SHARK CONSERVATION IN SOUTH AFRICA Take a two-week trip that you will never forget as a volunteer with sharks on a beautiful stretch of South Africa's coastline. Head out to sea to witness one of the world's most powerful (and most misunderstood) creatures on this inspiring project, enjoying watching them from both above and below water.
The DAY-BY-DAY schedule
Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town on a Sunday. You will be collected from the airport and spend your first night in a guest house in the city centre.
Day 2: You will be collected bright and early from the guest house and taken down to the project. The drive takes about 90 minutes. You will receive a welcome and head out to sea to witness your first sharks!
Day 3+: Most days you will be out on the boat with the sharks, depending on weather. Help out with the full range of tasks on the boats, and in conservation initiatives on land too.
Last day: On the final day of your project you will be taken back to Cape Town for your onward travel.
The price is £ 829, including the voluntary work programme with accommodations, airport transfers, one night in a guest house in Cape Town, breakfasts daily and lunches when on the boats. Your trip can be extended at a cost of £ 375 per week.
It is an amazing experience! Some volunteers planned to stay for 4 weeks, extended to 6 weeks and still didn't want to come home. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help, we're very happy to help.

There's a little restaurant in a small Alabama town where there's no cash register and no prices, just a whole lot of soul and soul food. At Drexell & Honeybee's in downtown Brewton near the Florida border, the menu changes daily, but there's always a hearty selection of Southern dishes to enjoy: fried chicken and cornbread often show up at lunchtime from Tuesday to Thursday.
What makes this place special No matter how down on their luck a person is, they never have to worry about having no money for their lunch. Once you've finished your dessert—a blueberry cobbler, perhaps —you just leave whatever you can in a private booth near the restaurant entrance, even if that's just a little thank-you note.
The owners, a husband and wife team—Freddie and Lisa Thomas-McMillan—make no profit from their restaurant. Lisa once said, "Whatever needs people have, if we can help them, we will. It's our chief mission."
100% of the donations go back into serving people food. "It's a feeling of great happiness when knowing that the customers leave with a full stomach, a full heart, and the understanding that you're loved and worthy of love." Through the years, she's run a food bank. She's opened her home to the needy. She says it may have started in the second grade when she learned a powerful lesson about sharing from a little girl who always had a better sandwich, but shared it happily with Lisa in a daily trade. Of course, the pandemic has made running a restaurant a little more tricky in recent months. "But we figured out a way to do to-go orders and keep everyone safe. It is working out very well. We feel proud to be able to do what we do, with the COVID-19 pandemic affecting so many people."

