pick up (=pick up the phone) 接电话 = answer the phone
pick up 还有以下含义:

区分 when 与while
(1) “当…的时候”,如后面连接的动词为进行时态,则多用while。而when通常与瞬间性动词连用。
(2) 若while前后的动词都是进行时态,while可译为“与此同时”
e.g. 我在看书,与此同时我的哥哥在画画。

(3) 当while前后的句子描述的情况相对或相反,while可译为“而”,while更强调并列的对比而非转折。
e.g. 我很外向,而我的姐姐很文静。
