It was four weeks before New Year, and our youth group wanted to do something together as a New Year project for our community. The concept was great, but none of us seventeen year olds had any idea what to do.
"Maybe we could have a food drive to help the homeless," John suggested at our Sunday night meeting. "But we have done that many times," answered Brian with a frown.
Ten minutes passed without any proposal good enough to win our hearts. Finally I decided to speak. "Why don't we think about our project for a few days and then come back with three or four suggestions we can vote on " Everyone agreed to wait a week before deciding.
I knew time was running out to get something going before New Year, but I had no clue what we should do. During the following week, one idea after another ran through my mind, but I was still indecisive.
Thursday after school, I wandered into the kitchen as my dad prepared for dinner. Sensing my uneasiness, he asked what troubled me without even looking up. "Well…it…" I let out a long breath. "Our youth group wants to do something for New Year, but we don't know what to do…"
"Hmm." My dad spoke out loud. "There's a seniors' home I've worked with close to St. Joseph's Hospital. The residents don't get out much around New Year with the snow and ice. It might be an idea to take them out to see the New Year lights around here. "
I stood still for a few moments thinking of all the spectacular (绚丽的) New Year light displays in our neighborhood. To be honest, I never thought about that, but it might just work.

His aunt would retire, and he thought a bouquet (花束) would be a great gift.
"Hello, could you please make me a bouquet of roses " Jim said as he approached the girl.
The girl didn't raise her head and just stared at the same spot on the ground. "I'm Cassy. Thank you for buying flowers from me," she said. "Could you please select the flowers by yourself and give them to me I will tie them together for you. I can't see. "
"Oh, I'm sorry," Jim said as he picked the flowers and handed them to her. Within several seconds, the girl made a lovely bouquet for Jim.
"Here," she said, holding the bouquet. "That'll be $5."
"Thanks. They're beautiful," Jim said and walked away after placing the money in the hat beside Cassy.
The next day, Jim went to work and he decided to have a quick talk with Cassy on the way. However, he didn't see Cassy where she used to be that morning. He thought she might be late and decided to meet her the next day, but she didn't show up for the next few days in a row (连续地).

60-year-old Richard Olsen had retired from his work. He was very interested in adventure and hunting. This time he hunted on a sparsely (稀少地) populated land. In the cold winter, he tried a new place and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip. He trekked (艰苦跋涉) more than half a mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.
Eyes fixed on the horizon in expectation of another rabbit, Richard stepped on the thin snow on a canal (沟渠). Suddenly, the snow collapsed (倒塌) and he dropped four feet to the bottom.
Trapped in the canal, Richard couldn't move at all, his left leg badly hurt. Using his shotgun as a crutch (拐杖), he spent an hour climbing a half canal but slipped and slid back down when he was partly up. This time, one of his feet got stuck between two rocks. Richard told himself that if he didn't get himself out of that canal, he wasn't going to have a very good night.
Richard worked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. Richard immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred about 2 p. m. , and it was nearing 5 p. m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.
Richard focused on crawling (爬) to safety. Even with his gun supporting him, hopping (单足跳跃) was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was determined and sure that he must hold on. He was tired out and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped overnight, and snow melted and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb (失去知觉的).

