It was a rainy day and I was walking down the street feeling comfortable and happy. I wanted to do something kind for someone else without any reason and purpose, almost as if I was just trying to spread the abundance (充足) of love I was receiving. It was then that I saw a teenage girl dressed in tattered clothes, getting soaked(湿透). She wasn't wearing any shoes or socks. The rain wet her skin through the holes in her clothes and she was making her way through the garbage, trying to find something that would be of use to her.
I walked towards her and told her to wait for me there while I ran home to get her something. On getting home, I took off my shoes, which I really loved, wrapped them up in a plastic cover and ran to give them to the teenage girl on the street.
The girl looked surprised as if she was not used to this kind of kindness. She thanked me in a trembling (颤抖的) voice.
A famous musician who lives down the street corner stopped his car and smiled when he saw what happened. The two watchmen who saw me do this talked and gave me friendly looks.
Although I had to wear my dad's shoes, I was satisfied even if they were a bit large for my feet, because I knew the girl would walk comfortably wearing the shoes. That day I learned that letting go off the little things we own can be a big help to others.

根据第一段中的“It was then that I saw a teenage girl dressed in tattered clothes, getting soaked(湿透). She wasn't wearing any shoes or socks. The rain wet her skin through the holes in her clothes”可知,作者看到了一个穿着tattered衣服的女孩,衣服湿透了。 结合句意,尤其是可any shoes or socks和the holes推测划线词的意思是"破旧的"。故选A。
根据第二段中的“On getting home, I took off my shoes, which I really loved, wrapped them up in a plastic cover and ran to give them to the teenage girl on the street. ”一到家,我就脱下我非常喜爱的鞋,然后用塑料包裹好,跑到街上把它们拿给那个女孩)可知,作者非常有爱心,把自己喜欢的东西送给了需要的人。故选D。
3.考查推理判断。根据第四段中的“A famous musician who lives down the street corner stopped his car and smiled when he saw what happened. The two watchmen who saw me do this talked and gave me friendly looks.”
根据最后一段中的“That day I learned that letting go off the little things we own can be a big help to others.”
Scientists in Michigan have developed a forest fire alarm system. It can not only monitor when a fire begins but also call for help. This battery-free device hangs in a tree and gains all the energy it needs from the natural swinging of branches. Such a sensor (传感器) could watch the woods for a decade without humans' attention.
"For forest fire monitoring, you don't need high amounts of energy," says Cao Changyong, an engineer at Michigan State University, who led the team behind the new device. It recharges itself about every 10 minutes with just enough power to take a measurement. That's plenty of time, Cao says, "to produce enough energy."
There's an obvious need for fast monitoring of faraway forests. Every year, fires burn millions of acres in the United States. Early findings also can save lives. Right now, forest fires are found from satellites or fire towers. Neither, Cao says, is as fast or low-cost as tree-hanging sensors would be.
Cao's group faced some challenges in creating its new sensors. For example, these have to produce enough power to check the forest and send out a signal and that power source has to be used for longer time. To deal with the problems, they decided to change mechanical motion (机械运动) into electricity. The device to do this is known as a TENG short for triboelectric nanogenerator. Scientists have explored TENGS as one way to gain energy from the natural world, including harvesting energy from effects on tabletops, falling rain-even keyboards. The new TENG for forest use produces a current (电流) when a tree branch swings. That current is small, yet enough to power a thermometer (温度计) to monitor the temperature changes signaling fire.
Cao says his team's new model has not yet been tested over long time periods in the real world, but the device is ready. All he needs now is the money to build more of them.
5.What is special about Cao's sensor
A.It can save lives. B.It is shaped like a branch.
C.It is self-powered. D.It keeps power for about a day.
6.Which of the following is the benefit of the fire alarm system
A.Recharging every minute. B.Monitoring the forest fires.
C.Measuring at a slow speed. D.Working for a longer time.
7.What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 4 refer to
A.Sending out a signal when a fire breaks out.
B.Producing enough power to check the forest.
C.Turning mechanical energy into electrical power.
D.Monitoring the temperature changes signaling a fire.
8.What problem is Cao's new model facing for its long-time test
A.It doesn't work. B.It is of no use in fact.
C.It needs enough money. D.It isn't easily performed.
【答案】5.C
6.B
7.C
8.C
It recharges itself about every 10 minutes with just enough power to take a measurement."
Right now, forest fires are found from satellites or fire towers. Neither, Cao says, is as fast or low-cost as tree-hanging sensors would be."
To deal with the problems, they decided to change mechanical motion into electricity."
Cao says his team's new model has not yet been tested over long time periods in the real world, but the device is ready. All he needs now is the money to build more of them."Cao说,他的团队的新模型还没有在现实世界中经过长时间的测试,但设备已经准备好了。

