Last year at Chicago Academy High School I joined in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's walk-a-thon. I was glad that I chose it as a service learning project. We walked around the neighborhood according to the map we were provided earlier. I chose to serve this organization because I wanted to help the people who have leukemia and lymphoma. I felt that raising 40 dollars and walking 3 miles was the least I could do for the children who have to go through all the medical treatments.
This service learning project did not connect any of my 7 classes, although it did allow me to work on my communication skills in a way. It would have been boring to just walk and not to talk to anyone, so I was talking to people while I was walking. The whole experience was positive. I thought that a group of students coming together for this cause was great. The only negative thing I could think of would probably be the cold. I'll make sure of bringing a scarf next year.
The project was not very demanding. I did step out of my comfort zone(舒适区) by asking others for money to donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I'm not very used to asking others for money, but I knew the money was for others so it wasn't really that much of a problem.
The experience taught me that there are a lot of diseases people don't know about, and we should all learn about them so we can better help each other. This project taught me what both of these diseases were. I believe if more people know what these diseases are and how they affect others, they will surely want to help as much as they could.
4. Why did the author take part in the project
A. To spread knowledge about the diseases.
B. To receive the medical treatment.
C. To improve his communication skills.
D. To collect money for sick children.
5. What did the author think of the service learning project
A. It was a little boring. B. It was a physical test.
C. It was overall satisfying. D. It was useful for his classes.
6. How did the author probably feel when asking others for money
A. Awkward. B. Comfortable. C. Confident. D. Sad.
7. What does the author call on us to do
A. Step out of our comfort zones.
B. Put our health the top concern.
C. Learn more about the diseases.
D. Show more respect for the patients.

(情境创新) Fifth graders in eastern China's Zhejiang Province started compulsory(强制的) classes in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM). The move came with a government push to make TCM treatments more widely available and teach more children about the medical customs.
Zhejiang is the first province to make the subject compulsory and not all parents welcomed it. "It's more practical to teach children first aid instead of TCM," said Wu Hua, a father who lives in Hangzhou. But Xie Anqi, a mother also from Hangzhou, said, "It's meaningful to give the children a general idea of TCM when their minds are open to all types of knowledge. Until Western medicine was brought into China about a century ago, TCM was used to treat all illnesses, which shows how amazing TCM is."
The first 100,000 copies of a new TCM textbook are on their way to Zhejiang schools, and another 600,000 books are being printed. In response(反应) to parents' worries, the book's chief editor, Fang Jianqiao, explained that the classes teach children not only TCM, but also traditional Chinese culture. "It's a good initiative(新方案) and can facilitate the general understanding of TCM—an important part of traditional Chinese culture-among the country's youth," Jiang Bin, a primary school teacher in Hangzhou said.
The Outline of the Strategic Plan on the Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine(2016-2030), a document issued by the State Council listed teaching TCM to primary and middle school students as a goal to achieve until at least 2030. Another government document declared training TCM doctors to be a key task until 2030, and encouraged doctors who specialized in Western medicine to study TCM instead.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. The aim of starting TCM classes. B. The cause of TCM s popularity.
C. The necessity of learning TCM. D. The content of TCM teaching.
9. What can we infer from Xie Anqi s words
A. Children will learn TCM much more easily.
B. TCM played an important part in treating illness.
C. TCM will replace Western medicine in no time.
D. Children will have a strong interest in TCM.
10. What does the underlined word "facilitate" mean in paragraph 3
A. Promote. B. Change. C. Produce. D. Establish.
11. What s the best title for the text
A. TCM has won national recognition
B. TCM helps children learn about China

