Some libraries use unique architecture to encourage visitors to explore the bookshelves and settle down with a new book, or use roving libraries to bring books to hard-to-reach populations. No matter how they achieve it, these novel libraries are keeping the magic of reading alive.
Bishan Library (Singapore)
Built in 2006, this library with skylights and trellises, is meant to invoke a modern glass treehouse. Glass pods of varying colors stick out of the building randomly to create cozy yet airy corners for reading throughout the building. At the same time, a more open-plan children’s room on the basement level invites interaction while preventing noise from filtering upward and disturbing those concentrating in the lofty perches above.
Stuttgart City Library (Stuttgart, Germany)
Opened in 2011, this nine-story public library is characterized by its attractive white color scheme (lit by blue light at night), its bold cubic shape. This cultural center for the city, designed to feel open and full of light, can be entered from any of its four sides, and people can borrow artwork as well as books.
The Camel Library Service (North Eastern Province, Kenya)
To combat low literacy rates in the desert of Kenya, the government created a roaming library composed of nine camels bringing books to villages. The library travels four days a week serving the region’s nomadic people. With more funding, they plan to increase their reach both in distance and the books they carry.
Macquarie University Library (Sydney, Australia)
A wonderful combination of cutting-edge and sustainable ideas, this building was made from recycled materials, features a green roof, and was designed to look like the shape of a eucalyptus tree. It is also state of the art, using robot cranes to bring requested books to the front desk.

Chinese elements are seen everywhere at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, from stadium construction and brand marketing to mascot manufacturing (制造), providing strong support for the grand football event.
The golden-bowl shaped stadium is located 15 kilometers north of Doha, capital of Qatar. Serving as the largest sporting venue in Qatar, it hosts important matches. To make the football pitch (场地)and the audience area cooler and more comfortable, independent cooling stations were built outside the stadium, sending cool breezes into the stadium. Hassan Al Thawadi said the complex structure proves the great skills and service ability of Chinese firms, adding that those who watch the games in the venue should be grateful to Chinese engineers and constructors.
In 2020, Chinese manufacturer Yutong was selected to provide service vehicles for the Qatar World Cup. The company equipped its buses with a device that protects the motors from sand and mud, employed liquid-cooling power batteries and adopted an intelligent temperature control in the buses. It is reported that Qatar has imported 1,500 buses from China, including 888 electric ones to meet the transportation demand. It marked the first time for a major global sports event to use Chinese new energy buses in such large quantities.
In a desert 80 kilometers west of Doha, there is a vast photovoltaic (PV) power station with a total area equal to 1,400 standard football pitches. Built by the PowerChina Guizhou Engineering Co., Ltd., the 800 MW Al Kharsaah Solar Power Plant has over 2 million PV panels that are able to generate 1.8 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity for Qatar each year. It can supply around 300,000 local households and mainly reduce 900,000 tons of CO2 emissions on an annual basis.
More Chinese elements can be seen both on and off the field in Qatar. The appearance of referees Ma Ning, Shi Xiang and Cao Yi marks the first time in the recent 20 years for Chinese referees to judge World Cup games.;

