五、阅读理解

At noon, I would race breathlessly home, a ten minute walk from my school. My mother was waiting for me with pleasure to have lunch while I shared what happened at school.
I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, hardly had I stepped on stage when every word escaped me. Finally, my teacher asked me to change to a narrator's part. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
Under the rose vine, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英), as if a painter had touched our landscape with shades of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. "I'm going to dig up all these weeds, " she said, pulling it up by its roots. "From now on, we'll have only roses in this garden."
"But I like dandelions" I argued. "All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions."
My mother asked thoughtfully, "Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it?" I nodded, pleased I had won her over. "And that is true of people too, " she added. I burst into tears, a mixture of relief and regret swelling up as I told her what had happened.
"But you will be a beautiful narrator, " she said, encouraging me as she did. "The narrator's part is important, too." Composing myself gradually, I began to accept the narrator's part. Then came the performance day. I was still nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. It was obvious that my mom secretly put the flower there, which magically gave me confidence.

After a long day under the beating sun, an ice cream might be a tempting treat. But would you be able to enjoy it if you knew it was made from insect "milk?" Gourmet Grubb, a food company, is hoping to use ice cream to introduce the public to the world of eating insects. Its ice cream uses EntoMilk, a dairy alterative made from insects known as the black solider fly, which is full of nutrients and friendly to farm and produce. "The ice cream flavors include chocolate, peanut butter and Christmas spices. We set out to change the way insects were seen, produced and used in the food industry, " said Leah Bessa, who co founded Gourmet Grubb in 2017, "We were expecting a lot of push back. However, people said the first bite was not a taste of disgust but a pleasant surprise and they couldn't wait to have one more."
According to Bessa, EntoMilk has "a slightly taste of earth" and gives the ice cream "a rich, creamy taste". The insect "milk" ice cream is made with natural ingredients, such as raw honey, cocoa, spices and organic peanut butter. But it's not just about the taste — Bessa says the insect "milk" is also high in nutrients that are comparable to fish and meat like beef, chicken, and pork. EntoMilk is five times higher in protein than dairy.
"Insects need very little water, feed and space to grow, " Bessa explained, "They also produce little or no greenhouse gases compared to traditional livestock." Insects can be farmed indoors in small, controlled environments and they can be raised in urban areas, reducing the time of transporting the milk to the city. It also means they are less at risk of being impacted by outer climate patterns, which would affect cattle and crops. There is also potential for insect farming to reduce waste.
The United Nations predicts that the world will need to double food production to feed the global population by 2050 and has long promoted insect farming as a sustainable alternative protein source to traditional livestock. Although over 1, 900 insect species are estimated to be consumed by humans worldwide, insects are yet to reach the mainstream of Western cuisine.

D.EntoMilk is as good as conventional meats in nutrients.
57.What feature does insect farming possess
A.It is almost harmless to the environment.
B.It needs a large area of land to rise the insects.
C.It requires advanced technology to keep insect alive.
D.It saves huge amounts of labor to transport the milk.
58.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Insects have already been well welcomed by Western people.
B.Many countries will import insects to feed their population.

If you make a list of the world's top ten most challenging jobs, chances are that being a teacher will not make the cut. But think about the discouraging task millions of educators face each day as they try to shape a group of often bad tempered, wild kids into intelligent, well rounded individuals. That surely has to be the toughest job in the world, especially given that there is no promotion or bonus awaiting them even if they are wildly successful!
What if these all important individuals that we often take for granted disappear from our lives That was what Project Ed and Participant Media's Teach campaign asked filmmakers of all ages to imagine in their recently held competition entitled "A World Without Teachers". Its purpose was to inspire more young people to become teachers. However, the 62 amazing video submissions also serve as a reminder of how horrible things would be if we didn't have these selfless individuals guiding us through life. What was interesting is that even the youngest participants did not appear to be happy at the idea of not having anybody telling them what to do.
A high school student Savannah Wakefield showed what art would be without teachers in the world. Would Monet have discovered his talent for impressionism Los Angeles based Miles Horst, who won the 1,000 USD prize for the best adult submission imagines a world where teachers are replaced by a "brain box" in his fun lively entry.
Youth category winner Marina Barham's video represents a fact we all know but often forget. Teachers don't just teach, they inspire—something that no electronic device, no matter how smart, can do! So the next time you think your teacher is being "mean" for trying to channel you in the right direction, imagine life without him/her. We have a feeling that it will not appear as rosy!

阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
There is such a thing as a free lunch, it turns out, as long as you don't mind too much what it is. Tamara Wilson found hers a few streets away from her west London home—and as well as picking up some unwanted bread and fruit that would otherwise be thrown away, she made a new friend.
Wilson is one of 3.4 million people around the world using an app designed to encourage people to give away rather than throw away surplus(剩余的) food. "It's such a small thing, but it makes me feel good and my neighbour feel good. And a lot of small acts can end up making a big difference, " she said.
The last few years have seen an explosion in creative ways to tackle food waste by linking supermarkets, cafés, restaurants and individual households to local communities. Olio, the app used by Wilson, saw a fivefold increase in listings during 2022, and the signs are that this rapid growth is continuing into 2023,said Tessa Clarke, its CEO and co founder.
About a third of all food produced globally is wasted, according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Almost 1.4 billion hectares of land—close to30% of the world's agricultural land—is dedicated to producing food that is never eaten, and the carbon footprint of food wastage makes it the third contributor of CO2. Reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways of tackling the global climate crisis.
Olio, Clarke said, was an attempt to change this on a small, local scale. "The app connects people with others who have surplus food but don't have anyone to give it to because so many people are disconnected from their communities."Users of Olio post images of surplus food that others in the neighbourhood might want. Olio also has a network of 24, 000 volunteers who collect surplus food from local supermarkets and stores for app users to claim.
Despite the success of the app, it was hard to make a difference to the huge scale of food waste, Clarke added. "Even though we're doing well, we've only scratched the surface(触及表面). But if everyone makes small changes in the world, we'd dramatically reduce the amount of food that ends up in bins(垃圾桶)."
63.What does the author want to show by telling Wilson's story
A.People tend to use apps to order food.
B.People prefer to make friends on apps.
C.People find a high tech fix to food waste.
D.People show more concern for each other.
64.What's the consequence of food waste according to the text
A.Global warming. B.Loss of land.
C.World hunger. D.Poverty and inequality.
65.What does Olio do to help tackle food waste
A.It sells surplus food to those in need.
B.It allows volunteers to stay connected.
C.It provides a platform for people to promote food.
D.It fills the information gap between green communities.
66.What does Clarke think of the work on reducing food waste globally
A.It is a great success. B.It requires joint efforts.
C.It is beyond human power. D.It has won public support.
【答案】63.C
64.A
65.D
66.B
【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了一款名为Olio的App,该应用程序主要是将有多余食物的人与需要食物的人在社区中联系起来,充分的利用过度生产未被使用的食物,减少浪费。

63.考查细节理解。根据第二段中的“Wilson is one of 3.4 million people around the world using an app designed to encourage people to give away rather than throw away surplus (剩余的) food. ”威尔逊是全球340万使用该应用程序的人之一,该应用程序旨在鼓励人们放弃而不是扔掉多余的食物。可知,威尔逊使用应用程序来捡到一些面包和水果之外,还交了一个新朋友,即通过她的故事展示人们找到了解决食物浪费的高科技方法。故选C。
64.考查细节理解。根据第四段中的“Almost 1.4 billion hectares of land — close to 30% of the world's agricultural land — is dedicated to producing food that is never eaten, and the carbon footprint of food wastage makes it the third contributor of CO2. Reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways of tackling the global climate crisis.” 故选A。
65.考查细节理解。根据倒数第二段中的“The app connects people with others who have surplus food but don't have anyone to give it to because so many people are disconnected from their communities.”
根据最后一段中的“But if everyone makes small changes in the world, we’d dramatically reduce the amount of food that ends up in bins (垃圾桶) .”但如果每个人都能对这个世界做出小小的改变,我们就能大幅减少垃圾桶里的食物数量。可知,Clarke认为减少食物浪费需要每个人的努力付出,即需要共同努力。故选B。

C.It requires advanced technology to keep insect alive.

C.World hunger. D.Poverty and inequality.
65.What does Olio do to help tackle food waste

B.It allows volunteers to stay connected.
C.It provides a platform for people to promote food.
D.It fills the information gap between green communities.
66.What does Clarke think of the work on reducing food waste globally
A.It is a great success. B.It requires joint efforts.
C.It is beyond human power. D.It has won public support.