The fire at Notre-Dame de Paris has been put out, but its spire and a large part of its wooden roof have been damaged. The terrible damage causes a sudden pain for people all over the world. What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonder anymore.
But the good news is that we can see them through a video game called Assassin's Creed Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre-Dame as it was before the fire. Further, with virtual(虚拟的) reality technology one can even look around the undamaged Notre-Dame as if it were still there. Maybe digital technology could help to better protect the architectural cultural heritage.
The idea of making digital models of ancient buildings to save their data dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning(扫描) the ancient buildings, building 3D models with a series of images, as well as measuring(测量) everything accurately, engineers can make a copy as accurate as the real one.
As computers and smartphones are hugely popular, the digital model has great useful value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural relics without touching them. The virtual tour of the Mogao Caves in Gansu Province is a good example of this as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them. Furthermore, it can make the digitized cultural relics more famous through the Internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Great Wall became very popular at the Hanover World Expo, which increased the number of foreign tourists visiting the site in the following years. Above all, it preserves all the information of the cultural relics.
Of course, however accurate a model is, it is not the original(原件). Maybe we will have better technologies in the future, but digital technology offers a useful way to preserve the architectural cultural heritage at the moment.
12. What can we see about Notre-Dame in the game
A. The big fire. B. Its original look.
C. Its wooden shape. D. The damaged Notre-Dame.
13. What do engineers do to create a digital copy of the ancient buildings
A. Build 3D models of full size.
B. Scan photos of the buildings.
C. Measure all their parts exactly.
D. Take apart the ancient buildings.
14. How does the author prove the useful value of the digital copy
A. By giving examples. B. By classification.
C. By comparison. D. By listing data.
15. What is the author's attitude towards the application of the technology
A. Delighted. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.

My husband, Donald, took our daughter Sarah out for some ice cream the night before driving her to college. As they were walking back to the car, they saw a young man sitting on the ground and giving his puppy a cone.
"A cute dog," Donald said as they walked by. "A free dog," the young man replied. Donald asked him what he meant by that and the man explained. He was moving away from Vermont and did not think the travel would be good for the dog. He had raised her from a small puppy.
The man said she was a 6-month-old cross between the Doberman and the Labrador named Rhubarb. Donald took his phone number. The rest, as they say, is history.
Rhubarb was a sweet dog and very friendly and loved everyone. Whenever someone came to the house, she was always happy. She also got along with Willie, an older Samoyed we had. Willie was not well and died about a year later, but, fortunately, Rhubarb's company helped him keep going for longer than that if he had been alone.
But the interesting thing about Rhubarb was that she never barked(吠叫). She would sometimes get excited when she saw a chipmunk and make a little crying sound.
One hot night when she was about 4 years old, we went to bed with the windows open and the doors unlocked. At about 3 a.m., I woke up to the sound of Rhubarb barking. I woke Donald and we got out of bed.
Rhubarb was coming toward us. We turned on the lights and noticed the door to the kitchen was open. Then we saw the door leading into the house from the garage was also open. We quickly locked all the doors, and we did not get any sleep that night. It was deep into the night, so we didn't call the police.
Paragraph 1:
The next day we noticed there was cigarette ash (烟灰) on the floor.

3. be similar to“与....相似”,是固定短语,故填to。
4. 分析句子结构可知,空处修饰名词,应用形谷词,professional意为“专业的”。故填Professional。
5. 此处为there be句型,空后的主语是名词复数形式,且此处陈述客观事实,应用一般现在时,故填are。
6. dance作“舞蹈,舞步”时是可数名词,根据空前的Most和空后的include可知,此处应用名词复数。故填dances。
7. use sth.to do sth.

The next day we noticed there was cigarette ash (烟灰) on the floor. Actually, it was a thief who entered our kitchen and garage. Much to our relief, thanks to Rhubarb, the thief stole nothing. I called the police to report the break-in. I also told them nothing had been taken, but they sent a police officer over to talk with us anyway. In fact, recently many local homes had been broken in on the weekend。
Many people's wallets and purses had been stolen, but mine mus right next to the door. Obviously, Rhubarb had scared the thief away before he or she could steal it. When the police officer left, he said we should reward Rhubarb with a big steak dinner. Rhubarb lived to be almost 12 years old, but that night was the only time she barked in her entire life. Fortunately, she never saw the need to warn us of any other danger. We were very thankful to Rhubarb. We loved her like a member of the family。
