There's a little restaurant in a small Alabama town where there's no cash register and no prices, just a whole lot of soul and soul food. At Drexell & Honeybee's in downtown Brewton near the Florida border, the menu changes daily, but there's always a hearty selection of Southern dishes to enjoy: fried chicken and cornbread often show up at lunchtime from Tuesday to Thursday.
What makes this place special No matter how down on their luck a person is, they never have to worry about having no money for their lunch. Once you've finished your dessert—a blueberry cobbler, perhaps —you just leave whatever you can in a private booth near the restaurant entrance, even if that's just a little thank-you note.
The owners, a husband and wife team—Freddie and Lisa Thomas-McMillan—make no profit from their restaurant. Lisa once said, "Whatever needs people have, if we can help them, we will. It's our chief mission."
100% of the donations go back into serving people food. "It's a feeling of great happiness when knowing that the customers leave with a full stomach, a full heart, and the understanding that you're loved and worthy of love."
Through the years, she's run a food bank. She's opened her home to the needy. She says it may have started in the second grade when she learned a powerful lesson about sharing from a little girl who always had a better sandwich, but shared it happily with Lisa in a daily trade. Of course, the pandemic has made running a restaurant a little more tricky in recent months. "But we figured out a way to do to-go orders and keep everyone safe. It is working out very well. We feel proud to be able to do what we do, with the COVID-19 pandemic affecting so many people."
4. What characteristic does Drexell & Honeybee's have
A. It requires no payment.
B. It has no menu or waiters.
C. It serves regular food every day.
D. It has the best dessert in Alabama.
5. What does the restaurant aim to do according to Lisa
A. Advertise the cuisine. B. Feed the needy.
C. Return a girl's kindness. D. Encourage donations.
6. What does the underlined word "tricky" probably mean
A. Annoying. B. Unforgettable. C. Significant. D. Tough.
7. Which of the following best describes Lisa
A. Helpful and kind-hearted. B. Creative and ambitious.
C. Determined and positive. D. Grateful and respectable.
C
Artificial intelligence (AI) still can't see the future, but a new algorithm (算法) may come close: using nothing but written movie summaries, the AI can consistently tell which films will play well—or awfully—to critics and audiences. If the model can be further improved, it could one day help producers predict whether a movie will be a failure at the box office, before it's even made.
To test several models, researchers used plot summaries of 42,306 movies from all over the world. The models broke down the summaries into sentences and used something called sentiment (情绪) analysis to analyze each one. Sentences considered "positive", such as "Thor loves his hammer" would receive a rating closer to positive one. And sentences that were considered "negative", like "Thor gets into a fight" would be rated closer to negative one.
Generally, successful movies such as 1951's Alice in Wonderland—which scored 80% on the movie-rating website—had frequent waves in sentiment; unsuccessful ones, such as 2009's The Limits of Control, varied less. It's not important whether the films begin or end happily, the researchers say. What's important is that the sentiments change continually.
The sentiment ratings in each summary were then simplified into a single score to reflect how often the sentiment changed. The researchers tested three different methods of arriving at a final score. All three could predict fairly accurately whether a movie would be unpopular, and one method worked especially well for guessing which thrillers and comedies reviewers would hate.
The methods were not as efficient at guessing which movies would succeed, but they still predicted the results more accurately than random chance. In the future, the researchers say their methods could be bettered to predict the amount a movie could earn at the box office and help producers decide which movies to invest in. The system's fair judgment might give an advantage to less well-known writers, the researchers add. It could also potentially save the public from having to sit through films like Jaws: The Revenge, which online critics and audiences alike rate terrible.
8. How can AI help predict the future of movies
A. By testing plot models.
B. By analyzing films' sentiment.
C. By writing summaries.
D. By consulting critics and audiences.
9. What is the key factor for a successful movie according to the researchers
A. A happy ending. B. Famous movie stars.
C. A well-known producer. D. Frequent sentiment changes.
10. What benefit will the methods possibly bring
A. Helping producers invest wisely.
B. Assessing a movie's quality accurately.
C. Increasing box office earnings.
D. Providing written summaries for critics.
11. What's the researchers' attitude to the model
A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. Tolerant.

Much of my work as a coach includes helping people make an important decision, such as. "If I'm at a crossroads in my career, which path should I follow " "If I'm considering offers, which one should I accept "
Difficult decisions like these remind me of a comment made by Scott McNealy, once the CEO of Sun Microsystems, during a lecture while I was at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. When asked how he made decisions and responded, he said, "It's important to make good decisions. But I spend much less time and energy worrying about making the right decision and much more time and energy ensuring that any decision I make turns out right."
In fact, before we make any decisions, particularly those difficult ones, we're anxious to focus on identifying the "best" option because of the risk of being "wrong". But a side effect of that mindset (观念模式) is that we pay too much attention to the moment of choice and lose sight of everything that follows. It's what happens next that finally determines whether a given decision is "right".
Another aspect of this mindset is that our focus on making the "right" decision can easily lead to paralysis (能力的完全丧失) because the options we're choosing among are so difficult to rank in the first place. How can we definitively determine in advance what career path will be "the best", or what job offer we should accept Obviously, we can't.
Focusing on the effort after our decision not only helps us succeed, but also reminds us that we play a role in every outcome. Our control should be in our day-to-day activities rather than in our one-time decision.
12. What is the author's job
A. To help people make a vital choice.
B. To tell people to adapt to a new life.
C. To teach people to choose good careers.
D. To advise people to ask for a high salary.
13. What can we infer from Scott McNealy's words
A. He is confused to make decisions.
B. He enjoys the decision-making process.
C. He tries to make his decision right ultimately.
D. He weighs the pros and cons before making decisions.
14. Why are most people anxious about making an important decision
A. They are given too much advice.
B. They lose sight of the original aim.
C. They can't figure out their advantages.
D. They worry about the undesired result.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. How to make the right decision.
B. How to help others make a choice.
C. Stopping worrying about making the right decision.
D. Believing in yourself and choosing your favourite.

There was a rich couple who was holding a big party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was expensive, but they didn't mind paying a lot for it. After buying everything they needed, they called a porter (搬运工) to carry it and drop it off to their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn and he looked as if he wasn't even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for sending their goods to their home. The old porter quoted them $ 20, a price well below the market rate. Yet, the couple argued and bargained (讨价还价) with the porter and finally settled for $ 15. The porter was trying to make money for every meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy, thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter. They paid him $ 15 in advance and left after giving the porter their home address. They reached their home and two hours passed, the porter still hadn't delivered their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, "I always tell you not to trust such a person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn to feed himself for one time in a day; and you handed him everything we bought for our big party. I am sure he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him."
They both went to the market. On their way, near the market, they saw a young porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their stuff in his cart!

37.【答案】 The angry wife asked him, "Where is that old thief This is our stuff." The young porter replied, "Madam, please calm down. That poor old man has been sick since last month. He isn't able to earn money to even have a single meal of the day. He was on the way to deliver your stuff, but he, who was hungry and sick, couldn't gather the strength to go any further in this heat of the noon. He fell down and he handed me $ 15. His last words were, 'I have taken an advance for this delivery. Please take this and deliver it to this address.'”
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes and turned to his wife. "He was hungry and he was poor, but he was an honest man," the husband said. The wife felt very ashamed of what she had done. She had no courage to look at her husband's eyes. Suddenly it dawned on her that honesty has no class. Treat everyone with respect regardless of their financial and social class. It is always a good deed to give the one what he or she deserves.
