while引导的时间状语从句强调主句动作在从句动作进行的过程中发生，从句的谓语动词必须为延续性动词，常用进行时。从句用过去进行时，主句用一般过去时。
While I was watching TV, Tom came in.
强调主句动作发生时，从句动作正在进行，常用while引导从句。主句常用一般过去时，从句常用过去进行时。
当我正在河边钓鱼时，我看到附近有一条空船。
While I was fishing by the river, I saw an empty boat nearby.
While I was sleeping in the bedroom, someone knocked at the door.
David fell while he was riding his bike.

when引导的时间状语从句通常与瞬间性动词或延续性不强的动词连用。瞬间性动词指动作极为短暂，瞬间结束。如： start, begin, hit, jump, knock等。
when引导的时间状语从句与瞬间性动词连用时，用一般过去时，主句用过去进行时。

One day, I was going out with my friends. We were having a picnic in the field and I saw something strange. A white cat with a pink nose was sitting in a tree.