Do you have cold feet in winter But now if you wear a pair of UGG boots, you won't be troubled by that.
UGG means Australian Sheepskin Boots. UGG boots became popular among shearers (剪羊毛的人) in the 1920s.The shearers sheared the sheep and grabbed a bit of dead sheep, wrapped it around their feet and called them "Ugly Boots". Good old Australian slang shortened Shearers Ugly Boots to UGG boots. Thus UGG Boots date back as far as the 1920s in Australia.
UGG boots became so popular because of the amazing amount of comfort they bring to the feet. The sheepskin is made incredibly soft so the boots are warm and comfortable. UGG boots felt more like socks than shoes, yet they are tough enough for outdoor wear.
Our UGG boots are handmade with Australian sheepskin of the highest quality by our factory of UGG Original Pty Ltd.
We can wear UGG boots in cold weather or summer. In cold weather, the thick wool of UGG boots provides a preventing layer of warmth by trapping your body heat. In the heat of summer, the natural fibres of the wool will actually cool your feet by absorbing sweat. UGG boots are made to be worn barefoot to maximize the cushioning and warmth provided by the sheepskin.

UGG boots became popular among shearers (剪羊毛的人) in the 1920s.The shearers sheared the sheep and grabbed a bit of dead sheep, wrapped it around their feet and called them‘Ugly Boots’. Good old Australian slang shortened Shearers Ugly Boots to UGG boots.”UGG的意思是澳大利亚羊皮靴。 故选A。
根据第三段中的“UGG boots became so popular because of the amazing amount of comfort they bring to the feet. The sheepskin is made incredibly soft so the boots are warm and comfortable.”
根据最后一段中的“Why not pick up your phone and contact us right now at www..au. ”为什么不现在就拿起你的电话,在www..au.上联系我们呢?,可知这篇文章的目的是为UGG靴子做广告。故选B。
4. 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
If history is "a race between education and catastrophe", education seemed until recently to be winning. In 1950 only about half of adults globally had any schooling; now at least 85% do. Between 2000 and 2018, the proportion(比例)of school-age children who were not enrolled(使加入)in classes fell from 26% to 17%. But the rapid rise in attendance masked an ugly truth: many pupils were spending years behind desks but learning almost nothing. In 2019 the World Bank started keeping count of the number of children who still cannot read by the time they finish primary school. It found that less than half of ten-year-olds in developing countries could read and understand a simple story.
Then the pandemic struck and millions of pupils were locked out of school. It should be noted that globally, the harm that school closures have done to children has vastly outweighed any benefits they may have had for public health. The World Bank says the share of ten-year-olds in middle-and low-income countries who cannot read and understand a simple story has risen from 57% in 2019 to roughly 70%. If they lack such elementary skills, they will struggle to earn a good living.
This should be seen for what it is: a global emergency. Nearly every problem that confronts humanity can be alleviated by good schooling. Better-educated people are more likely to work out a cleaner energy source, a cure for malaria or a smarter town plan. If the damage the pandemic has done to education is not reversed(逆转), all these goals will be harder to reach.
Politicians talk endlessly about the importance of schooling, but words are cheap and a fit-for-purpose education system is not. Spending has risen modestly in recent decades but fell in many countries during the pandemic. Apart from the money, the education system itself is in urgent need of change: Testing is a mess, leading governments to overestimate levels of literacy. New teachers have been hired but not trained properly. Teachers, who have come through the same education systems they are supposed to be improving, often struggle to teach.
The same energy that was once poured into building schools and filling up classrooms should now be used to improve the lessons that take place within them. No more children should stumble(蹒跚而行)through their school days without learning to read or add up.
12.What did the World Bank find out about pupils in 2019
A.They could hardly concentrate in class.
B.Many of them had to drop out of school.
C.They had difficulty finishing primary school.
D.Many of them failed to acquire necessary knowledge.
13.What does the author say about school closures
A.They could well protect children's health.
B.They made matters worse for children.
C.They produced unexpected benefits for public health.
D.They made it hard for teachers to make a good living.
14.What does the underlined word "alleviated" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.reduced B.caused C.described D.strengthened
15.What change needs to be made to the current education system
A.Primary schools should only hire experienced teachers.
B.Teachers should be motivated to cooperate with each other.
C.A reliable system should be created to test pupils' knowledge and ability.
D.Primary schools should spend more on improving facilities.
【答案】12.D
13.B
14.A
15.C
根据第一段最后两句“In 2019 the World Bank started keeping count of the number of children who still cannot read by the time they finish primary school. It found that less than half of ten-year-olds in developing countries could read and understand a simple story.”2019年,世界银行开始统计小学毕业时仍不能阅读的儿童人数。
