People are always curious about the secret of polyglots — people who speak a lot of languages — about how they make it. So, I decided to meet some polyglots and find that out.
Benny, from Ireland, told me that his method is to start speaking from day one. He learns a few phrases and goes to meet native speakers and starts having conversations with them right away. He doesn’t mind making even 200 mistakes a day, because that’s how he learns.
Lucas, from Brazil, had a really interesting method to learn Russian. He simply added Russian speakers as new friends online, and then opened a chat window with one of them and wrote “Hi” in Russian. And the person replied, “Hi, how are you ” Lucas copied this and put it into a text window with another person, and the person replied, “I’m fine, thank you. How are you ”Lucas copied this back to the first person, and in this way, he had two strangers have a conversation with each other without knowing about it.
I met polyglots who always start by imitating(模仿) sounds of the language and others who always learn the 500 most common words of the language, and still others who always start by reading about the grammar. If I asked a hundred different polyglots, I heard a hundred different methods of learning languages.
As I was listening to these polyglots telling me about their methods, I suddenly realized that the one thing they all have in common is that they simply found ways to enjoy the language-learning process(过程). All of these polyglots were talking about language learning as if it was great fun. So, if you’ve also tried to learn a language and you gave up, thinking it’s too difficult or you don’t have the language talent(天赋), give it another try. Maybe you’re also just one fun method away from learning that language fluently.;
1. How did the author find out the secret of polyglots
A.By watching how polyglots do.
B.By considering what polyglots do.
C.By organising a meeting for polyglots.
D.By interviewing some polyglots.;
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.Benny puts what he learns into practice at once.
B.Benny cares about making many mistakes.
C.Lucas helps strangers become friends in a conversation.
D.Lucas likes chatting with many Russian speakers at the same time.;
3. According to the author, what is the secret of learning a new language
A.The talent for language learning.
B.The enjoyment of the learning process.
C.The true-to-life learning environment.
D.The never-give-up spirit in learning a language.;
4. What is a suitable title for the text
A.The Fun of Polyglots B.What Are Polyglots
C.The Secret of Learning New Languages D.Different Methods of Learning Languages

Mosquitofish may look small, but these invasive fish are a threat. Outside of their range, they defeat other freshwater creatures, like fishes and tadpoles, and feast on their eggs. Since they have few natural predators (捕食者), their population goes unchecked as they cause damage to native wildlife.
Fortunately, scientists have now invented a new tool meant to intimidate mosquitofish: a robotic fish. “Instead of killing them one by one, we’re presenting an approach that can inform better strategies to control them,” said Giovanni Polverino, a biologist at the University of Western Australia. “We made their worst nightmare become real: a robot that scares the mosquitofish but not the other animals around it.”
The robot, which resembles a largemouth bass, one of the mosquitofish’s natural predators, was equipped with a camera to recognize mosquitofish and tadpoles. The researchers set up 12 tanks with six mosquitofish and six tadpoles in each one and allowed the creatures to adapt for a week before meeting the robot. For one hour twice a week for five weeks, each group was placed in a tank with the robot.
In the robotic fish’s presence, the mosquitofish spent more time getting together, and their swimming became more unstable. With the mosquitofish anxious and scared, the tadpoles ventured out more. These effects even lasted for weeks after the final meet with the robot. When the creatures returned to their tanks, the mosquitofish swam at a lower speed and didn’t eat as much, which are signs of anxiety. No change, on the other hand, can be detected on tadpoles.
What’s more, the mosquitofish spent so much energy living in terror that they lost weight. Males’ body shapes also changed to become more streamlined, likely so they can escape more quickly when they’re scared.
Though the study showed promising results, these robots can’t be released into the water yet. The team still needs to understand the long-term impacts on other wildlife and downstream effects on the ecosystem as a whole. But Polverino says they achieved their main goal: to prove fear can affect the survival of mosquitofish.;
5. What does the underlined word “intimidate” mean in paragraph 2
A.Poison. B.Attract. C.Frighten. D.Recognize.;
6. How did the researchers carry out the experiment
A.By comparing behaviors of two species.
B.By interviewing the inventor of the robot.
C.By collecting data from previous studies.
D.By observing the life cycle of mosquitofish.;
7. What was the change of the mosquitofish
A.They became stronger. B.They were less active.
C.They started attacking easily. D.They showed little change.;
8. What is Polverino’s attitude towards the robotic fish
A.Approving. B.Disappointed.
C.Objective. D.Skeptical.

