When I first met professor Dalecki, I respected him greatly. He walked in the class in formal business suits as if he was prepared for a conference. He greeted everyone with a loud and clear "Good morning" like Jon Stewart from Daily Show. Then he started introducing himself and told everyone his name is Jacek, atypical Polish name that no one knows how to pronounce. He shared his frustration with the class and said, "People have already invented more than ten odd ways of calling my name in the past decade, and most Americans prefer to call me Jay-cek, but it is really ya-cek." From that moment, I knew there was something about him that made him stand out among all the professors I'd known before.
Professor Dalecki never believed in exams. He understood the huge workload that students have and never intended to make the exam questions hard for us to memorize. I once told him that I almost felt like the hell gate opened for me if I got a C. But he laughed and said, "If it were not for my loving girl friend giving me the exam questions, I can tell you I'd still be in high school somewhere in Warsaw."
What impressed me most was the extent he would go to avoid bias (偏见) in the classroom. He could turn an entire class into a battleground where everybody gets excited for a heated debate while staying objective as a mediator (调解人) who refused to force his own opinions on any side.
I visited him during his office hours once after class, eager to find out what his stancesare on some of the issues we've covered in the class, so I asked, "In China, people really aren't that serious with when it is okay for teenagers to drink. What do you think of the minimum drinking age in America being set at 21 "
"I'm not supposed to answer that question," he said.
"But why You don't seem to take any side during the class and I'm just curious to hear how you really feel!"
"I choose not to share it because I don't want it to cloud your own judgments about how you think about certain things."
At that moment, I finally understood how much effort it really took for Dalecki to let us do our thinking on our own. His incredible mindset (观念模式) still has a huge influence on me till this day. So I will end this article with his quote: "It is at this stage in the class that I must ask myself, 'Did I lie to you '"
54.Why did professor Dalecki share his frustration with the class
A.Because he wanted to be comforted.
B.Because he was really sad as his name was odd.
C.Because he cared much about the pronunciation.
D.Because he tried to introduce himself in a unique way.
55.What did professor Dalecki want to express in Paragraph 2
A.To laugh at the author.
B.To make himself stand out.
C.To tell the author not to be nervous about the exams.
D.To encourage the author to look for a girlfriend to help him.
56.What does the underlined word "stances" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Circumstances. B.Altitudes. C.Attitudes. D.Performances.
57.What can we learn from the text
A.Professor Dalecki is humorous and expert at education.

根据第一段中的“From that moment, I knew there was something about him that made him stand out among all the professors I’d known before.”
根据第二段中的“If it were not for my loving girl friend giving me the exam questions, I can tell you I’d still be in high school somewhere in Warsaw.”
根据第三段中的“He could turn an entire class into a battleground where everybody gets excited for a heated debate while staying objective as a mediator (调解人) who refused to force his own opinions on any side.”他可以把整个班级变成一个战场,每个人都为激烈的辩论而兴奋,同时作为一个调解人保持客观,拒绝把自己的观点强加给任何一方;以及第四段中的“In China, people really aren’t that serious with when it is okay for teenagers to drink. What do you think of the minimum drinking age in America being set at 21 ”在中国,对于青少年什么时候可以喝酒,人们真的没有那么认真。
根据第二段中的“If it were not for my loving girl friend giving me the exam questions, I can tell you I’d still be in high school somewhere in Warsaw.”如果不是我亲爱的女朋友给我出了考题,我可以告诉你,我现在还在华沙的某个地方上高中;第三段中的“He could turn an entire class into a battleground where everybody gets excited for a heated debate while staying objective as a mediator (调解人) who refused to force his own opinions on any side.” 故选A。
B
We humans have an outsize influence on this planet, and our winged, finned, and four-legged neighbors are in their tough time. Many animals have died out in response to the pressures, but some survivors are adapting. Some animals are showing off never-before-seen behaviors, shifting their diets, and even evolving different shapes, sizes, and colors.
The shifts can't be avoided and are likely permanent: There's no going back to when wildlife was still completely wild. "There's no place anywhere on the planet in its original condition. There are micro plastics at the bottom of the ocean, and Antarctica is melting. The world has changed because we're in it," says Tag Engstrom, a biologist at California State University.
African elephants in Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park are some daring members of the animal kingdom, who have found a will and a way to change right along with it.
Normally elephants use their 6-foot-long tusks to dig wells in search of water, lift objects, rip bark off trees, and even battle lions. In other words, the ivory appendages (附属品) are not just impressive to look at — they are highly useful tools. So it might seem strange that a significant number of African elephants in Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park, once an illegal hunting wildlife area, are now being born without tusks.
According to a 2021 DNA analysis published in the journal Science, that the elephants are born without tusks is no coincidence. After decades of being shot by ivory brokers, the leading elephants in some herds have passed down a trait that prevents the females' prize possessions from growing in — and helps them avoid being hunted. No one knows yet how widespread these genes might be in the greater population of African elephants, or how the loss of tusks might affect the mammals' survival overall. But the findings are a powerful, if depressing, reminder of the extremes a species might endure to escape from extinction.
58.How do the animals respond to humans influence
A.Many animals have evolved four legs.
B.Animals can survive despite the tough time.
C.Some animals are developing different shapes.
D.Animals live in harmony with human beings.
59.Why are the shifts likely permanent
A.We human beings are evolving.
B.Wildlife are not going back to the wild.
C.Plastics appear at the bottom of the ocean.
D.The planet is no longer what it was like before.
60.What can we infer from the 2021 DNA analysis
A.The elephants evolve the new trait by chance.
B.Elephants in some herds are all born without tusks.
C.Genes will be widespread in the greater population.
D.The new trait may help elephants survive the extinction.
61.In which column of a magazine can we most likely to find the text
A.Travel. B.Science. C.Puzzles. D.Well-being.

