Accompanied by her father, using a combination of aid and free climbing and taking advantage of some special equipment and ropes for protection, 10-year-old Selah made it to the top of El Capitan on June 12 after five days of big wall climbing.
Climbing the challenging and adventurous Nose Route of El Capitan was a labor of love for Selah in more than one way. Her parents, Mike and Joy Schneiter, fell in love on this 3,000-plus-foot huge rock and she has always wanted to feel the way that her parents felt when they were up there together. Selah showed great interest in rock climbing at an early age. She wore her first set of rock-climbing equipment shortly after she learned to walk. She first dreamed of climbing EI Capitan when she was 6 or 7.
El Capitan is a famous mountain-sized rock in Yosemite National Park. Getting to its top is no easy task. El Capitan with its difficult Nose Route, which runs more than 3,000 feet high up the center of the rock's face, is considered one of the world's hardest big wall climbs and has attracted the best climbers over time. But never before had a youngster accomplished it.
Selah's achievement caught national attention. Outside Magazine called her the youngest documented person to climb the Nose. Ken Yager, president of the Yosemite Climbing Association, said he also couldn't think of anyone younger who has done it.
Selah is humble about her El Capitan accomplishment. "I'm not necessarily a special kid or anything like that," she said. "There were a few times when I would be so worn that it would kind of discourage me from holding on. But overall, it was just great to keep plugging away."
Selah shared this advice with other young climbers dreaming of big walls, "It doesn't take necessarily a super special person to do something like that. You just have to put your mind to it."
4. What do we learn about Selah climbing El Capitan
A. She began her climbing on June 5.
B. She got inspired by her family history.
C. She managed without any external help.
D. She was the first female to reach the top.
5. What is the purpose of paragraph 3
A. To state El Capitan s history.
B. To prove EI Capitan s popularity.
C. To introduce El Capitan s location.
D. To stress the challenge of climbing El Capitan.
6. Which of the following best describes Selah
A. Determined. B. Generous. C. Warm-hearted. D. Fortunate.
7. What may be Selah's advice for other young climbers
A. Dream big and aim high.
B. Be committed to your ambition.
C. Chance favors the prepared mind.
D. Nothing is impossible for a genius.