根据第二段“Then the pandemic struck and millions of pupils were locked out of school. It should be noted that globally, the harm that school closures have done to children has vastly outweighed any benefits they may have had for public health. ”随后新冠疫情爆发,数百万学生被学校拒之门外。应该指出的是,在全球范围内,学校关闭对儿童造成的伤害远远超过了他们对公共健康可能带来的任何好处。以及第一段世界银行的统计结果可知,作者认为疫情导致学校关闭让孩子们的处境变得更糟。故选B。
14.考查词义猜测。根据第三段中划线词所在句子后面的内容“Better-educated people are more likely to work out a cleaner energy source, a cure for malaria or a smarter town plan. If the damage the pandemic has done to education is not reversed(逆转), all these goals will be harder to reach.” 由此可知,划线词所在句“Nearly every problem that confronts humanity can be alleviated by good schooling.(人类面临的几乎所有问题都可以通过良好的学校教育得到alleviated。)” 故选A。
根据第四段“Apart from the money, the education system itself is in urgent need of change: Testing is a mess, leading governments to overestimate levels of literacy. New teachers have been hired but not trained properly. Teachers, who have come through the same education systems they are supposed to be improving, often struggle to teach.”
Twenty years ago, German-born Kathrin von Rechenberg left Paris, France, where she used to work for some luxury brands. She didn't leave to make a fortune. In search of a particular kind of material called fragrant cloud organza(香云纱), she came to Shunde, a small city in South China's Guangdong Province.
Rechenberg has a passion for making clothes at a very young age. When she was 11, she made her first dress by herself. Then she went to a specialized school for three years to improve her skills in clothes making. After earning the first prize in a clothesmaking competition in Germany, she won a full scholarship from the top haute couture(高级女式时装)school in Paris. There, she worked for famous haute couture houses as an honor graduate.
But instead of following the steps of some famous designers in haute couture houses, she simply quit her job, and made her way to China to explore the beauty of fragrant cloud organza. As a result, she created her own brand, Rechenberg Art Couture, and found a way to express her own philosophy in making clothes.
Rechenberg learned that the production of the material involves more than 30 intervals of dyeing(染色)and natural drying at each interval, while the last step is to cover the fabrics with mud so that the latter's rich iron elements can react with the tannic acid and silk fiber to change the colors. After the dyeing, the fabrics must stand for years before the entire process is completed. However, such materials nourished (滋养) by the natural soil, water, and sunshine have a unique energy and become fabrics that can "breathe".
She draws inspiration from geometric lines and architectural shapes and reduces unnecessary tailoring to preserve the original art design as much as possible. For Rechenberg, a perfect cut should be precise and smooth, just like Chinese calligraphy, which is often finished at one stretch. In addition, she always avoids complicated decorations. "Making clothes is about taking off things unnecessary, and you have more strength when it is kept simple, "she said.
In 2020, Rechenberg was awarded the title of friendship ambassador of China's textile intangible cultural heritage. Meanwhile, her own brand has become increasingly popular.
16.Why did Rechenberg come to Shunde
A.To earn fame and fortune.
B.To seek for a special material.
C.To share her work experience.
D.To learn new skills in making clothes.
17.What words could best describe Rechenberg
A.Confident and committed. B.Curious and considerate.
C.Ambitious and determined. D.Talented and elegant.
18.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about fragrant cloud organza
A.Its high quality. B.Its unique color.
C.Its storage conditions. D.Its production process.
19.Why is Chinese calligraphy mentioned in paragraph 5
A.To stress the importance of decorating clothes.
B.To show the inspiration for Rechenberg's clothes designing.
C.To explain Rechenberg's concept of clothes tailoring.
D.To state the impact of traditional culture on making fabrics.
【答案】16.B
17.C
18.D
19.C
根据文章第一段最后一句“In search of a particular kind of material called fragrant cloud organza(香云纱), she came to Shunde, a small city in South China's Guangdong Province.”
根据文章第三段“But instead of following the steps of some famous designers in haute couture houses, she simply quit her job, and made her way to China to explore the beauty of fragrant cloud organza.”
根据第四段“Rechenberg learned that the production of the material involves more than 30 intervals of dyeing(染色)and natural drying at each interval, while the last step is to cover the fabrics with mud so that the latter's rich iron elements can react with the tannic acid and silk fiber to change the colors. ”Rechenberg了解到,这种材料的生产需要30多个时间间隔的染色而且每一次间隔都要自然干燥,而最后一步是用泥浆覆盖织物,使织物富含的铁元素与鞣酸和丝绸纤维反应,从而改变颜色。可知,本段具体介绍了香云纱这种材料的生产过程。故选D。
19.考查推理判断。根据第五段中的“For Rechenberg, a perfect cut should be precise and smooth, just like Chinese caligraphy, which is often finished at one stretch.”
There's no shortage of health food trends on TikTok, but which ones are actually sensible And should you skip any of them altogether We asked registered dietitian Vanessa Rissetto, and here's what you need to know.
Emily Mariko's Salmon Bowl
Made with rice, baked salmon, soy sauce and spicy mayo—and to be clear, there are a lot of different variations of it online—this passes Rissetto's test because it's healthy, fast, easy and has good flavor.

