Unit 10 Connections
一、阅读理解(本大题共15小题,共30.0分)
A
Many consider George Bernard Shaw's body of work to be second only to Shakespeare's. Shaw possesses a deep love of language, high comedy, and social consciousness and this is evident in some of his best plays.
Pygmalion
Thanks to its musical adaptation (My Fair Lady), Shaw's Pygmalion has become the playwright's most famous comedy. It illustrates the comical clash(滑稽的冲突) between two different worlds. The upper-class Henry Higgins attempts to transform lower-class girl Eliza Doolittle into a refined lady. As Eliza begins to change, Henry realizes that he has become rather attached to his "pet project". But they don't end up as a couple.
Heartbreak House
In Heartbreak House, Shaw was influenced by Anton Chekhov, a Russian novelist, and populated the play with humorous characters in sad situations. Set in England during World War I, the play centers on Ellie Dunn, a young woman who visits a leisurely household filled with idle(无所事事的) men and women. In this play, Shaw demonstrates how much the society lacks purposes.
Major Barbara
The story concerns an idealistic young woman Barbara Undershaft. She shows her love for the poor and struggles to help them get rid of poverty and fights against armament manufacturers such as her wealthy father. Much of this play is a discussion between two differing ideas. Shaw called it "the conflict between real life and the romantic imagination".
Saint Joan
Shaw felt that this powerful historical drama represented his best work. The play tells the famous story of Joan of Arc. Shaw created many strong female roles throughout his career. With Saint Joan, Shaw reached the height of his fame as a dramatist. For a Shavian(萧伯纳的) actress, Saint Joan is perhaps the greatest and most rewarding challenge presented by the Irish playwright.
1. What can we know about Heartbreak House
A. It is Shaw's most famous play.
B. It is set at the backdrop of a war.
C. It shows the success of a woman.
D. It is adapted by Anton Chekhov.
2. Which play tells the heroine's efforts to help poor people
A. Pygmalion. B. Saint Joan.
C. Major Barbara. D. Heartbreak House.
3. Who is the leading character in the work judged to be the best by Shaw
A. Joan of Arc. B. Ellie Dunn.
C. Barbara Undershaft. D. Eliza Doolittle.

There's a little restaurant in a small Alabama town where there's no cash register and no prices, just a whole lot of soul and soul food. At Drexell & Honeybee's in downtown Brewton near the Florida border, the menu changes daily, but there's always a hearty selection of Southern dishes to enjoy: fried chicken and cornbread often show up at lunchtime from Tuesday to Thursday.
What makes this place special No matter how down on their luck a person is, they never have to worry about having no money for their lunch. Once you've finished your dessert—a blueberry cobbler, perhaps —you just leave whatever you can in a private booth near the restaurant entrance, even if that's just a little thank-you note.
The owners, a husband and wife team—Freddie and Lisa Thomas-McMillan—make no profit from their restaurant. Lisa once said, "Whatever needs people have, if we can help them, we will. It's our chief mission."
100% of the donations go back into serving people food. "It's a feeling of great happiness when knowing that the customers leave with a full stomach, a full heart, and the understanding that you're loved and worthy of love." Through the years, she's run a food bank. She's opened her home to the needy. She says it may have started in the second grade when she learned a powerful lesson about sharing from a little girl who always had a better sandwich, but shared it happily with Lisa in a daily trade. Of course, the pandemic has made running a restaurant a little more tricky in recent months. "But we figured out a way to do to-go orders and keep everyone safe. It is working out very well. We feel proud to be able to do what we do, with the COVID-19 pandemic affecting so many people."
4. What characteristic does Drexell & Honeybee's have
A. It requires no payment.
B. It has no menu or waiters.
C. It serves regular food every day.
D. It has the best dessert in Alabama.
5. What does the restaurant aim to do according to Lisa
A. Advertise the cuisine. B. Feed the needy.
C. Return a girl's kindness. D. Encourage donations.
6. What does the underlined word "tricky" probably mean
A. Annoying. B. Unforgettable. C. Significant. D. Tough.
7. Which of the following best describes Lisa
A. Helpful and kind-hearted. B. Creative and ambitious.
C. Determined and positive. D. Grateful and respectable.

