In winter, many animals like to sleep. But their sleeps can be very long and deep. This kind of sleep is called hibernation. During this kind of sleep, their temperatures go down, and hearts beat slowly. They take very small breaths.
Animals can hibernate for part or all of the winter. It’s hard for them to find things to eat. When they go to sleep, they don’t need much food. Bears, hedgehogs (刺猬) and chipmunks (花栗鼠) go to sleep in their homes. Frogs and snakes hibernate, too. Frogs move into the earth under water to keep themselves warm. Before they go to sleep, they eat a lot to get fat. Some also keep food in their homes to eat later.
Bears are the biggest animals that hibernate. They often sleep in caves. Bears must eat a lot of things like nuts before going to sleep for a long time. They eat as much as 300 apples (that’s the same as 60 hamburgers) each day for many weeks. They can eat for 20 hours a day! Bears can go into a very deep sleep. It can last from three months to half a year. During that time they do not eat, drink or go to the toilet. A mother bear can give birth to babies during her hibernation.
Other animals sleep less. Sometimes they wake up to eat, or take a walk. Then they go to sleep again.

A 13-year-old American has made a cheap machine that can help blind people read. People who cannot see can read by using Braille-a system of small bumps (隆起物) that people touch to read the letters. Yangzhou paper cutting, with a history of 2,000 years, can be dated back to the Sui Dynasty, making Yangzhou one of the places where paper cutting first became popular.
In the Sui Dynasty, the people of Yangzhou would cut colourful paper or silk and satin(缎子)to celebrate festivals. It is said that Emperor Yang came to Yangzhou three times. In winter, the flowers and trees in the garden became dry and weak. The emperor ordered the girl servants to cut fine silk and satin into flowers and leaves and use them to decorate the trees and lakes, copying nicely the looks of spring and summer. Since then, “colorful cutting” has become a popular art in Yangzhou.
In the Tang Dynasty, the paper cutting industry was highly developed and a large amount of high-quality paper was made as presents to the Court(宫廷).
In the Qing Dynasty, because of the economic development, the people of Yangzhou became interested in wearing fine clothing, especially embroidered(刺绣的)clothing. The embroidered designs were based on paper-cuts, the most well-known of them was from Bao Jun, a paper cutting master. He won a high reputation (名声)as Magic Scissors for his wonderful cutting skills.
After the People’s Republic of China was started, the Chinese government accepted the importance of paper cutting like many other arts and skills. Imagine someone who lives in Atlanta needs to travel to Washington, D.C.for business. This is about a 10-hour drive. A flight takes about two hours. Add to that the drive to the airport, checking in and waiting at the gate. After arriving in D.C., it may take another 30 minutes to pick up your luggage and find a car — and even more time to drive to the destination (目的地). The total travel time could be four to five hours. That’s why most people would choose to fly instead of driving themselves.
However, if they could have a driverless car take them there, the choice may be different. Passengers could eat, drink, work and sleep during the 10-hour drive. They could leave whenever they want, and pack whatever they want. When they get to D.C., they don’t have to find a rental car and drive to the place by themselves. And imagine the driverless car even has a bed. So, what would you choose
As we all know, people love how quickly flights can be but hate the security checks, delays (延迟) and the risk of losing baggage. Most people don’t like to ride in driverless cars at the moment. However, it’s said that as people learn about the advantages of driverless cars, they will become more accepting of the new technology. Over time, people will feel comfortable using self-driving cars.
In our study, we showed people trips of different lengths (长度) and asked them to choose whether they would rather drive themselves, take a flight, or ride in a self-driving car. On short trips, with a five-hour drive, two-thirds of people would rather drive themselves. As trips got longer, people preferred flying, but self-driving cars were still a competing choice. On the longest trips, with a 45-hour drive, only about 10% of the people preferred driving themselves but that changed to one sixth when they had a driverless car.
So, in the future, driverless cars will be popular with people, while the future of aviation (航空) is in danger.

A.Most people would rather drive themselves for short trips.
B.For a trip that requires a 45-hour drive, few people prefer flying.
C.The longer the trip is, the more likely people choose driverless cars.
40.How does the writer feel about the future of aviation
A.Worried. B.Excited. C.Disappointed.