"lettuce water" for better sleep probably won't cure your sleep disorder—and it probably doesn't taste great, either.
"This is not a thing. There's no evidence to prove it, "Rissetto said. "Instead, steep a banana peel in boiling water to help aid with sleep. "
Nature's Cereal
As Rissetto points out, it's basically a fruit smoothie bowl.
"I am all for having berries and coconut water, "she said." Nutrition-wise, this has lots of vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. It's basically a fruit salad that would be super refreshing on a hot day or post-workout"

Andy Kong has worked very hard to get to where he is today. He credits becoming a millionaire by 20 to his strict Asian parents who tutored him at a young age by working for the family.
Kong, of Danville, Virginia, started working when he was only nine. English wasn't a strong suit for Andy's parents, and that's where he was able to assist his family the most. After school and on weekends he would help out at their family-owned restaurant and nail salons. Not only did he do the labor work, but he was also involved in creating online ads. This was his introduction to the world of online business.
Andy started his Amazon business in the eighth grade. When he learned about Amazon
Dropshipping(代发货模式) from a kid he saw on Instagram, he got inspired and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the store eventually got shut down because he was impatient with the growth. Instead of considering it a failure, he viewed this experience as a life lesson and learned from his mistakes. Meanwhile, his parents never stopped trying to talk him into focusing on school and their retail business.
"The biggest challenge when starting a business is getting someone to believe in you, "Andy says. He pushed through and did things for himself even when his loved ones discouraged it.
In 2019, Andy met his now business partners, and together, they created an Amazon management company called Project WiFi. This Project has proven to be extremely successful. They currently help over 55 clients run their online businesses, and plan to help many more in the future.
When asked about the secret to his success, Andy says, "Learning to sacrifice whether that's family, friends, or soccer game for a single goal is the only way to succeed, rather than attempting multiple things. If it's worth doing then it's worth doing well with no shortcuts. "

