My dad got a new job. We had to pack up and move away from everything we were familiar with. There were so many changes. We came from the north, and now we were almost as far south as possible. We landed in South Florida, and we were total strangers. We moved over during the summer vacation, so I didn't have to deal with school right away. Summer passed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adapted to the Sunshine State.
School was coming, and I was afraid of it. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends Would I fit in Would I survive in this strange new world Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn't know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading. I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
Then one day, a tall boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team. I knew him — he was the star player! "Hey," he said. "You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practising. The subjects, especially English, really bother us. Do you think you could help us " "Yes. Oh, definitely yes. I could, and I would," I replied with surprise. We made the deal with an exchange of smiles.

I was backpacking in Panama over Christmas in 2018, and planned to climb Volcán Barú. It is one of the only places on earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time.
I set off before sunrise. It was a bit cold, so I had pulled on leggings under my trousers. I've always felt safe travelling as a solo (单独) woman. I love the freedom. When I got to the base at 7 am, the ranger (护林员) was unwilling to let me go alone, but relented (缓和) because an American couple were behind me.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. I walked for an hour and had reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to take a photograph. Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me.
I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively towards me. I could see their teeth looked sharp, and they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn't want to try to outrun them.
I kept walking, saying, "Good dog, calm down, " as evenly as possible. But I was terrified. Then one dashed up and sunk his teeth into my leg below the knee. I was shocked. He held on for a few seconds. The pain took my breath away as I felt his fangs (犬牙) in my flesh. I considered bending down to get a rock to fight him off, but was nervous in case he went for my neck or the other one launched at me.
I tried to keep walking, and he finally let go. Then he was behind me, growling (嗥叫). I kept going, my body shaking, until after about 15 minutes I was out of their sight.
When I thought it was safe, I stopped.
A pickup truck appeared, driven by the ranger.

Summertime is lots of fun, but when it's too hot it can instead be very uncomfortable and dangerous.
When the temperature rose to 38℃ in Fort Worth Texas several years ago it was especially difficult for those who didn't have an air conditioner (空调). 95-year-old World War I soldier Julius Hatley was one of those who have to stand the burning heat. His air conditioner had broken and he was completely burning up.
Still, even at 95, he was doing everything he could to get by without help. Julius tried spending time under the trees in his garden—but at one point, he just couldn't take it any more. So he took action. Not knowing what else to do about the extreme heat, 95-year-old Hatley called his local Fort Worth, Texas police department.
William Margolis, was the officer on duty that day. He knew this was a common 911 call. For the police, Hatley's request was not an urgent call because there were more important and bigger event waiting for them to do. Still, Margolis and his partner Christopher Weir managed to spare time for a visit.
When they got there around 8:30 am, they found his house was 38℃ to 39℃ already. And the temperature was still rising. After checking the room for a little while, Margolis and Weir quickly discovered that both Hatley's central air conditioning and window unit were broken, leaving the man to suffer alone.
The two men didn't have a solution to Hatley's problem right then, but they promised they would find it out. It didn't take long, however, for Margolis to realize that he just couldn't shake the image of the poor, old man out of his head. He requested that he and Weir make a stop at a shop, where they could buy Hatley a new air conditioner themselves.

LESSONS LEARNED OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Mr. Gray was my history teacher in tenth grade. I couldn't tell what kind of history he taught for two reasons: one, I never liked history, and two, my body was in class, but my mind wasn't. Mr. Gray wasn't the teacher who offered retakes (补考) on tests; he did so much more for me than that. He offered me a pair of ears and a shoulder to cry on.
Before Mr. Gray came along, one major event was taking place in my life. My mom told me she wanted to divorce my dad. Why then I didn't understand. I barricaded (筑起壁垒) myself in my basement bedroom, listening to angry music and sleeping. I fell into a depression and my grades were falling. Then there was Mr. Gray.
I sat against a brick wall outside the library, knees pulled into my chest, head down, surrounded by my noisy friends that I was slowly distancing myself from, when I heard his voice: "Ever feel like you're a fire hydrant (消防栓) and every dog in the neighborhood is stopping by to visit you?" I picked my head up and then I saw Mr. Gray.
I had heard him use this line in the classroom a few times before, when it looked like a kid was having a bad day. It usually aroused a laugh and ended there. This time was different though— he was waiting for an answer. Next thing I knew I was following him into the library.
We sat amongst the shelves of the mostly empty library for the rest of lunchtime. I don't remember much about that first conversation other than the unconditional promise he made me of lending a pair of ears and a shoulder to cry on. What made him such a special teacher was that he saw that I was struggling and reached out to me outside of the classroom.