It was a hot summer day. My dad and I were getting ready to go out for a ride on the boat. That's when the phone call came, the call that made the bright, beautiful day a cold, dark, gloomy one.
I had just put on my suit, shorts, and tank top, and packed my bag with sunscreen and everything else I would need for that day. I ran into my parents' room to find dad. When I saw him on the phone, he was crying. I'd never seen my dad cry before. What possibly could have happened
"Max, I'm so sorry," I heard him say. That's when it hit me. I knew that Suzie had died.
Max has been my dad's best friend for years. Suzie, his daughter, had a rare disease that mainly affected her body. Her brain was OK. She knew what was going on; she knew that she had problems and was different than other kids. Once she told her dad that she wished she could die and be born in a different body. Yet although she couldn't live a normal life, she was still happy.
When Suzie and I were little, we spent quite a bit of time together. As we grew up, we grew apart. She lived in New York, and I lived in Midwest. When Suzie was ten she had to live in hospital. I sent her a Beanie Baby and she sent one back to me. About eight months before she died, Max gave us her number at the hospital and we talked at least twice a week until the end. Grady and his family go camping every summer. As it was becoming hotter, here came the camping time.
Having planned the camp long, the family finally decided the destination —the Great National Forest. With food, necessity and cookers loadted onto the car, the family squeezed into the car. The car door closed; heat was shut outside.
In the car, Jared, Grady's younger brother was playing with a toy dinosaur, making great noise. Grady's mother talked excitedly with his father. On settling in the car, Grady put on the earphone and turned on the music. He neither wanted to join his brother nor join in any talk. After what seemed to be hours, the car stopped where they headed. Grady threw down his backpack and slammed the door.
" This will be a long week," he said unhappily to no one in particular. He looked around the campground. Hundreds of tall and green fur trees, some as tall as church towers, covered the mountainside like a green carpet. The sun would be setting soon. Grady thought maybe the heat wouldn't be unbearable. But actually now in the mountain the hot sickness of July was closely attached to him.
Grady hated camping, but it was something his family stuck to every summer. His father liked cooking over an open fire, telling stories about how to survive things like bear attacks and bites of bees. His mother and Jared liked to hike and take pictures of animals. Jared had a collection of pictures that he had pinned to the wars in his half of their room. Grady thought they were just scary and proof that Jared was a strange kid.
They set up camp— two tents, one for his parents and one for himself and Jared. While everyone else started preparing dinner, Grady, looking for some place to cool down, set off for the nearby stream, which was deep enough to swim in.

I moved to a new place. After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom told me she had to work. I was still hoping she'd meet me after the bell.
I opened the door. I was hungry. I wandered into the kitchen, tearing tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.
"Benjamin!" cried Mom from the doorway. I didn't hear her come in. "What just broke " she asked, bending to pick up the shards (碎片). In her hands, I recognized the pieces. It was Grandma's bowl, the one Mom put out for special occasions.
"Why couldn't you have waited for me to unpack I couldn't believe you broke this," she said.
Words burst from my mouth and spilled across the room. "Well, I can't believe we have to live here now! I can't believe I have to switch schools when there are only a few weeks left before summer!" I ran into my room, shutting the door behind me violently.
The broom (扫帚) swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom's bedroom door closed behind her. I stole out into the kitchen and picked out the shards in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together.
"I' m sorry I yelled," said Mom, as she opened her door. "Please just throw out the pieces. We can't make a fresh start with broken things."
As I wandered down the hall, Mr. Sato, my neighbor, was emptying his garbage.
"Are you sure you want to throw that out " he asked, gesturing towards the bowl. "It's broken," I whispered. "This is all my fault."
"Things break, Benjamin. That isn't anyone's fault. Besides, this is a simple repair.
Come. I'll show you." Taking a thin knife, Mr. Sato started to repair the bowl. After a long time, Mr. Sato said to me, "This needs to dry. Come back on Saturday, and we will finish it."

The Comeback
Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room at the ice-skating rink(溜冰场). She had not been skating in any competition since her left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. She knew that today was a very important day in her comeback.
"If I can win today," she thought, "I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics."
Laurie was told that she had a tough competition this year, and a girl from Connecticut named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. "She is the one you have to beat this year," the coach said.
Minutes later, the door opened and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her own age. The young woman dumped some of her belongings onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a sound.
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. "So this is my competitor," thought Laurie, "Because of her, I may lose tonight."
"This costume(服装) was my mom's idea," Jinny started the conversation, looking down at her red, white, and blue skating dress. " looks like a flag."
Laurie couldn't keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny's skating bag. "Something fell out of your bag," Laurie said.
Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
"Jinny," called someone, "You'd better give the tape of your music to the sound engineer right away."
"I thought I gave him my music tape an hour ago," said Jinny, "Tell him it's the green box with my initials written in white in the right-hand corner."
"He said you never gave it to him. and he's getting angry."
"Then I don't know what I did with it," said Jinny, hurrying out.
Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table.
Paragraph 2:
Feeling relaxed, Laurie skated quickly to the center of the rink after the announcer finally called her name.

