The expression “smog” originated in Britain and means a combination of “smoke” and “fog”.
Smog became a severe problem in Britain because people at that time burnt lots of fossil fuels.

How can we listen for a clearer goal
When there were numbers, we underlined the different numbers and pronounced in advance.
While listening, we look at the questions first, and circle the important words.
I prefer to listen to the radio for many times, then I will turn to the script to understand it better.
Well, Britain was one of and factories and homes used lots of coal. When burnt, the coal produced harmful emissions which created lots of smog. In London, they also called the smog a “pea soup” because it was as thick as soup.

Summary
To deal with the problem the government took some effective measures. Firstly, they carried out strict regulations, making some factories closed down or moved out of the city center. Secondly, cars and buses using new clean energy were produced, which reduced the carbon dioxide emission. Also, a lot of trees were planted on hills, fields and so on. Most importantly, it is the government’s measures that called on people to be involved in reducing the source of air pollution.
