一、阅读单选
April 22 is World Earth Day— a day to remind people to protect our planet. On that day, my family and I took the “bottle of garbage challenge”. We challenged ourselves to produce as little garbage as possible in 24 hours. The garbage needed to fit inside of a 700-milliliter bottle.
I was highly alert (警觉的) that day. I thought about what waste every action would produce. When I solved math problems on paper, I tried to use every blank space. I also reused a straw (吸管) and napkins (纸巾). In the end, I put all my trash in a 600 ml bottle. There were apple cores, eraser crumbs (碎屑) and other things.
Grandma needed to cook supper, so she had plenty of kitchen waste. When she cooked, she picked off leaves. There were also eggshells and food packages. And of course, there were leftovers after dinner. But she asked us to eat most of the dishes and waste as little food as possible! Although grandma produced lots of trash, she was able to fit it all into a 700 ml bottle!
My father and mother worked online. They sent and received emails. So they didn’t produce any paper waste and made the least trash in my family.
I’ve benefited a lot from this activity. I realized that everyone can make lots of trash every day. In the long run, it will become a great burden (负担) for our mother Earth. We should start with small actions to protect it.

D.The writer’s parents made the most trash in the family.
On April 16th, Shenzhou XIII astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu safely came back to Earth from the Tiangong space station. There are many interesting facts about their landing. Let’s take a look!
Speedy returnThe mission set a new speed record. When the Shenzhou XII came back from the space station in 2021, it took about 28 hours. This time, Shenzhou XIII cut down the number of orbits (环绕地球圈数) from 11 to five. It took just 9 hours to return! Landing upright The re-entry capsule (返回舱) landed upright (直立的). This landing position is rare in China’s space flight history. Only Shenzhou VI and Shenzhou XIII have successfully done so. To achieve this, astronauts must let go of the parachute (降落伞) with precise timing. Landing upright makes sure that astronauts have the softest landing. Keeping seated The astronauts felt good after landing. But they still needed to sit on chairs. The long space journey changed their bodies. Their muscles and bones became weaker. In the next few months, they will gradually get used to Earth’s gravity (重力).

The school’s new 30-minute dance program has taken place of the traditional exercise program during the break. “I think we need a change because students have lost interest in doing the original exercise program,” Zhang told reporters.
The headmaster said he saw a group of people doing this kind of dance in a public square last summer and decided to learn it by himself. In October, he introduced the newly choreographed(编排的) dance to all of his students and shortly after, even the teachers joined in. “Now students don’t play with their mobile phones very much. I sometimes find them watching different dance videos and learning new moves!” the proud headmaster said.

But during the Lantern Festival, it was a tradition that all people, including those young women, would go out for lantern shows. At that time, the festival activities like this provided unmarried men and women with a chance to get to know each other, so they could look for their own partners during enjoying the lanterns. When Yang Fan was taking a walk around the Yuliang Island, she saw a black swan(天鹅) in the grass. Yang Fan knew that swans could be fierce(凶猛的). But as she got close to this one, it didn’t move.
She was sure that the swan needed help. So Yang covered the bird’s head with her jacket to keep its cool, picked it up carefully, and held it in her arms. She decided to send it to the Animal Care Center, but the center was across the Han River, far from the park. She didn’t know how to carry the swan there. Luckily, some strangers driving by gave her and the swan a lift to a nearby bus stop.
On the bus, no one seemed surprised by “the unusual passenger”. Instead they were worried. Someone helped Yang Fan call the center on the way. And Li Tao, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the bus stop and drove them to the center. There, the animal doctors found that the swan was poisoned, caused by eating something used to kill mice. The swan was well looked after at the center. She even made a friend—a little dog. Thanks to people’s love and care, luckily, she was cured(治愈) two months later.
“It’s a moving story. Yang Fan travelled about two hours and it was really a long way.” Says Li Tao. “And all the strangers wanted to give her and the swan a hand.” He adds, “I am happy to see that more and more people have realized the importance of protecting the wild life since Xiangyang began to build the civilized(文明) city.”

Whales are the largest living organisms(生物) living on the earth. When a whale dies in the ocean, its body usually falls to the sea floor and a special deep-sea ecosystem will be formed in a long time. Scientists give a name to this: the whale fall(鲸落).
Recently, some scientists on a Chinese research ship called Tansuo-1 found a whale fall at the depth of 1,600 meters in the South China Sea. Whale falls are hardly found by humans. This is the first time China has found this type of ecosystem. So far, less than 50 modern natural whale falls have been found by humans around the world.
The whale fall is really important to deep-sea animals, as it provides food for them. Usually, the whale fall goes through three stages(阶段). The first stage comes just after the whale dies. The body attracts(吸引)lots of big sea animals such as sharks and they come to eat the body. This stage lasts from months to years. At the second stage, smaller animals come for the whale’s bones and leftovers(骨头和剩余物). This stage can last one or two years. Bacteria(细菌)play a role at the third stage. They break down what has been left. This stage can last as long as 100 years.
The whale fall found in the South China Sea is 3 meters long. It is still at the first stage. The scientists said it would take them a long time to study the whale fall because they knew it would help them understand the deep-sea ecosystem better.

My name is Ann Wells and I’m a Grade 9 students in No.1 Middle School. I’m an active person and I love sports. I’m curious about everything. I often ask questions, but I learn best by doing. Knowing about yourself means not only that you find out what you’re good at and what you like, it also means discovering what you’re not good at and what you don’t like. Both help you to see your aim (目标) in life.
Although most students would be unhappy if they found that they had failed a very difficult physics course, they have in fact learned a lot about themselves. They know that they should not become engineers or physical scientists. So failing can help a student to live a much happier life if he or she draws something out of the failing. They may then decide on their aim and choose the kind of work they would be fit for and they would like to do.
It is impossible to decide whether or not you like something until you have tried it. If you decide that you would like to play the piano, you need to take more than one lesson before you can know whether you are really interested in it or you are able to do well.
It is not enough to want to be a great pianist. You also have to like the hard practice and long training before you become one. If you would enjoy being a great pianist but hate the work, forget it.
It’s a good plan to try as many ideas as possible when you are still young. And then you will be able to find out what your true interests (兴趣) are.

Long ago in a small village, there was a place known as the House of 1,000 Mirrors.
A little dog learned about this place and decided to visit it one day. When he arrived, he jumped happily up the stairs (台阶) and went into the house. He looked around with his ears up high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself looking at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile and was answered with 1,000 great smiles that were just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself: “This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit often.”
In this same village, another little dog who often felt upset decided to pay a visit to the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw 1,000 unfriendly-looking dogs looking back at him, he made a low and angry sound at them and was frightened (受惊的) to see 1,000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself: “What a terrible place. I will never go back there again.”
