not have to work as hard to pump. A second part of the study examined data from a long-distance swimmer who spent nearly a year trying to cross the Pacific Ocean. The swimmer, Benoit Lecomte, was chosen because he swam more than 2,800 kilometers over 159 days. Levine says long-distance swimming has similar effects on weightlessness. The study showed that during Lecomte's swim, his left heart ventricle shrank about 0.72 grams per week.
13. How did the researchers carry out their study
A. By interviewing astronauts.
B. By examining collected information.
C. By experimenting aboard the ISS.
D. By comparing people in different fields.
14. What are astronauts asked to do to keep their hearts fit in space
A. Do various exercises. B. Get regular blood tests.
C. Stay in space for less time. D. Stand on their heads sometimes.
15. Who is least likely to suffer from a shrunk heart according to the text
A. A patient spending a long time in bed.
B. An astronaut traveling in space for long.
C. A long-distance professional swimmer.
D. A well-trained marathon runner.

38. 你校正在组织英语作文比赛。请你以“The person I admire”为题,写一篇短文参赛,内容包括:
(1)人物简介;
(2)钦佩的原因。
注意:词数80左右。
39. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Recently I was watching a stand-up comedy sketch (幽默短剧) by a comedian called Trevor Noah, a mixed-race comedian from South Africa who often discusses important topics. I was extremely impressed with his performance. The part which struck me most was his advice about travelling. He said, "The one thing you will never waste your money on is travelling." In my opinion this sentence should be everyone's life motto (座右铭).
This year I've had the opportunity to do a lot of travelling around Europe and it has shown me first-hand how much you can learn and develop by visiting different places. It is so wonderful to be able to go to a different country, listen to the different language, try local food and experience the different culture. Travelling allows you to step out of your comfort zone.
I've personally noticed how different I am since I started exploring more. Travelling has made me so much more confident and independent. It involves (涉及) being able to find good train or plane tickets, getting yourself to the airport, not to mention trying to find your way around a brand-new city. While you can be nervous at first, after a few trips you realise that maps are your best friend and it really isn't that difficult to figure out public transport. Travelling also helps you develop your organization skills! It is important to figure out how to get to different tourist attractions and plan your time wisely. However, it is also nice to learn to relax. On top of that, hostels, which are the best and cheapest, are a great way to meet new people from all around the world. It is fantastic when young people from different parts of the world come together; I've met so many strange and wonderful people this way.
So this is my advice—try and travel as much as possible, because the experience you will gain from travelling can't be taught at school and it will change your life.