When Someone Believes in You
When Marco was a boy, he tried everything to get his father's love and attention. He worked hard to earn excellent marks; he tried to be obedient (顺从的), he chose inspiring friends and always tried to behave well.
Sensitive and shy, he always wore turtleneck shirts. He hid behind his hair, which he wore long around his face and ears. To make it worse, Marco was naturally shorter than the other kids. And because his good marks had allowed him to skip second grade-he was younger than everyone else. This added nothing to his already low self-confidence.
When Marco was eight his parents divorced, and Marco was sent to a boarding school. Six years later, he and his young sister Sandra moved in with their dad and his new wife in St-Léonard, a French Canadian and Italian neighbourhood on the east side of Montreal. Between his work and his new young wife, it felt to Marco that his father had little time for him and Sandra. Except for his demands around housework after school, there was no communication. It seemed to Marco the only time his dad ever spoke to him was to be demanding or critical. But his dad really did love him and wanted the best for him. It was his own insecurity that made him react to anything that might threaten his son's future.
Marco sank further into his low self-respect and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated, inadequate, depressed and confused. He felt desperately alone and lonely. He began to fear coming home from school every day.
One day, his aunt called him. To Marco, this seemed like a miracle. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on his birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest called Gala Personnalité sponsored by Club Optimiste- and she thought about him. She thought he should give it a try. She told him she firmly believed he could perform on stage like the other kids, since she had seen him do skits (小品) for the family at Christmas.

On Saturday, we gathered at the hall to witness the award ceremony for the senior scouts (童子军). Receiving an award on such a day was a great honor for any scout, and all desired to be the scout selected to give the summary of the year's activities for the association.
I was not the one selected to give the summary and for that, I was grateful. I could hardly stand in front of a large crowd to make a speech, but Sean could. He was selected to do the honor because he was the President of the Boy Scouts for schools. My job was much simpler. Being the Vice-President, I was very much behind the scenes, content to ensure that everything was in smooth running order.
It was an hour to go before the ceremony began, and I had put the finishing touches to the stage. Walking down the stage, I saw my teammates in a state of panic. When they saw me, they ran to me to tell me that Sean met with a traffic accident and would not make it to the award ceremony. Someone else had to give the summary. All of them looked hopefully at me, and I could feel my knees beginning to collapse.
All their arguments against my unwillingness were valid. I had a copy of the speech as well as the benefit of having seen Sean rehearse (排练) it. I was the Vice-President and therefore should take his place. Finally, I was firmly told not to decline any longer and they said that they were convinced that I would do the right thing. I sank down onto the floor, totally shocked by the situation.
I knew I was not a confident speaker, and the thought of presenting a summary in front of so many distinguished guests horrified me. To think that the fame of the scouts would take a beating because of me! The burden of responsibility troubled me greatly.

Gifts for the poor
Mrs. Susan was mean and bad-tempered. There was no other way to describe her. Just the other day I heard her telling the headmaster that children took too much time in arts. She even said that most of us didn't understand what we were doing. I left the office feeling very angry.
My anger didn't last, however. It was December and Christmas was approaching. Excitement filled me right up to the top of my head. I smiled and laughed, singing "Jingle Bells" as we rode home from school.
After dinner, Mom and Dad called me into the family room. I knew what we were going to discuss. Every year for as long as I could remember, we had chosen a family who needed some extra help at Christmas time, and we had taken gifts and food to their house. It was one of our family's favorite traditions.
Dad said, "It's time we decide which family to help this year. Do you have a suggestion " Some years it had been really easy to decide, but this year I couldn't think of anyone. Dad looked at Mom. "Maybe Mom has a suggestion. Sometimes she notices things the rest of us miss." Mom smiled. "I do know of someone who needs our help. I think we should help Mrs. Susan."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing! "But, Mom," I protested, "she seems to have plenty of money and she dresses in nice clothes. Besides, she's really bad-tempered. She doesn't even like kids. She might even kick our gifts off her porch (门廊). I think we should choose someone else."
"I know Mrs. Susan has enough money," Mom said. "I know she isn't very pleasant to be around. But she was divorced before she moved here. She has three children who have their own children and never come to see her. She is very lonely and unhappy. You see, she never celebrates Christmas. April, you weren't quite right when you said she wasn't poor."
"You mean she's poor in love " I asked. "Yes. Sometimes it's much more painful to be poor in love than it is to be poor in money " I was quiet for minutes. Then Dad said, "Let's take a vote." Dad' and Mom's hands went up. Looking at them, I unwillingly raised mine.

