Antarctica is fifth in size among the world's continents. Its land is almost completely covered by a giant ice sheet. Antarctica is a place of extremes. It is the world's southernmost continent. It is also the world's driest, windiest, coldest, iciest, and highest continent.
Based in the southern Atlantic Ocean, South Georgia covers an area of 3,756 square kilometres (1,450 square miles). The island's cold Antarctic climate sees snow covering three quarters of the island, supporting only the most resilient of tundra plants(冻原植物).

Background information
In 1914 Shackleton set out for Antarctica again, his intention was to cross the continent from one side to the other via the South Pole.
His ship, the Endurance(坚毅号), never even reached land in Antarctica, she was stuck in ice and then crushed, Shackleton and his crew faced a 19 month survival ordeal(严酷考验) before they returned to safety. They were stranded(搁浅) out on unstable sea-ice with no means to communicate with the outside world and limited equipment and food.

The rescue
We had stayed on Elephant Island for only a day, but Shackleton was already worried. He realised that many of us were too ill to survive very long without rescue. He decided to go to South Georgia Island for help. He chose five members to join him on the trip and I was one of them. I had been working on ships for my whole life and my strong navigation skills could guide us across the dangerous sea. However, to my surprise, Shackleton also picked the most difficult and unfriendly member to join us on the trip. I later learned that he did this because he wanted the group remaining on the island to stay cheerful and positive until we returned.
We sailed on very rough seas for days. The sea was so strong that it was almost impossible for me to check our position. I was only able to use my instruments three times during the trip. It scared me to think that we might sail past South Georgia Island. This would mean that we might sail into the open sea and there would be no rescue!
Unfortunately, we did sail off-course for a while, meaning we landed on the wrong side of South Georgia Island. We had to climb over the mountains to get help. The mountains looked so steep that I thought we might have to slide down them on our bottoms!
Listening text
When we arrived at the whaling station, Shackleton immediately arranged for a rescue boat to return to Elephant Island. However, due to the rough seas, we could not get near to the island. Shackleton became worried about the men. He was very anxious and began to look extremely old. We tried for three months to rescue the 22 men. Finally, we were able to reach Elephant Island and luckily find everyone still alive! They were overjoyed to see us and everyone began to cry.

Should we move on to the next one
A: OK, we need to decide on two sailors Shackleton chose for his rescue team. Let’s look at our choices.
B: So how about Tom Crean He was experienced in living in the Antarctic, and he also had many good qualities, such as energetic and strong.
A: Well, he was good at living in the Antarctic, so maybe he stayed on the island to help, but I think his strength and bravery meant that he was suitable to join the dangerous mission.
B: Agreed, so one choice is Tom Crean. OK, let’s move on to another candidate. How do you feel about Frank Worsley
A: I think he is a good choice because he was an excellent navigator.
B: I agree. The rescue team needed a good navigator. He could be our second choice.
A: All right, so let’s choose Frank Worsley and Tom Crean.
