We can see from the first round that the fish is not easy to conquer so that(以至于) the battle must be a tough(adj. 艰难的) journey. There is still a long way to go before Santiago eventually defeats the fish.
No, he didn’t. From his words we can see that he was sure of the fact that the fish was bound to die, indicating that the old man was still confident of winning.
It’s indicates that Santiago will never give up until the last moment. It is a way to further convince himself of the final victory.

Writing Style : short, simple, repeated
If a writer of prose knows enough about what he is writing about he may omit things that he knows and the reader, if the writer is writing truly enough, will have a feeling of those things as strongly as though the writer had stated them. The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one-eighth of it being above water.

Discussion

Step
According to learn the excerpt of The Old Man and the Sea, how do you understand this sentence
“Man not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”
一个人并不是生来要给打败的,你尽可以毁灭他,但永远无法击败他。
I think this sentence shows the power of strong will. Even if you lose a physical battle, you can still win a mental battle. As long as you don’t give in mentally (you are not “defeated”), you can still be proud of yourself, even though your body is “destroyed”.
Thank you !
