Look at the sentence in the present perfect continuous tense. Find more examples from the previous text and discuss the function of the tense.

Lead in
We are now camped on the ice and we have been managing to survive, but spring is coming, and the ice will soon begin to melt.
We have been struggling for days, but things on Elephant Island are going from bad to worse.
Activity 1 Observe and summarise the function of the present perfect continuous tense.
1. She has always been working hard.
她工作一直很努力。
2. He has been teaching in this school since 1990.
他自1990年就一直在这所学校教书。
3. They are tired and thirsty, because they have been planting trees all the morning.

Observe and analyse
小结:现在完成进行时表示动作始于过去,持续到现在(刚刚停止)或将来(动作继续进行下去)
Activity 2 Observe and identify the differences between the present perfect continuous tense and the present perfect tense.
1. I have read the book.
I have been reading the book.
2. I have waited for you for two hours.
I have been waiting for you for two hours.
3. They have lived here since 1970.
They have been living here since 1970.
They have lived here.
用在现在完成时表示“终止”,
用于现在完成进行时表示“延续”
延续性动词跟一段时间连用,其现在完成时和现在完成进行时,意思基本相同,即动作到目前都没有结束。这类动词有live, stay, remain, sit, stand, lie,wait等。
延续性动词的现在完成时和现在完成进行时,若跟时间段状语连用,可表示状态延续至今。如果没有,则表示动作或状态在过去曾发生过,但现在已结束。
