When an astronaut gets out of a spaceship or a space station in space, we call it a spacewalk.
Alexei Leonov, from Russia, became the first to go on a spacewalk on March 18,1965. The first spacewalk lasted 10 minutes. Zhai Zhigang is the first Chinese spacewalker, and he did his first spacewalk on September 27, 2008. On November 7, 2021, he went on a spacewalk again with another Chinese astronaut Wang Yaping. They stayed outside the Tiangong space station for 6.5 hours.
Why do astronauts go on spacewalks That’s because spacewalks allow them to work outside their spaceship while still in space. One job astronauts do on a spacewalk is scientific experiments. Sometimes they also have to repair things. When there is something wrong with the outside of the spaceship or the space station, astronauts need to go on spacewalks to repair it.
When astronauts go on spacewalks, they have to wear spacesuits. Spacesuits don’t just make astronauts look cool. They can protect spacewalkers from the extreme environment of outer space. They protect astronauts from very hot and cold temperatures, harmful space dust and radiation. Spacesuits also give astronauts oxygen to breathe and water to drink during spacewalks. With a spacesuit, astronauts can move around in space for several hours safely.
There are some ways for astronauts to train for spacewalks. One is by going for a swim. Floating* in space is a lot like floating in water. It’s more difficult than moving your body on land. Astronauts usually practise spacewalks underwater in a large swimming pool. Another way that astronauts train for spacewalks is by using virtual reality (VR). They wear a helmet* with a video screen inside. The screen can show a video of what they will see during the spacewalk. At the same time, they wear special gloves so that they can feel like they are on the spacewalk.

We live on a farm near the town of Rock Creek. Lots of people have moved away. They say Rock Creek will be a ghost* town soon. But Daddy isn’t leaving.
The day the rock fell from outer space, I was feeling sad. Our car was broken, and we had no money to fix it.
I was outside when I heard it. Boom! Something passed overhead.
Mama and Daddy showed up quickly. “An airplane must have broken up,” Daddy said. “Luckily it didn’t hit our house.
“Luckily it didn’t hit Karl,” Mama said.
“Wow! A meteorite*,” my brother Andy shouted excitedly.
“A meteorite ” Daddy asked.
“Yeah,” Andy nodded with certainty.
“I hope it didn’t break our car,” Daddy said.
Andy laughed, “You don’t have to worry about the car anymore. That meteorite is probably worth a million dollars.”
What Andy said was true. People came by every day to see it. Pretty much everybody wanted to buy the rock. We did make money selling small meteorites. But people wanted the whole rock. Someone offered 2 million dollars for it. Then someone offered 3 million, and then 5 million ... But Daddy turned them all down.
About three months after the rock fell, Daddy got us together. “A museum wants to pay us 7 million dollars for the rock. We’ve got two choices. We can sell it, or we can keep it.”
“We can’t keep it,” Mama said. “We can’t have people here all the time.”
Daddy smiled, “I agree. But this rock is bringing lots of visitors to our town. The mayor said the hotels and stores are making money from them. She said they’d build a little museum around our rock.”
“But we would get nothing ” Andy asked.
“Yes,” Daddy replied. “How many little meteorites have we sold ”
“About 600,” Andy answered. “And we have at least that many left.”
“We’ve made a lot of money,” Daddy said. “And our car has been fixed. My point is that the rock has done us a lot of good. I believe getting what you need out of something is better than getting all that you can out of something.”
“But it’s not just up to me,” he continued.
Daddy handed each of us a small meteorite and kept one for himself. “Go to the kitchen one at a time. If you want to keep it, put your meteorite in the box. If there aren’t four meteorites, we’ll sell it.”
Andy went first, then me, then Mama. Finally, Daddy came in. Without looking he reached inside the box and pulled out the first meteorite.
“One,” we said. He reached in again.
“Two ... three ...”
Daddy felt around inside the box. He pulled his hand out and opened it.
“Four,” he said quietly.