Before the COVID-I9 pandemic arrived in Italy, the big worry about tourism was overcrowding: the impact on infrastructure, the environment, and the quality of life of residents from millions of tourists crowding the country's most popular spots in a handful locations, like Florence, Rome and Venice.
According to most estimates, the tourism sector (行业)is not expected to recover to pre-pandemic levels until late 2023 or early 2024, but political leaders and many working in the sector are taking steps now to reform the tourism sector to make sure that, as the tourism strengthens, it avoids the former overcrowding problems in tourist centers.
"Italy should not emphasize the dependence on big tour buses that all pull in to parking lots and overwhelm a small town for a few hours, but promote more high-quality tourism that shows visitors the country's wonders beyond the few dozen places everyone knows about," Gianfranco Lorenzo, head of the research department for Florence's Center for Touristic Studies, says. There's no reason why people should be lined up to see one famous site when there are many places that are just as important and just as impressive.
Those strategies are already in development. This summer many Italian cities are trying to focus the attention of visitors on outdoor attractions like sprawling gardens and architectural ruins, where visitors can remain spread out to keep coronavirus infection risks low. Florence's Uffizi Galleries, one of the most visited museums in Italy, has launched the "Uffizi Diffusi" initiative which includes displaying some of its collections in museums in smaller towns to help draw tourists who might otherwise have spent their time in overcrowded Florence.
Lorenzo says reducing the impact of tourists does not mean the country will have to host fewer tourists in the future. "In a few years we could even have more tourists than we had before the pandemic," he says. "But for that to be sustainable, they just have to be spread out more evenly."
8. Why does Italy adopt reforms in the tourism sector
A. To ease the crowdedness at tourist attractions.
B. To protect visitors from COVID-19 infection.
C. To limit the number of tourists coming to Italy.
D. To host more foreign tourists in the near future.
9. What can we infer about the "Uffizi Diffusi" initiative from paragraph 4
A. It aims to display more great works.
B. It hasn't been put into practice.
C. It will be supported by tourists.
D. It can help spread out visitors.
10. What is Lorenzo's attitude towards the future of tourism in Italy
A. Optimistic. B. Curious. C. Disappointed. D. Concerned.
11. What's the text mainly about
A. The future of tourist spots in Italy.
B. The problem of overcrowding in Italy.
C. The reform of the tourist industry in Italy.
D. The impact of the pandemic on Italy's tourism.
D
What do you do when nobody is around to take your picture You take a selfie. But what about selfies in space NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who famously became the second man to walk on the moon in July 1969, said that he took the first selfie in space during the Gemini 12 mission in 1966.
"For me, it needs to be digital to be a selfie," argues Jennifer Levasseur, who is in charge of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. According to Levasseur, the concept of a selfie is directly linked to Internet culture and the human desire to interact on social platforms. "The thing that makes a selfie is sharing it," she says.
Still, astronauts have been carrying cameras aboard space vehicles since the 1960s. In 1966, Aldrin used a Hasselblad camera designed specifically for space. Hasselblad also painted the first camera in space matte black (磨砂黑) to reduce reflections in the window of the orbiter. But cameras used in space need to survive extreme conditions, like temperature swinging from -149°F to 248°F, so Hasselblad painted later models silver.
Astronauts had to pull the film magazines (胶卷盒) out and leave their cameras behind when they returned to Earth, because early space missions were restricted by a weight limit on the return trip.
A big change in space camera technology came after the sad loss of the space shuttle Columbia, which broke apart on its return to Earth in 2003. "Fearing that they would never be able to bring the film back from space and lose all that hard work accelerated the push for being digital," Levasseur says.
Today, astronauts can have access to the Internet and social platforms in space and post true space selfies taken by digital cameras.
12. How did the Hasselblad camera adapt to space temperature changes
A. By changing its inner design. B. By reducing its reflections.
C. By making it stronger. D. By painting it silver.
13. Why were cameras left in space on early space missions
A. To lighten the load of the spaceship.
B. To test cameras under extreme conditions.
C. To prepare for the next space exploration.
D. To take more pictures on the next trip.
14. What advanced space camera technology
A. The invention of new films.
B. The popularity of space selfies.
C. The concern about the loss of valuable data.
D. The fear of falling behind in the space race.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. The Origin of Selfies in Space
B. The History of Selfies in Space
C. The Significance of Selfies in Space
D. The Technique of Selfies in Space

37. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
One pleasant New Year morning, Edward rose, washed and dressed himself very quickly. He wanted to be the first to wish everyone a happy New Year. He looked in every room, and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
He left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother and three children shaking with cold.
"I wish you a happy New Year," said Edward, as he was happily passing by. The man shook his head. "You do not belong to this country " said Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak the English language. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time." Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in a very difficult situation and required some help. He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.
How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which doubtless meant, "We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you forever."
When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought. He hung his head for a moment, but quickly looked up. "I have bought no books," he said, "I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry."
Paragraph 1:
"I think I can wait for my books till next New Year," he continued.

37.【答案】 "I think I can wait for my books till next New Year," he continued. His father looked at him with a blank look. He explained that it was a German family that was badly in need of help. They even didn't have enough clothes to wear. Edward's explanation made his father understand what had happened and he expressed that he couldn't agree more with him. In order to recognize the work Edward did, his father bought the books, saying, "Never can we turn a blind eye to those in need. What you have done will make a happy New Year."
Hearing what his father said and holding the books his father gave him in his arms, Edward felt he was the happiest boy in the world. He felt the sweetness of helping others. A few days later, Edward met the family again, and they still thanked him a thousand times. It seemed the city was bathed in brilliant sunshine because of Edward's feelings. Additionally, he knows that help means under any circumstances we all can give a hand to people in a dilemma. Maybe bare words would be enough for them.
