1. I left my house late and when the competition started, I was still making my way to school.
make one’s way意为“前往；费力地前进”，强调克服重重困难，想方设法到达目的地。常与介词to/towards连用，表示方向，其后接表示地点的名词。

Fish Red and Fish Black once lived in a pond. They lived there for a long time until one day Nod came.
Nod was carrying a fishing net and basket. When Red saw him through the water, he thought of the stories he heard from other fish and decided to take action.
