A few weeks later, Lewis came home and turned on the TV to a news story about a fourteen-year-old boy, Jim. He had become famous after posting videos of his dunks (扣篮), and like Joy, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Joy in. He was riveted, watching dunks again and again.
At the time, it seemed that watching Jim would simply be an exciting moment for Joy. And had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a family friend had already asked the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Jim to build Joy’s confidence.

Nowadays, one of the great challenges of caring for children is the roadblock(路障) caused by the learner driver. Your child is almost an adult, but just before the last step, you need to spend 120 of the most stressed hours of your life locked with them in a car, their teenage hands behind the wheel. You know the phrase behind the wheel It means driving.
① When I decided to teach my first child to drive, I was nervous. I’m not a natural teacher, as I am easily bored and quickly get angry. Worse, I’m not a natural driver. I even failed to get a license at the first time. I can get from A to B without too much trouble, but once I get there, I’m likely to drive into a wall while parking.
② Happily, my first child was a fast, hard-working learner, and always keeping an eye on traffic signs. Still, there were enough small mistakes. And by the time it was his younger sister’s turn, my nerves were already shot. My daughter was bright and talented, but on the roads, it seemed that she was just out of control. Even after hours of professional driving lessons, her every move behind the wheel is fresh and unexpected. Even after 40 hours of driving, mistakes happen at times. We will be driving along beautifully for 30 minutes, and once I begin to relax, my daughter will sail through a red light.
③ Even if she passes her test, who can be sure that she won't forget the next red light as soon as she's out there on her own One of my friends has refused to teach her daughter to drive as she is "just not responsible enough" to be on the road. A middle-aged friend of mine gave up trying to get his license after the eighth failure.
④ We often think that everyone should drive, but perhaps there are some people who just shouldn’t be behind a wheel. What if my daughter is one of them Well, I don’t know. At least not yet. If it’s the end of the world, maybe we can stop driving lessons for a while
56. Why does the author mention her own driving story in Paragraph 2
A. To explain what makes a good driver.
B. To explain why her children couldn’t drive well.
C. To explain why learner drivers cause roadblock.
D. To explain why she was worrying about teaching driving.
57. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 probably means ________________.
A. the author was pleased B. the author was nervous
C. the author was relaxed D. the author was expected
58. “As much as I expect her to have a license, I find myself wondering if it’s a good idea.” can be put in __________.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
59. The author would probably ________________ in the following days.
A. continue to teach her daughter to drive
B. let her daughter take professional driving lessons
C. encourage her friend to take the driving test again
D. advise her daughter to give up her driving lessons
60. The best title for this passage can be ____________________.
A. Challenging yourselves B. Being a natural driver
C. Worries behind the wheel D. Discovering your ability

For middle and primary school students, being able to cook has become a must. They will also need to learn how to plant vegetables, raise poultry (家禽) and maintain home appliances (修理家电) under new requirements for labor education.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) brought out a new standard for labor education in schools last year. Starting from the 2022 fall semester (学期), students in primary and middle schools have to take courses on labor skills at least once a week.
Labor education helps students value hard work. It includes things like household chores (家务), on-campus labor and community volunteer services.
The new standards include three types of labor tasks. The first is for things like everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home appliances. Next is productive labor, including agriculture, making traditional handicrafts, and applying new technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting (激光切割). The third type is service work, which includes volunteer work.
Schools in China have traditionally placed more focus on studying, and many have seen household chores as a waste of children’s time. But according to the MOE, labor education must be built up to help students cultivate (培养) social values and develop an interest in labor.
Online, people have been busy discussing the new standards on social media.
Liu Fang, a mother of 6-year-old twins in Beijing, strongly supports labor education. For the past year, she has trained her daughters to do household chores and make simple dishes for the family.
“The main idea is to let them share responsibility as family members and become independent as early as they can,” said Liu. “Through doing housework, their hand-eye coordination (协调), time management and organization skills can be trained and it’s also good to help them relax.”
Through such education, Liu said her twins have found fun in doing chores and are more independent.
61. What do we know about the new labor education standard
A. It is for students from primary school to college.

C. It started in the fall semester of 2022.
D. Students have to take three labor courses every week.
62. What can students learn through labor education
a. How to plant vegetables. b. How to raise chickens or ducks.
c. How to be more focused in class. d. How to fix computers or fridges.
A. abc B. abd C. bcd D. acd
63. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Why students should receive labor education.
B. What labor education was like in China in the past.
C. The types of labor education included in the new standard.
D. How students find a balance between their study and labor tasks.
64. What does Liu Fang think of labor education
A. It’s too simple for students. B. It isn’t fun enough for students.
C. It takes up too much of students’ free time.
D. It helps students develop different skills.
65. What is the passage mainly about
A. New courses for primary school students.
B. Labor education for primary and middle school students.

Helping Others
As we all know, helping others is helping ourselves. However, I didn’t truly understand the meaning of helping others until I actually took action.
One day, I saw my friend, Mike, crying alone. Later, I learned that he couldn’t play volleyball well. Without thinking twice, I decided to help him. We practiced together, whether it was on hot days or rainy days. Through hard work, his skill greatly improved. I still remember the sweet smile he gave me when he succeeded. Whenever I think of the smile, a sense of pride runs through my body.
Thanks to this experience, I come to realize that when helping others, we can spread warmth and make our world a better place. So, give a helping hand when others ask you for help.
