When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.
Anything we didn’t eat at one meal was leftovers. I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftover. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon for us in the mornings, she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn’t actually taste like bacon!
I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week’s meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself, my boys, my husband or my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.
Life is just like a feast. However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Each moment that you don’t live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.
29. What does the underlined word “it” refer to
A. The bacon. B. The dish. C. The oil. D. The bottle.
30. What did the writer do in order not to waste food
① Eating less to have more leftovers.
② Throwing food into the rubbish bin.
③ Asking her family or dogs to eat leftovers.
④ Buying things according to her shopping list.
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①④ D. ③④
31. What does the underlined word “feast” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. A big meal. B. A great moment.
C. A huge pot. D. A fresh beginning.
C
A spoon of pickles (榨菜) can sometimes make a meal taste way better. Recently, a new type of pickle is being discussed: “digital pickled vegetables”. It stands for the videos people watch while eating that make their food more delicious.
______①______. The topic received more than 16 million clicks on Sina Weibo and about 100,000 people joined in the discussion. Instead of having a good time with friends and family during a meal, many young people in China keep their eyes on TV shows or short videos. Many believe that their food is tastier with the digital pickles.
______②______. Can this habit influence your diet According to a research paper published in 2019, you may eat more without noticing it. The international research team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating habits on four different days. The habits included eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines and without distraction (干扰). After studying their diets, the team discovered that eating with a distraction increased caloric intake by about 15 percent.
______③______. To find out the reason, the team invited two groups of people: one group ate while listening to sounds about another person eating and the other listened to sounds that helped them imagine themselves eating. The results showed that the second group ate less since they paid more attention to their meals. When eating with the “digital pickles”, our attention can be distracted, which leads to eating more than expected.
______④______. A research project led by the University of Sussex, UK, pointed out that activities which need lots of attention trick many people into overeating. The team invited 120 people to do different tasks while providing them with drinks and snacks. “Our study shows that if you’re eating or drinking while your attention is distracted by a difficult task, it is less possible for you to tell how full you feel,” one of the researchers Martin Yeomans explained.
32.Which of the followings is a kind of digital pickles
A. Drinks. B. Snacks. C. Videos. D. Tasks.
33. What can we know from Paragraph 3
A. Eating with digital pickles may make people get fatter.

C. Different eating habits made little difference to people’s diet.
D. Volunteers were divided into four groups by the research team.
34. Where can you put the sentence “This works not only for eating meals but other difficult tasks as well.”
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
35. What is the best title for the article
A. Finish tasks while eating B. Imagine yourself eating
C. Eat less and exercise more D. Enjoy dinner with a show

King Uther died. Since he had not left a son, it seemed that there was going to be a bloody fight to see who would be the next King.
Merlin, the great wizard, called a meeting of all the important people in the country to decide how they should choose their King. In the churchyard was a large stone that had not been there before. Stuck into the stone was a large sword, and written on its handle in letters of gold were these words “Whoever can pull this sword out of this stone is the true King.” So all the important people who thought they had any right to be King tried to pull the sword out of the stone, but none of them succeeded. Finally they decided to hold a large fighting competition so that the knights could try each other’s strength and fighting ability.
Sir Ector heard about the competition and came to London, with his two sons Kay and Arthur. Kay hoped to win the competition and became famous. Arthur was just there to help support Kay, and to manage his horse and weapons. But just as they were riding to the competition, Kay realized that he had left his sword at the place where they were staying.” “Go and get it for me, boy!” he said to Arthur ---- not very politely.
Arthur ran back to the place they were staying, but it was locked ---- everyone had already gone to see the competition. What could he do As he was wondering what to do, he looked around and saw the handle of a sword on the other side of a wall. He jumped over the wall and took hold of the sword. Then using his mind to focus his strength as Merlin had taught him to do before, he easily pulled the sword out of the stone.
Since he was in a hurry, he did not look at the sword too carefully, but rushed back to give it to Kay. Kay was just going to say “You stupid boy! This isn’t mine! when he noticed the words on the handle. Kay went to his father, Sir Ector, and said, “You see, I have the sword, and that means that I am the true King!”
Sir Ector led both Kay and Arthur back to the place where the sword had been found. Then he called all the important people to come and see what had happened. When they were all there, Sir Ector asked Arthur to put the sword back into the stone. People all tried to pull the sword out of the stone, but no one could. Then Arthur pulled it out as easily as taking candy from a baby. After they had gone through this several times, some people there asked Merlin how this boy could be the true King. Merlin told them Arthur’s story. When they heard it, all of them went down on one knee and promised to help Arthur to become King.

High on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau lies China’s “water tower” Sanjiangyuan ---- the source of three important rivers: the Yellow River, Yangtze River, and Lancang River. The three rivers provide water for about 50 percent of people in China. However, during the mid-20th century, the area of snow, grasslands and lakes in Sanjiangyuan were becoming smaller because of climate change and human activities. Many wild animals living in the area were facing extinction.
On Jan 24, 2003, China set up Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve to better protect the area and the wildlife there. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the setup of the reserve. The government is continuing to improve the environmental protection management system. That is why Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve has become part of Sanjiangyuan National Park, standing for the strictest protection measures.
Local people have improved their understanding about environmental protection and have tried hard to look after the environment in Sanjiangyuan over the years. In Nangqen County, most people live on selling caterpillar fungus they’ve found in grasslands. They used to carry food with them in plastic bags and left the bags behind. But now, local people are regularly called on to pick up waste on the grasslands. People also take their food waste down the mountains. The grasslands have put on a new look.
Social organizations have also worked hard to protect Sanjingyuan. They are working on nature education. By taking teenagers to mountains and lakes, the organizations are trying their best to encourage young people to take part in their environmental protection activities.
Thanks to these efforts, Sanjiangyuan is changing for the better. In these years, the population of wild animals has been rising. According to Xinhua, more than 70,000 Tibetan antelopes now live there. And more than 1,000 snow leopards can be found in the area. It is now green, lively and peaceful.
But Sanjiangyuan is still facing some difficulties. The biggest challenge now is the possible reduction of grasslands and melting frozen soil caused by global warming. So it is hoped that more people can join in the environmental protection of Sanjiangyuan and keeps improving its environment.
