Coming of age is that time in each of our lives when we begin to see the possibilities. The world opens up in ways that mature our vision and give us a sense of responsibility and gratefulness. Connor had just started college and loved being at that stage in his life where he could eat all the pizza he wanted, get engaged in adult conversations with his parents about the responsibility to make life better for others. Connor’s optimism was infectious. There was so much he could do, and so much he could become.
But it all ended one night when Connor was distracted while driving on a Colorado high- way. A young man,who gave off so much light, suddenly went dark.
Connor’s father, David, took it particularly hard. A father sees more than his own traits (性格) in his son; he sees greater possibilities than he achieved. Taking that hope away left David feeling at a loss. But Connor’s optimism was one of those traits passed on to him by his father. So, David got to work.
First, he established the Honor Connor Scholarship Fund to reward students who served in the community. Next, he went to work creating a research-based curriculum that educates University of Colorado Boulder students and their families about the dangers of texting while driving. It includes a very simple three part promise: Do not text or use social media while driving, speak out if riding with a driver who is distracted and encourage friends and family to drive phone-free
David now works with lecturers at various colleges and high schools, ensuring young minds understand how statistically at risk they are when they text while driving. He’s become a passionate advocate for preparing young people to drive safely and not reach for their phones while they’re at the wheel. “I just don’t want other parents to go through what I did when I lost Connor,” says David. “It’s just so preventable.”;
4. What’s the purpose of paragraph 1
A.To give the background of a funny story.
B.To explain why David chose to volunteer.
C.To set off David’s great pain of losing his son.
D.To sing high praise for Connor’s healthy growth.;
5. What happened to Connor on a Colorado highway
A.The headlight of his car went wrong.
B.He drove carelessly and died in an accident.
C.He suffered an accident for his father’s fault.
D.He died from another driver’s careless driving.;
6. From whom did Connor get the positive attitude towards life
A.His coach. B.His grandfather.
C.His teacher. D.His father.;
7. Why did David work with lecturers under a research-based curriculum
A.He wanted to take a job in a college.
B.He took the classes that Connor hadn’t finished.
C.He wanted to prevent the sad event that he had suffered.
D.He honored Connor for what he had done in the community.

We are doomed (注定遭殃): Robots will steal our jobs; Artificial intelligence (AI) will corrupt our free will; We are to be slaves to machines.
Economist Andy Haldane warns that large numbers of current labor will disappear as AI takes over. But no one predicts that AI might be good news.
Currently, there are 90,000 vacancies in social care and 24,000 in nursing. A labor shortage in British social services has risen from 7% six years ago to11% today. Education is suffering likewise.
The idea that AI, robots and 3D computer printing will make these booming industries unnecessary is silly. Clearly, new technology will mechanise (使机械化) a number of activities. As throughout history, innovation requires labor markets to change and people to retrain. The reality of economic history is that technology and trade make for short-term disruption (扰乱). But we survived and lived well as new needs and jobs appeared.
The latest phrase, the “fourth industrial revolution”, supposedly describes a new digital age. If there is to be a fourth revolution, it will be the complete opposite, a reversion(倒退) to the economy of human experience. The digital age will satisfy our life, freeing up leisure time for activities that are already in great demand. These cover everything from health, beauty, travel, food, the arts and entertainment to social work, the care of children and the elderly. These service industries essentially involve human relationships. They cannot be done by robots or machines. They are labor-intensive and they are costly, whether in the private or public sector. They are also booming. Leisure and travel is second in value only to financial services.
Economists interested in manufacturing statistics would do better to welcome AI as releasing workers into the experience economy. They should discuss how we are going to pay for them, especially those concentrated in the public sector. They should stop encouraging people into job protectionism.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.Worries that human beings are doomed.
B.Reasons why human beings are doomed
C.Warnings that human beings are doomed.
D.Doubts as to whether human beings are doomed.
9. What will happen if new technologies become popular
A.It will replace humans completely.
B.People will be slaves to machines.
C.Workers will have to upgrade skills.
D.Labor markets will remain unchanged.
10. What's the author's attitude towards the digital age
A.Optimistic. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Worried.
11. What does the author argue in the text
A.People are fascinated by robots.
B.Robots should be paid like humans.
C.Efforts must be made to protect workers.
D.It's silly to worry about robots stealing our jobs.

Cory had a quarrel with his mother for his study and left home in the morning. He had been wandering on the streets for almost a whole day, feeling so depressed and hopeless.
It was freezing cold at dusk on such a winter day. And the sky was dark. He was walking down an empty street where there were no passers-by, because people must have been at home for warmth. Cory was walking to a crossroad when suddenly he came across a little boy stuck in the middle of the road alone like him.
Cory had meant to turn a blind eye to him at first. But the boy’s situation worried him. He approached the boy, asking, “Hey! Why are you alone here Where is your mother ” “I want to find my mama and papa. Please take me home,” the boy replied, bursting into tears. Cory led him away from the crossroad. Then, he asked worriedly, “How did you come here What’s your name ”
“I’m Simon. I was playing with my dog. The dog ran away, and I ran after him for a long distance. But when I wanted to go back home, I lost my way,” cried the boy. Feeling pity for the boy, Cory made up his mind to help the boy. He couldn’t have the little boy staying here alone.
Attempting to look for his home, Cory took the little boy to different neighborhoods. But things didn’t go that smoothly as he had expected. It was getting darker and darker, and Cory thought he had to help Simon find his home. He knocked on every door, but without luck. Worn out and starving, he realized Simon must be very hungry. He offered him the chocolate he had bought with his rest money. It began to snow and he removed his coat and put it around Simon. Luckily, there was still a bakery store with the door open. He borrowed a phone to call the police station.

After a while, a police car pulled up and Cory waved to it with excitement. Two policemen came out of the police car and Cory couldn’t wait to explain what had happened to Simon. Then, the policemen checked for any missing person’s report without any delay. Meanwhile, they drove the two of them around the nearby neighborhood one by one to search for Simon’s home. Finally, they successfully contacted the little boy’s parents. Cory was more than glad to see Simon s reunion with his parents.
Seeing the reunion of Simon and his parents, Cory was deeply touched. He thought of his own parents, the warm home and his mother’s delicious supper. He thought his parents must have been as worried as Simon’s and they must have been anxiously searching everywhere for their son right now. The more he thought about it, the more guilty he felt for what he had done to his mother. All his anger died away in an instant and he rushed in the direction of his home.