It was once a shoreline buried by enough garbage to make it invisible(看不见的), thus, given the unfortunate nickname "toilet bowl". Now the Philippines' Manila Bay beach is totally different, compared with a few months ago. It happened so suddenly and extremely that it brought tears to the eyes of the local people.
The clean-up started on 27 January, when 5,000 volunteers descended on Manila Bay to remove over 45 tons of garbage, marking the beginning of a nationwide environmental campaign. But some two months before this great movement began, a quiet revolution was already underway.
During the first week of December 2018, Brooklyn-based Bounties Network collected three tons of garbage from Manila Bay over two days through a project that paid a small group of people, mostly fishermen, with a digital currency based on the Ethereum system.
For the most non-bank-using Filipino fishermen, this was a first-ever experience with a digital currency. It's one that proves decisive in enabling poor communities around the world to take up arms in the fight against humanity's waste. There are signs that this recycling-for-digital-payment industry may be just about to take off. Earlier in September 2018, Plastic Bank, a Vancouver-based company powered by IBM technology, also started a similar project. They set up a project in Naga, a town in southern Luzon, the country's largest island, building a collection point to let people exchange plastic and recyclable materials for digital payouts through a system.
That both these pioneers have chosen the Philippines as their first location is not surprising considering the country's contribution to ocean waste. A study in The Wall Street Journal in 2015 revealed that the Philippines make the third-largest amount of plastic waste into global oceans.
8. Why did people call Manila Bay "toilet bowl"
A. It looked like a huge bowl.
B. It was covered by rubbish.
C. It was characterized by special toilets.
D. It functioned as a waste treatment plant.
9. What does the underlined phrase "descended on" in paragraph 2 mean
A. Suddenly arrived at. B. Completely depended on.
C. Occasionally looked around. D. Gradually disappeared from.
10. What made poor communities willing to fight against waste
A. The benefits to their homeland.
B. The desire to make a difference.
C. The chance to escape ocean pollution.
D. The experience with digital money.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. An Online System Helps End Ocean Pollution
B. Filipinos Contribute to Ocean Protection
C. Plastic Bank Is Powerful in Recycling Ocean Waste
D. Digital Revolution Pushes the Reuse of Plastic Waste
D
Artificial intelligence (AI) still can't see the future, but a new algorithm(算法) may come close: using nothing but written movie summaries, the AI can consistently tell which films will play well-or awfully-to critics and audiences. If the model can be further improved, it could one day help producers predict whether a movie will be a failure at the box office, before it's even made.
To test several models, researchers used plot summaries of 42,306 movies from all over the world. The models broke down the summaries into sentences and used something called sentiment(情绪) analysis to analyze each one. Sentences considered "positive", such as "Thor loves his hammer", would receive a rating closer to positive one. And sentences that were considered "negative", like "Thor gets into a fight" would be rated closer to negative one.
Generally, successful movies such as 1951's Alice in Wonderland-which scored 80% on the movie-rating website-had frequent waves in sentiment; unsuccessful ones, such as 2009's The Limits of Control, varied less. It's not important whether the films begin or end happily, the researchers say. What's important is that the sentiments change continually.
The sentiment ratings in each summary were then simplified into a single score to reflect how often the sentiment changed. The researchers tested three different methods of arriving at a final score. All three could predict fairly accurately whether a movie would be unpopular, and one method worked especially well for guessing which thrillers and comedies reviewers would hate.
The methods were not as efficient at guessing which movies would succeed, but they still predicted the results more accurately than random chance. In the future, the researchers say their methods could be bettered to predict the amount a movie could earn at the box office and help producers decide which movies to invest in. The system's fair judgment might give an advantage to less well-known writers, the researchers add. It could also potentially save the public from having to sit through films like Jaws: The Revenge, which online critics and audiences alike rate terrible.
12. How can AI help predict the future of movies
A. By testing plot models.
B. By analyzing films' sentiment.
C. By writing summaries.
D. By consulting critics and audiences.
13. What is the key factor for a successful movie according to the researchers
A. A happy ending. B. Famous movie stars.
C. A well-known producer. D. Frequent sentiment changes.
14. What benefit will the methods possibly bring
A. Helping producers invest wisely.
B. Assessing a movie s quality accurately.
C. Increasing box office earnings.
D. Providing written summaries for critics.
15. What's the researchers' attitude to the model
A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. Tolerant.

There was a rich couple who was holding a big party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was expensive, but they didn't mind paying a lot for it. After buying everything they needed, they called a porter(搬运工) to carry it and drop it off to their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn and he looked as if he wasn't even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for sending their goods to their home. The old porter quoted them $ 20, a price well below the market rate. Yet, the couple argued and bargained(讨价还价) with the porter and finally settled for $ 15. The porter was trying to make money for every meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy, thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter. They paid him $ 15 in advance and left after giving the porter their home address. They reached their home and two hours passed, the porter still hadn't delivered their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, "I always tell you not to trust such a person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn to feed himself for one time in a day; and you handed him everything we bought for our big party. I am sure he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him."
They both went to the market. On their way, near the market, they saw a young porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their stuff in his cart!
Paragraph 1:
The angry wife asked him, "Where is that old thief This is our stuff."

He isn't able to earn money to even have a single meal of the day. He was on the way to deliver your stuff, but he, who was hungry and sick, couldn't gather the strength to go any further in this heat of the noon. He fell down and he handed me $ 15. His last words were, "I have taken an advance for this delivery. Please take this and deliver it to this address."
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes and turned to his wife. "He was hungry and he was poor, but he was an honest man," the husband said. The wife felt very ashamed of what she had done. She had no courage to look at her husband's eyes. Suddenly it dawned on her that honesty has no class.
