It’ll be a nice sport, and I’ll be able to do something good at the same time.
Jason Moore, 18 This summer, I’m going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They’ll teach me what to do, so I’ll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.
Trish Anderson, 16 I’m going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I’ll work for a program called Reading For Life. Every day, I’m going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me.

Four beggars usually met at an old house at the end of the day. One day, they were very angry because none of them had got much in their begging bowls.

The fourth beggar had not done much better. “I only got the handful of old, dried beans, but they aren’t very nice!”
As they sat around the fire, one of them had a great idea. “Let’s put all that we had together and boil them. In this way, we can make a tasty dish and share it.” They all agreed.

In 2007, Barrington Irving became the youngest person to fly alone around the world. He was just 23 years old—and he built the plane himself. How did he achieve this
Irving’s interest in flying started when he was 15. He was working in his parents’ bookstore in Miami, Florida. One of the customers was a pilot. Gary Robinson. One day, Robinson asked Irving if he was interested in flying. Irving didn’t think he was smart enough. But the next day, Robinson took Irving to an airport. He showed Irving inside the cockpit(驾驶舱) of a Boeing 777. That experience changed Irving’s life.
Irving really wanted to fly, but flight school was expensive. To achieve his dream, he worked different jobs. He washed airplanes and cleaned swimming pools. At home he practiced flying on a video game. In the end, he got enough money for flight school.
At flight school, Irving achieved his dream of learning how to fly. But he wasn’t finished. Next, he planned to build his own plane and fly alone around the world.
Building the plane was difficult. Irving asked more than 50 companies for airplane parts. Most said no, but he persisted(顽强地坚持) in asking. Three years later, he had parts worth $300,000. Columbia, an airplane company, agreed to build a plane using the parts. Soon, his airplane was ready to fly.
On March 23, 2007, Irving began his round-the-world trip. After 97 days-with 145 hours in the air-he landed back in Miami. A crowd of cheering people were there to welcome him.
Irving saw many young people in the crowd, and this had a powerful effect(影响) on him. He wanted to use his experience to help other young people achieve their own dreams.
“Everyone told me what I couldn’t do.” says Irving. “They said I was too young, that I didn’t have enough money. But even if no one believes in your dream,” he says, “you have to pursue(追求) it.”

I’ve noticed that conversations with my children have started to turn into something that I don’t like. It could be my mistake. I don’t always think before I open my mouth.
For example, my kids might call me to tell me about something that’s been bothering(打扰) them. Then, as soon as they’re finished, I go into mom mode(模式). I just can’t stop. It’s my default setting(默认设置).
I am the queen of unwanted advice. When I get one of my adult kids on the phone, I become an expert on everything and anything, which I’m obviously(明显地) not.
I want to be part of their lives. More importantly, I want to prevent them from making mistakes that seem so obvious to me. But they just want someone to listen.
I’m hardly alone in this. Over lunch the other day, a friend told me that her son seldom listened to anything she said. I know that feeling all too well. But I’m learning that talking to is not the same as talking with.
Giving advice to children can be full of problems. Though we may see ourselves sharing our wisdom(智慧), they see something else. They see a controlling parent who hasn’t accepted the fact that they’re adults with their own thoughts.
They’re not looking for any suggestions. They may not even want an immediate(立刻的) solution to a difficult problem. What they’re hoping for is a safe place to talk with a person who loves and supports them.
Because of this, I’ve set the goal of becoming a better parent by being a better listener. It’s not an easy task for parents like me who think they’re just being helpful. But I’m trying to do it anyway.

The driving instructor(教练)got out of the car and walked inside the building. We looked over at Barbara. She shook her head and put her hands over her face. She was very upset. What would her friends say
Her next driving test came about one month later, and this time, she was ready. We all went to the testing site(地点)where the instructors worked. “Don’t stick around at the testing site. It makes me nervous!” she told us. So we agreed to go for a walk. We had about an hour to wait until she would be finished.

The brush pen, one of the “Four Treasures of the Study”, was invented thousands of years ago. However, the oldest pen was just a stick or a piece of bamboo. It was difficult for people to write well on thin silk.

One day after hunting (狩猎), Meng made his way home with some wild rabbits on the horse back. Fat and heavy, one rabbit’s tail left a long trail (痕迹) on the ground when they moved on. Suddenly a good idea came to his mind when he saw it, “If I tie the rabbit’s hair to a stick, would it be easy to write with ”
On arriving home, he tied the rabbit’s hair to a stick and tried writing with it. But the rabbit’s hair was too smooth to write well and wasted a lot of silk. Meng was so disappointed that he threw away his “invention” into a stone hole in the yard.

Looking around and seeing that they were just buying sandwiches and drinks, I thought $500 or $600 was too much and $300 was enough. I opened a register and asked all soldiers to come through check stand(收款台) No.1. The customer quickly left the store. As the young men and women began to come through with their things, they all had their wallets out and I got to tell them that all their things had been paid for! As it turned out, they were only some of the soldiers who were about to enter our store. They just kept coming and coming.
