14. Wright brothers were great inventors. They made the world smaller and made the dream of flying come true.
Wright brothers loved drawing and designing at their early age. One year, their father gave them a toy that could fly. They were very excited about it. From then on, the dream of flying was planted in their hearts.
When they grew up, they ran a bike repair shop, but they didn't stop their study in airplane. When they heard of the death of the German glider(滑翔机) expert (专家), Otto Lilienthal, they made up their mind to invent a safer airplane.
Wright brothers studied how birds flew when they were free. They also learned from others and then made their first glider. But it flew only about one meter high and dropped. They were not discouraged by the failure, and found out why they failed. They thought there was not enough power for the glider. So they put a car engine on the glider to provide more power. This time, the glider could fly farther, but it still dropped because the engine was too heavy.
They continued to improve the propeller (螺旋桨)and engine again and again. Finally, an engine engineer designed a powerful but light engine for them. On December 17,1903, Orville Wright took the "Flyer I" up in the air and flew it for 12 seconds. Wilbur Wright took turns with his brother flying their plane. The next two flights lasted twice as long as the first one. On the fourth flight, the plane stayed in the air for 59 seconds. Unluckily, "Flyer I" was badly destroyed by a sudden wind after it landed. The first successful airplane was never flown again. But they kept trying. In 1908, their plane flew about two hours.
Thanks to Wright brothers' invention, we can fly from Beijing to Los Angeles in 11 hours while it takes 11 days by ship.