Every language and culture has curse words(脏话). What gives a curse word its power is partly its meaning and partly its sound. "In English, for example, curse words tend to contain a high percentage of plosive sounds—including P, T and K, "said Ryan McKay, a psychologist at University of London.
Dr. McKay teamed up with his colleague Shiri Lev-Ari to learn whether this familiar pattern went beyond English. They wondered whether it might even represent what's called sound symbolism. Sound symbolism is when a word sounds like what it means.
The researchers first asked fluent speakers of Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Korean and Russian to list the most vulgar(粗俗的) words they could think of. Once they'd made a list of each language's most frequently used curse words, the researchers compared these with neutral words from the same language. In these languages, they didn't find the plosive sounds that seem common in English curse words. "Instead, we found that the vulgar words were defined by what they lacked: the approximant sounds that include letters I, L, R, W and Y, "Dr. Lev-Ari said.
Next, the scientists invited 215 native speakers of six languages: Arabic, Chinese, Finnish, French, German and Spanish. The participants listened to pairs of words in a language they didn't speak, and guessed which word in each pair was offensive. In reality, all the words were invented. For example, the researchers started with the Albanian word "zog," for "bird, "and created the pair of fake words "yog" and "tsog."Participants were more likely to guess that words without approximants, such as "tsog," were curses.
Finally, the researchers combed through the dictionary for English curse words and their cleaned-up versions. Once again, the clean versions included more of the sounds I, L, R, W and Y.
A 20th-century linguistic(语言学的)principle claimed that the sounds of words were arbitrary: Any word could have any meaning. With curse words, though, as in other cases of sound symbolism, "the sounds themselves seem to carry meaning, "said Lev-Ari." That's a new thing, "said linguist Benjamin Bergen." Curse words across languages, unrelated to each other, may pattern similarly. "He also pointed out, to make sure the pattern of approximants missing from curses isn't an accident, it would be nice to find it in an even larger sample of languages.
27.What is the purpose of McKay and Lev-Ari's research
A.To analyze a phenomenon. B.To confirm an assumption.
C.To explain a definition. D.To challenge a theory.
28.What were the participants asked to do in the second part of the research
A.To decide which curse words are used more frequently.
B.To make up new curse words from real words.
C.To guess a word's offensiveness according to its sound.
D.To identify the approximants in curse words.
29.According to Lev-Ari, which of the four is likely to sound offensive
A.tusck B.sola C.darn D.biach
30.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.The old linguistic principle of sounds and meanings is wrong.
B.In sound symbolism, a word's sound represents its meaning.
C.The research reveals the similarities between different languages.
D.The result of the research is not fully accepted by scientists.

From then on, I often remember my student's reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers.

A.To earn fame and fortune.
B.To seek for a special material.
C.To share her work experience.
D.To learn new skills in making clothes.
17.What words could best describe Rechenberg
A.Confident and committed. B.Curious and considerate.
C.Ambitious and determined. D.Talented and elegant.
18.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about fragrant cloud organza
A.Its high quality. B.Its unique color.
C.Its storage conditions. D.Its production process.
19.Why is Chinese calligraphy mentioned in paragraph 5
A.To stress the importance of decorating clothes.
B.To show the inspiration for Rechenberg's clothes designing.
C.To explain Rechenberg's concept of clothes tailoring.
D.To state the impact of traditional culture on making fabrics.

23.Why did Andy work in his parents' shops at a young age

When I was in my fourth year of teaching, I was also(and am still)a high school track and field coach(田径教练). One year, I had a student, John, who entered my class when he was a junior. John changed to our school from Greece, and seemed to be interested in sports, so I encouraged him to join our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before, I did believe that he could do well in any event, and that I would be willing to coach him in whichever ones interested him. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.
About a month later, I had found out from other sources that John was a first-class tennis player, winning various junior awards in his home country. I went to him asking, "John, I really appreciate that you came out for the track team, but why didn't you play tennis instead It seems that would interest you a lot more, since you're so good at it."John answered, "Well, I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me, and that you thought I could do well in track, so I wanted to try it for that reason." From then on, I often remember my student's reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical(挑别的)students can be of themselves, I've found that a simple "I trust that you can do it! "can go a long way!