6. What does the underlined word "tricky" probably mean
A. Annoying. B. Unforgettable. C. Significant. D. Tough.

It was once a shoreline buried by enough garbage to make it invisible, thus, given the unfortunate nickname "toilet bowl". Now the Philippines' Manila Bay beach is totally different, compared with a few months ago. It happened so suddenly and extremely that it brought tears to the eyes of the local people.
The clean-up started on 27 January, when 5,000 volunteers descended on Manila Bay to remove over 45 tons of garbage, marking the beginning of a nationwide environmental campaign. But some two months before this great movement began, a quiet revolution was already underway.
During the first week of December 2018, Brooklyn-based Bounties Network collected three tons of garbage from Manila Bay over two days through a project that paid a small group of people, mostly fishermen, with a digital currency based on the Ethereum system.
For the most non-bank-using Filipino fishermen, this was a first-ever experience with a digital currency. It's one that proves decisive in enabling poor communities around the world to take up arms in the fight against humanity's waste. There are signs that this recycling-for-digital-payment industry may be just about to take off. Earlier in September 2018, Plastic Bank, a Vancouver-based company powered by IBM technology, also started a similar project. They set up a project in Naga, a town in southern Luzon, the country's largest island, building a collection point to let people exchange plastic and recyclable materials for digital payouts through a system.
That both these pioneers have chosen the Philippines as their first location is not surprising considering the country's contribution to ocean waste. A study in The Wall Street Journal in 2015 revealed that the Philippines make the third-largest amount of plastic waste into global oceans.
8. Why did people call Manila Bay "toilet bowl"
A. It looked like a huge bowl.
B. It was covered by rubbish.
C. It was characterized by special toilets.
D. It functioned as a waste treatment plant.
9. What does the underlined phrase "descended on "in paragraph 2 mean
A. Suddenly arrived at. B. Completely depended on.
C. Occasionally looked around. D. Gradually disappeared from.
10. What made poor communities willing to fight against waste
A. The benefits to their homeland.
B. The desire to make a difference.
C. The chance to escape ocean pollution.
D. The experience with digital money.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. An Online System Helps End Ocean Pollution
B. Filipinos Contribute to Ocean Protection
C. Plastic Bank Is Powerful in Recycling Ocean Waste
D. Digital Revolution Pushes the Reuse of Plastic Waste
D
Much of my work as a coach includes helping people make an important decision, such as "If I'm at a crossroads in my career, which path should I follow " "If I'm considering offers, which one should I accept "
Difficult decisions like these remind me of a comment made by Scott McNealy, once the CEO of Sun Microsystems, during a lecture while I was at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. When asked how he made decisions and responded, he said, "It's important to make good decisions. But I spend much less time and energy worrying about making the right decision and much more time and energy ensuring that any decision I make turns out right."
In fact, before we make any decisions, particularly those difficult ones, we're anxious to focus on identifying the "best" option because of the risk of being "wrong". But a side effect of that mindset(观念模式) is that we pay too much attention to the moment of choice and lose sight of everything that follows. It's what happens next that finally determines whether a given decision is "right".
Another aspect of this mindset is that our focus on making the "right" decision can easily lead to paralysis(能力的完全丧失) because the options we're choosing among are so difficult to rank in the first place. How can we definitively determine in advance what career path will be "the best", or what job offer we should accept Obviously, we can't.
Focusing on the effort after our decision not only helps us succeed, but also reminds us that we play a role in every outcome. Our control should be in our day-to-day activities rather than in our one-time decision.
12. What is the author's job
A. To help people make a vital choice.
B. To tell people to adapt to a new life.
C. To teach people to choose good careers.
D. To advise people to ask for a high salary.
13. What can we infer from Scott McNealy's words
A. He is confused to make decisions.
B. He enjoys the decision-making process.
C. He tries to make his decision right ultimately.
D. He weighs the pros and cons before making decisions.
14. Why are most people anxious about making an important decision
A. They are given too much advice.
B. They lose sight of the original aim.
C. They can't figure out their advantages.
D. They worry about the undesired result.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. How to make the right decision.
B. How to help others make a choice.
C. Stopping worrying about making the right decision.
D. Believing in yourself and choosing your favourite.

Recently, a professor of philosophy in the United States has written a book called Money and the Meaning of Life. He has discovered that how we deal with money in our day-to-day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the things he asks his students to do is keep a record of every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they often see what they really value in life.
He says our relations with others often become clearly defined when money enters the picture. You might have a wonderful friendship with somebody and you think that you are very good friends. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some money. If he does, it brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Or it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesn't. This person may say that he has a certain feeling, but if it is not carried out in the money world, there is something less real about it.
Since money is so important to us, we consider those who possess a lot of it to be very important. The author interviewed some millionaires in researching his book. Question: What is the most surprising thing you have discovered about being rich, because you are a self-made(白手起家的) man Answer: The most surprising thing is why people give me so much respect. I am nothing. I don't know much. All I am is rich.
People just have an idea of making more and more money, but what is it for How much do I need for any given purposes in my life In his book, the professor uncovered an important need in modern society: to bring back the idea that money is an instrument rather than the end. Money plays an important role in the material world, but expecting money to give happiness may be missing the meaning of life.

but
confidence
故填on/upon。
be likely to do sth. 故填to get。
这是由Not only引起的部分倒装,主语为singing,助动词应用does。故填does。
故填but。
