A Cliff Dwelling
There sandy seems the golden sky
And golden seems the sandy plain.
No habitation meets the eye
Unless in the horizon rim,
Some halfway up the limestone wall,
That spot of black is not a stain
Or shadow, but a cavern hole,
Where someone used to climb and crawl
To rest from his besetting fears.
I see the callus on his soul
The disappearing last of him
And of his race starvation slim,
Oh years ago - ten thousand years.

Answer the questions.
2. What is the main idea of The Road Not Taken
Robert Frost’s central idea in his poem “Road Not Taken” is that by choosing a path that most people don’t, a man can make a big difference in his life. In this poem, a man came to a place where he had to make a choice between two roads.
3. What is the meaning of The Road Not Taken
The meaning of the poem is about a person having to choose between two roads. “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” and the speaker is torn between which road is the best choice. It is in the autumn of the speaker’s life. He has to choose which road to travel.
1. What is the form of the road not taken
The Road Not Taken consists of four stanzas of five lines. The rhyme scheme is ABAAB; the rhymes are strict and masculine, with the notable exception of the last line (we do not usually stress the -ence of difference). There are four stressed syllables per line, varying on an iambic tetrameter base.
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions.
2. What are the Literary Devices in The Road Not Taken
Metaphor: There are many metaphors in the poem like road, fork in the road and yellowwoods. The road in the poem is the metaphor of life, while the fork on the road metaphorically represents the choices we make to determine the course of our lives. Similarly, yellow woods are the metaphor of making decisions during the hard times of a person’s life. These metaphors used in this poem emphasize the importance of different decisions we make in different situations and their impacts on our lives.
Imagery: Imagery is used to make the readers feel things through their five senses. The poet has used images of the sense of sights such as leaves, yellowwoods and these images help readers to actually perceive things they are reading. The image of the road helps readers to visualize the road providing a navigation route to the traveler.
Simile: A simile is a device used to compare things with familiar things to let the readers know it easily. There is one simile used in the second stanza such as “as just as fair”. It shows how the poet has linked the road less taken to the easy way through life.
Assonance: Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds such as the sound of /a/ and /o/ in quick succession in “though as far that the passing” and in “Somewhere ages and ages hence.”
Consonance: Consonance is the repetition of consonant sounds such as /d/ in “two roads diverging in a yellow wood” and /t/ sound in “though as far as the passing there.”
Personification: Robert Frost has personified road in
the third line of the second stanza. Here, it is stated “Because it was grassy and wanted wear” as if the road is human, and that it wants to wear and tear.
Parallelism: Parallelism is the use of a source of words, phrases or sentences that have similar grammatical forms. Frost has used Parallelism in the poem such as.

Symbolism is the use of an object to represent an abstract idea. For example, the rose could represent love and affection, and the rainbow could symbolize hope. It allows the poet to express a certain mood or emotion in a more subtle way, as opposed to stating it directly.
象征手法symbolism是文学创作中的表现方法。根据事物间的联系,借助人或物的具体形象表现抽象概念、思想和情感。
The Road Not Taken是美国诗人Robert Frost最著名的作品之一。诗歌语言质朴,在构思上非常巧妙,把深刻的思考和哲理寓于平淡无奇的内容和简洁朴实的诗句之中。Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, / And sorry I could not travel both两条路各奔一方象征了在人生中所面临的选择。面对选择我们难免变得犹豫不决,但终究要做出抉择。形象地描绘出一个人面临选择时的心态,从而引发深深的思考。

3. What is the most difficult choice you have ever had to make
What did you choose to do
The biggest decision I have ever made was to quit my last job and move to Denver.
I have a lot of friends in Denver, which made a choice a bit easier, but leaving my hometown to explore other opportunities was certainly a major decision in my life.
I decided, despite my fears, to move forward and make the location change. I actively looked for a new job opportunity and leveraged my existing network to make valuable new connections.
Today, I have zero regrets, as I love this city. It's my home for good!
4. What effect will the poem have on you when you face decisions in the future Give your reasons.
Throughout our lives we are faced with a number of important decisions, decisions that determine an unseen future. The choices, though often virtually identical, lead to different destinies and often leave us asking “what if ” There are not always signs telling us the way to go or the choice to make; we must find out what lies ahead for ourselves.
5. In What different ways do the two reading passages in this
unit improve your understanding of the choices you make
and how they impact your future
I feel the theme of the poem, deepen my understanding of the meaning of the theme of the unit, and gradually form a positive attitude towards life that never gets lost in confusion and never stagnates in moving forward. At the same time, I gradually learn to choose and make decisions, and have the excellent qualities of being brave to take responsibility and facing challenges.
Read another interpretation of the poem and prepare a report comparing it with the one in the passage.
The Road Not Taken is one of America’s best-loved poems, and I think it is a pity that it is generally misunderstood as a call for facing the future without regret.
Robert
To me, it is really about accepting the consequences of our choices many years in the future, when it is too late to change them. The two roads in the wood were “really about the same”, so the cause of any indecision is a fear of regret. It is, however, acceptable to feel regretful, because it serves as a reminder to live life to the full.
Discuss the two interpretations from the following aspects. Do further research if necessary.
What points do the two interpretations share
The two interpretations share the following points: the poem The Road Not Taken is one of America’s most famous or best-loved poems, and it is about choice.
What are the major differences between the two interpretations
The major differences between the two interpretations are: the one in the passage interprets the poem as a call for facing the future without regret, while the second interpretation maintains that the poem is really about accepting the consequences of our choices many years in the future, when it is too late to change them.
Which interpretation seems more convincing to you Why
I think the first one. That’s because we always have choices in life. Sometimes, there are more than two choices for us to make. But the correct answer is only one. So we have to choose from them whether the choice is right or not.