Osa is an athletic yet stubborn 62-pound German shepherd(德国牧羊犬). The six-year-old dog has mastered the art of sniffing(嗅) out cancer and is key to a research project that has the potential to change oncology(肿瘤学).
Osa is part of an ambitious effort launched five years ago at the University of Pennsylvania that aims to develop one of the most powerful scent-detection machines in the world: the canine nose. She is able to distinguish between blood samples taken from cancer patients and their healthy peers simply by sniffing them.
In fact,Osa is one of five cancer-detection dogs trained by Annmarie DeAngelo and her co-workers at the university’s Penn Vet Working Dog Center. The most important goal is to develop an “electronic sniffer” that can approach the cancer-sniffing superpowers of Osa and her partners. Osa arrived at the Penn Vet Working Dog Center from a breeder at two months of age. Ever since, she has taken training. The process is demanding,challenging and repeated until the dog has mastered the most essential task of all. Finally, she has succeeded in sniffing out cancer. To transform Osa’s remarkable abilities into an electronic nose, researchers use a similar approach to train the machine.
An electronic nose prototype(雏形)has been built, and it’s successful in sniffing out cancer 90 to 95 per cent of the time. That team has also correctly detected different types of cancer, and is building a cancer-detecting device for the National Institutes of Health. One objective is to be able to distinguish between early- and late-stage cancer.“It would be incredible to identify people at an early stage and really have an impact on saving lives,”says a researcher.“The dogs have been able to detect that. With that ability, a blood test could be sent to a central lab, or ideally performed in a doctor’s office, making some hidden cancers a thing of the past. We expect that the cancer-sniffer device will be complete in a short time.”;
8. What can we learn about Osa from the first two paragraphs
A.She used to be a strong German dog.
B.She was hard to deal with in the research.
C.She uses her nose to know the presence of cancer.
D.She can change the development of the oncology.;
9. Which word can best describe the training Osa received
A.Strict. B.Complex. C.Unstable. D.Endless.;
10. What can we infer from the researcher’s words in the last paragraph
A.Blood tests will be more difficult in the future.
B.There will be more dogs used for detecting cancer.
C.Distinguishing cancers is important in early experiments.
D.Hidden cancers may be detected by an electronic nose soon.;
11. What is the most suitable title for the text
A.The Results of a Study on Special Dogs
B.The Importance of Dogs in Detecting Cancers
C.The Approaches to Distinguishing Cancers
D.The Problem of Having a Cancer Blood Test

When things went wrong, Ittleby Fein always had something nice to say.
When Dad forgot about the pizza and it burned, Ittleby comforted him by saying it would still taste good. And he was right. The pizza edges were dark and crispy, but the middle wasn’t half bad. When Ittleby’s friend David got a low score on the spelling test, Ittleby said that he would do better next time. And, sure enough, David studied hard and got 100 percent the next week. When his teacher, Mr D, bumped into a bookstand in the library, Ittleby told him not to worry as Mrs Bog wouldn’t be upset. He was right. The librarian just laughed and helped pick up the books.
Ittleby looked on the bright side. And everyone liked that about him. Everyone, that is, except Hazel. Hazel was the new kid in the class. On her first day, Ittleby said, “Nice to meet you, Hazel. I think you’ll like it here.” Hazel stared at him. “I doubt it.” Ittleby didn’t know what to do. He’d never met anyone like Hazel.
When Mr D said they’d have recess (休息) inside because of the rain, Ittleby said, “Every cloud has a silver lining.” “A silver lining ” Hazel shook her head. “Clouds are white. Maybe gray. Where do you get this stuff ” Ittleby felt as if the wind had been knocked out of him. Outside the window, the clouds had rolled over the sun. The room felt darker.
“Bad things come in threes,” said Hazel. “No outdoor recess is number one. What will the second thing be ” The class didn’t have to wait long to find out.
Greta was carrying a tray (托盘) of paints during art class. She tripped (绊倒), and the paint went flying. There was blue on the floor and red and black on the walls. Hazel declared it to be the second bad thing. Ittleby didn’t know what to say. Hazel seemed so sure about the Rule of Three Bad Things.
Emma came to look at Ittleby’s painting. “It’s beautiful. I especially like the grassland.” she said.

42. She picked it up, not realizing she had paint on her fingers. Hazel pointed and said, “Ittleby’s picture is messed up! There’s number three.” Instead of being angry, Ittleby said, “If I add wings, the fingerprints could look like butterflies.” Slowly and carefully, Ittleby added wings to all the fingerprints. Miraculously, there were butterflies on the painting. Then Ittleby said, “Hey, let’s make a sea of butterflies. Everyone, dip a finger into the paints, and make a butterfly on my painting.” Everyone was excited and left a fingerprint on Ittleby’s painting. A sea of colorful butterflies appeared. But only Hazel didn’t make one.
“Want to add one ” Ittleby asked Hazel, holding the painting in his hands. Hazel thought about it, and then nodded. She dipped her finger into the yellow paint and gently pressed it onto Ittleby’s painting. She carefully added wings, trying her best not to mess Ittleby’s painting. She made a really beautiful butterfly with a broad smile. “It looks great,” said Ittleby. In fact, bad things happen, but good things happen, too. And sometimes, there are good things hiding where you don’t expect them.
