I will never forget the first dessert class at a cooking school in France, where a group of anxious dessert students (myself included) were tasked with preparing an apple pie. It looked simple enough, but I soon realized that it was as far from simple as it could be. However, my knife and I mastered this French classic, as well as dozens of others.
After graduating, I found a job at a modem American restaurant in Florida. Despite the restaurant's tiny kitchen, I was excited to work under Sylvia, the executive chef. The first job she gave me was to make apple pies. I couldn't have been more excited—until I realized these pies were actually in the form of a dumpling. But my education had made me stick to French tradition. It took me a minute to get comfortable with this way of cooking again. Slowly, I was forgetting my French tradition, and beginning to go with the flow more. The response (反应) from diners was good. Our desserts were sold out on most days.
Then one day, chef Sylvia gave me the chance to make a new dessert and planned to add it to the menu for a week. Surprised and touched by the chance, I decided to go all out. I created a seasonal citrus mousse made with Florida oranges and pistachio croquant (a crisp, delicate cookie). But after a week, the apple pie dumplings continued to far outsell my special dessert. A sense of frustration went inside of me.
It finally made me aware that there isn't one "right" way to understand a cuisine, or set of ingredients (食材). Where one chef can look at apples, butter, and flour and see a French apple pie, another might see baked apple dumplings. Even though each person's translation may be different, I think they all deserve a spot on the table. And that was the most important lesson I discovered, through something as seemingly simple as fruit and dough.

Fifth graders in eastern China's Zhejiang Province started compulsory (强制的) classes in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The move came with a government push to make TCM treatments more widely available and teach more children about the medical customs.
Zhejiang is the first province to make the subject compulsory and not all parents welcomed it. "It's more practical to teach children first aid instead of TCM," said Wu Hua, a father who lives in Hangzhou. But Xie Anqi, a mother also from Hangzhou, said, "It's meaningful to give the children a general idea of TCM when their minds are open to all types of knowledge. Until Western medicine was brought into China about a century ago, TCM was used to treat all illnesses, which 4 shows how amazing TCM is."
The first 100,000 copies of a new TCM textbook are on their way to Zhejiang schools, and another 600,000 books are being printed. In response to parents9 worries, the book's chief editor, Fang Jianqiao, explained that the classes teach children not only TCM, but also traditional Chinese culture. "It's a good initiative (新方案) and can facilitate the general understanding of TCM—an important part of traditional Chinese culture—among the country's youth," Jiang Bin, a primary school teacher in Hangzhou said.
The Outline of the Strategic Plan on the Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine (2016 - 2030), a document issued by the State Council listed teaching TCM to primary and middle school students as a goal to achieve until at least 2030. Another government document declared training TCM doctors to be a key task until 2030, and encouraged doctors who specialized in Western medicine to study TCM instead.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about

Alongside air and water, food is a necessity for human beings to survive. But it's a lot more than that. As Mariette DiChristina of Scientific American wrote: "The closest relationship we will ever have is not with any fellow human being. Instead, it is between our bodies and our food."
Nowadays, for most people in the world's richest countries, food is a hobby, an interest, and even something fashionable. Turn on the TV in the US, UK or France, and you'll find at least one channel feeding this popular obsession (痴迷). And most of us know at least one person who thinks of himself as a "foodie". It's almost impossible nowadays to check our social media apps without at least two or three photos of delicious meals appearing on our screen—however annoying we may find it.
But behind the fancy recipes and social media bragging (吹嘘), many of us forget how much we take food for granted. This is why World Food Day is held each year by the United Nations(UN) on Oct. 16. The day allows the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization to stress both the progress that has been made against hunger, and the great amount of progress that still needs to be made. Take Kenya for example. This East African nation has been suffering terrible droughts. The result is that people are beginning to starve (挨饿) and children in particular are suffering. This may seem shocking to know, especially as many cultures outside of Africa think of food in a completely different way.
So what can we do on World Food Day One good way to spend it would be to feel humble and value what we have. After all, food is essential for our survival, but not everyone is as lucky as we are when it comes to dinner time.
12. Why are Mariette DiChristina's words mentioned
A. To discuss a new problem in the food industry.
B. To point out the food shortage problem worldwide.
C. To stress the connection between food and humans.
D. To show the importance of food for human survival.
13. What can be inferred about food shows on TV
A. They turn many people into foodies.
B. They are very popular among viewers.
C. They are replaced by social media apps.
D. They often mislead people about food issues.
14. Why is World Food Day celebrated
A. To call on people to reduce food waste.
B. To stress and popularize food cultures.
C. To show the progress in achieving food safety.
D. To raise awareness of the issues behind hunger.
15. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph
A. Give more food to those in need.
B. Share food with unlucky people.
C. Feel grateful for the food we eat.
D. Skip dinner sometimes to save food.

37. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My husband, Donald, took our daughter Sarah out for some ice cream the night before driving her to college. As they were walking back to the car, they saw a young man sitting on the ground and giving his puppy a cone.
"A cute dog," Donald said as they walked by. "A free dog," the young man replied. Donald asked him what he meant by that and the man explained. He was moving away from Vermont and did not think the travel would be good for the dog. He had raised her from a small puppy.
The man said she was a 6-month-old cross between the Doberman and the Labrador named Rhubarb. Donald took his phone number. The rest, as they say, is history.
Rhubarb was a sweet dog and very friendly and loved everyone. Whenever someone came to the house, she was always happy. She also got along with Willie, an older Samoyed we had. Willie was not well and died about a year later, but, fortunately, Rhubarb's company helped him keep going for longer than that if he had been alone.
But the interesting thing about Rhubarb was that she never barked (吠叫). She would sometimes get excited when she saw a chipmunk and make a little crying sound.
One hot night when she was about 4 years old, we went to bed with the windows open and the doors unlocked. At about 3 a.m., I woke up to the sound of Rhubarb barking. I woke Donald and we got out of bed.
Rhubarb was coming toward us. We turned on the lights and noticed the door to the kitchen was open. Then we saw the door leading into the house from the garage was also open. We quickly locked all the doors, and we did not get any sleep that night. It was deep into the night, so we didn't call the police.

37.【答案】 The next day we noticed there was cigarette ash(烟灰) on the floor. Actually, it was a thief who entered our kitchen and garage. Much to our relief, thanks to Rhubarb, the thief stole nothing. I called the police to report the break-in. I also told them nothing had been taken, but they sent a police officer over to talk with us anyway. In fact, recently many local homes had been broken in on the weekend. Most people's wallets and purses had been stolen.
Many people's wallets and purses had been stolen, but mine was right next to the door. However, Rhubarb had scared the thief away before he or she could steal it. When the police officer left, he said we should reward Rhubarb with a big steak dinner. Rhubarb lived to be almost 12 years old, but that night was the only time she barked in her entire life. Fortunately, she never saw the need to warn us of any other danger. We were very thankful to Rhubarb. We loved her like a member of the family.