【答案】 Next Sunday evening, our youth group met. My fellows put forward several suggestions and I also contributed Dad's idea for discussion. To my pleasant surprise, the New Year lights tour won their hearts. We called the seniors' home and they were thrilled about our proposal. The following weeks, we were busy lining up everything for the tour, including the bus to drive the seniors along the planned route.
On New Year's Day, the bus we rented arrived at the seniors' home in the snow. Despite the cold, the snow added a magical white blanket to the neighborhood. All residents slowly found seats on the bus and the tour began. The spectacular light displays lit up their faces and I even saw some eyes filling up. Returning to the seniors' home, they couldn't stop talking about all they'd seen and thanked us again and again. Looking at their excited and grateful faces, we'd never felt warmer.

His aunt would retire, and he thought a bouquet (花束) would be a great gift.
"Hello, could you please make me a bouquet of roses " Jim said as he approached the girl.

"Oh, I'm sorry," Jim said as he picked the flowers and handed them to her. Within several seconds, the girl made a lovely bouquet for Jim.

"Thanks. They're beautiful," Jim said and walked away after placing the money in the hat beside Cassy.

Seconds seemed to stretch into hours whizzing speeding by and the daylight fading out, a wave of frustration and helplessness gradually swallowed him up.
However, gleams of daylight remained-Richard saw the seventh car.
Suzie was always so excited to talk to us and wanted to know every detail about my life. She wanted to know everything I did and everything I ate. In a way, she lived through me.

Paragraph 2:
Turning around, he saw an angry bear moving swiftly towards him. Shocked and dumb, Grady was rooted to the ground for seconds, and then dashed to the camp desperately, shouting for help in the meantime. Fortunately, Grady's father heard the shout and came to his assistance. To their surprise, realizing the danger was away, the furry giant stopped chasing and returned to the stream, picking up her baby and holding it in her in arms tightly.

Saturday morning, I stole out early and knocked on the Sato's door.
I was a little nervous to show Mom the bowl, but that night I brought it into her room.
【答案】范文:
Saturday morning, I stole out early and knocked on the Satos' door. "Now comes my favorite part, "said Mr. Sato. He offered me a tiny brush. "Take your time, and fill in the crack lines." At first my hand was shaking, but then I painted with smooth strokes. When I finished, the bowl looked completely different. Instead of the cracks blending in and disappearing, now you could see exactly where it was broken."This bowl has another layer to its history--it has been broken, repaired, and is stronger because of it," said Mr. Sato. I took the bowl home quietly.
I was a little nervous to show Mom the bowl, but that night I brought it into her room. She ran her fingertip over the golden veins. "Mr. Sato helped me fix it,"I said. "It's so beautiful," she replied." A new beginning." I sat on the edge of her bed, and Mom reached out to me. Our hands joined with crisscrossed fingers. Maybe it finally did feel like a fresh start. The bowl was stronger like this too. It was the cracks that were holding it together.

【答案】范文:
Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table. She pulled it out and saw the white Initials J.J, in the top right-hand comer. "It's Jinny's music tape!" She exclaimed. Laurie's heart started beating fast. "All I'd have to do is forget that I found this," she thought. "If Jinny doesn't have her music, she might as well not skate. And then I would win." Laurie shivered slightly as she thought about this. Then she wondered,"Does winning mean so much to me that I'd be willing to cheat for it " She walked to the door and called Jinny loudly.
Feeling relaxed, Laurie skated quickly to the center of the rink after the announcer finally called her name. The music filled the stadium and she skated gracefully and beautifully. Her left knee was fine and she felt herself gliding on the ice. The audience applauded from time to time, enthusiastically supporting her in her comeback. When she finished, her coach ran up to her and hugged her. "You did it, Laurie!" She said. Laurie smiled and thought about Jinny's music tape. "No one will ever know how close I really came to losing." She said softly to herself.