根据第一段中的“Many animals have died out in response to the pressures, but some survivors are adapting. Some animals are showing off never-before-seen behaviors, shifting their diets, and even evolving different shapes, sizes, and colors.”
根据第二段中的“The shifts can’t be avoided and are likely permanent: There's no going back to when wildlife was still completely wild. ‘There's no place anywhere on the planet in its original condition...’”
根据第五段中的“According to a 2021 DNA analysis published in the journal Science, that the elephants are born without tusks is no coincidence. After decades of being shot by ivory brokers, the leading elephants in some herds have passed down a trait that prevents the females’ prize possessions from growing in — and helps them avoid being hunted.”
根据第一段“We humans have an outsize influence on this planet, and our winged, finned, and four-legged neighbors are in their tough time. Many animals have died out in response to the pressures, but some survivors are adapting. Some animals are showing off never-before-seen behaviors, shifting their diets, and even evolving different shapes, sizes, and colors.”

Life expectancy (寿命) in Africa rose by nearly 10 years in the first two decades of this century, according to the World Health Organization. "This rise is greater than in any other region of the world during the same period," the WHO said.
In the year 2019, the average African could expect to live to be 56. However, that is still well below the global average of 64 years. WHO official Lindiwe Makubalo warned the life expectancy gains could easily be lost unless countries strengthen and make greater investments in the development of health care systems.
Makubalo said Africa has made a good start over the past two decades. On average, she said, access to essential services like basic health care improved to 46% in 2019 compared with 24% in 2000. "Other factors include improvements in reproductive, newborn and child health care, as well as advances in fighting infectious (传染的) diseases, such as TB, malaria and HIV."
While progress has been made in preventing and treating infectious diseases, the report found health services for non-infectious diseases are lagging. It says the great rise in diabetes, cancer and other non-infectious diseases could jeopardize (危害) health gains if those conditions continue to be ignored.
The report says the COVID-19 outbreak has brought about greater damages to essential health services in Africa compared to other regions of the world, which might affect healthy life expectancy.
"It is important that significant improvements are made in health services, and governments ensure quality, equal and accessible services for all," Makubalo said.
According to the report, some progress has been made in achieving universal health coverage, but it is far from enough. Health officials say one of the key measures to improve access to health services is for governments to increase their public health budgets. That, they say, would reduce the huge out-of-pocket expenses by families that are pushing millions of people into poverty.
62.What was the average life expectancy of people in Africa in 2000
A.46. B.54. C.56. D.64.
63.Which contributed to Africans5 life expectancy rise according to the text
A.Plenty of food supplies.
B.Improvement in basic health services.
C.Easier access to clean drinking water.
D.Progress in fighting against non-infectious diseases.
64.What does the underlined word "lagging" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Unique. B.Independent.
C.Informal. D.Underdeveloped.
65.What's WHO's attitude towards Africa's present situation
A.Positive. B.Uncertain. C.Concerned. D.Pessimistic.
【答案】62.A
63.B
64.D

根据第一段中的“Life expectancy (寿命) in Africa rose by nearly 10 years in the first two decades of this century本世纪头20年,非洲人的预期寿命提高了近10岁”和第二段中的“In the year 2019, the average African could expect to live to be 56. 2019年,非洲人的平均预期寿命为56岁”可推知,2000年非洲人的平均寿命为46岁,故选A。
根据最后一段中的“some progress has been made in achieving universal health coverage, but it is far from enough在实现全民健康覆盖方面取得了一些进展,但这还远远不够”,可知WHO对非洲的状况依然非常担忧,故选C。

A
When I first met professor Dalecki, I respected him greatly.