Corals are made up of hundreds of thousands of small organisms (微生物). For the past five years, researchers in Hawaii and Australia have been engineering corals inside a lab to see if they could better resist the effects of climate change.
The team tested three methods for making corals that would be strong and healthy in nature. One is selective breeding (繁殖), aiming to produce babies with desirable characteristics. The second method subjected the corals to increasing temperatures to condition them to be able to survive in warm ocean environments. The third involved making changes to the algae (海藻) that provide corals with necessary nutrients.
The leader of the project, Kira Hughes, said all the methods proved successful in the lab. She said some scientists might worry that such methods go against the natural processes of nature. But with the planet continuing to get warmer and warmer, she does not see any better options. “We have to intervene (干预) in order to make a change for coral reefs to survive into the future,” Hughes said.
When ocean temperatures rise, corals turn white, a process called bleaching. When this happens, corals can quickly become sick and die. But for years, scientists have been observing corals that have survived bleaching. They are now centering on those healthy survivors. Those corals were used as the parents for the newly created kinds.
A recent study found bleaching to be the biggest current threat to the world’s coral reefs. Between 2009 and 2018, the world lost about 14 percent of its corals. “Corals are threatened worldwide by a lot of things, but increasing temperatures are probably the most serious,” said Crawford Drury. He is the chief scientist at Hawaii’s Coral Resilience Lab.
Madeleine van Oppen, a research scientist, told the AP there were concerns about whether the experiments could result in a loss of genetic diversity. And there were critics who said the scientists were “playing god” by making such changes to the reef. “Well, you know, humans have already intervened in the reef for a very long period of time,” van Oppen said. “Rather than editing genes or creating anything unnatural, the researchers are just attempting to repair the damage,” van Oppen added.
9. What is Kira Hughes’ opinion on engineering corals inside a lab
A.It is quite unnecessary. B.It is the best choice so far.
C.It has a slim chance of success. D.It follows the natural processes.
10. What does Crawford Drury agree with
A.The sickness of algae is the root of corals’ death.
B.Bleaching is the only threat to the world’s coral reefs.
C.Rising ocean temperatures are seriously affecting corals.
D.No corals can survive when ocean temperatures increase.
11. What is Madeleine van Oppen’s attitude towards people’s concerns and critics’ opinions
A.Disapproving. B.Favorable. C.Tolerant. D.Unclear.
12. What can be the best title for the text
A.Warm Ocean Environments Endanger Coral Reefs
B.Scientists Create Corals in Lab to Better Resist Climate Change
C.New Methods Curing Corals of Bleaching Proved Successful
D.Gene Editing Becomes a Main Approach to Saving Struggling Corals

First live class held from China’s space station
Three Chinese astronauts’ amazing voices reverberated (回响) in the ground classrooms as the schoolchildren listened with attention. Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping, and Ye Guangfu delivered the lecture and it was no ordinary course. 13 A total of 1,420 students attended the lecture from five classrooms across China.
Assisted by the other two crew members, Wang first gave a tour around, telling students how they go about their lives and work on the space station. She showed them the microwave, water machine and refrigerator in the space kitchen. 14 Wang said the water they drink is recycled, noting that there is no difference in taste between regular and recycled water.
Wang said the astronauts may look a little fat and swollen (肿胀的) as the microgravity in space can affect blood circulation. 15 She showed the students how to increase their upper limb strength with the bike by putting her hands on the pedals and floating upside down.
In a series of experiments related to water, Wang and Ye showed the students how liquids behave differently in space due to the absence of gravitational force. In a buoyancy (浮力) experiment, Wang put a table tennis ball in a glass of water. 16 However, it remained in the middle of the water. Buoyancy almost disappeared in the weightless environment.
At the end of the 60-minute class, the three astronauts tried to satisfy students’ curiosity through a real-time question and answer session. How do oxygen and carbon dioxide recycle on the space station Do stars still twinkle in space 17 “ The secrets of space and science are boundless, and the future is yours,” said Zhai, commander of the Shenzhou-13 mission.
A.It didn’t float to the surface like on Earth.
B.It is made full use of on the space station.
C.They ended the class with their best wishes.
D.She opened the mini-fridge and took out a fresh apple.
E.They use a spin bike and resistance bands to stay healthy.
F.They did experiments in the weightless environment in space.
G.It came from some 400 km above Earth on China’s space station.