The New Kid in Class
At the beginning of the new term, every student came to school happily. One day, Jack-son, a friendly student, sat at his school desk and looked over at the new kid in class. His name was Billy, who just moved here from Florida. His first day in class was yesterday and, so far, Jackson had not talked to him. Today, at rest, Jackson was going to try to make a new friend.
When the bell rang for a rest, Jackson hurried out of his seat and followed Billy outside.
"Hi Billy," Jackson said with a smile as they walked outside. "Do you want to play basketball "
"No. I'm not very good at basketball. "
"Do you want to play kickball " Jackson asked again.
"No. I'm not good at that either," Billy said. Billy walked away from Jackson and sat on a big flat rock in the grassy part of the school yard.
Jackson stood there and wondered what to do next. He asked Billy to do two things and both times Billy said no. He felt a little depressed. Maybe Billy didn't like to get along with Jackson. Maybe he didn't want to be friends. Jackson thought about playing basketball with the other kids. He looked over at Billy sitting on the rock all by himself. It must be hard to move to a new school, Jackson thought. He decided to give it one more try and let him be his friend. What would be a better one He paced backwards and forwards nervously.
It was at that time that Jackson reached into his pocket and pulled out two toy cars that his brother gave him before. His brother has tons of cars and always gives him his old ones. It was the two cars that made him give it one more try.

On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the New York railway station, playing his violin. The music was so excellent that many people stopped to put some money into the hat of the young man.
The next day, the young artist came to the same place, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Differently from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it under his hat. Then he began to play the violin. It sounded more pleasant than ever.
Soon he was surrounded with people who were attracted by the words on the paper. It said, "Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim (认领) it soon. "
After about half an hour, a middle-aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist and said, "Yes, it's you. I knew that you were an honest man and would certainly come here. " The young violinist asked calmly, "Are you Mr George Sang " The man nodded. The violinist asked, "Did you lose something " "It's a lottery ticket, " said the man.

"Are you going to give Tanya your Glenda Glitter doll " said Marsha's mom." Yes, Mom," she said." This is the one I want her to have. But now I'm going to get Glenda all nice and clean." Soon, Glenda Glitter looked just like new.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Something gradually changed after that. We got along quite well. We were often seen study in the library as a group or walk to classes together. I tried to help whenever possible and shared my learning experience with them. I was really excited when I found learning methods which were suitable for them. With our joint efforts, their English performance improved significantly. The basketball players expressed their heartfelt gratitude to me after seeing their grades.
Paragraph 2:
Meanwhile, the basketball players taught me how to play basketball. I learned a lot of basketball skills from them and became better and better at the sport, which made me have the confidence to take part in basketball games with them sometimes. Through basketball, I made more friends. Gradually, I became more outgoing and had the courage to communicate with others on my own initiative. Not only did I help the basketball players, but they changed me.
I tried to help whenever possible运用了省略句结构;I was really excited when I found learning methods which were suitable for them和I learned a lot of basketball skills from them and became better and better at the sport, which made me have the confidence to take part in basketball games with them sometimes都运用了定语从句; Not only did I help the basketball players, but they changed me运用了倒装句结构。

【答案】When I thought it was safe, I stopped. I rolled up my trousers and saw blood. The leggings had acted as a bit of a barrier but there were fang marks on the left side of my knee, seeping blood. I managed to stop the bleeding and cleaned up as best as I could with tissues from my bag. I couldn't walk up the volcano, but I couldn't go back down either because I'd have to pass them again. I imagined being stuck by myself all night. I was really scared. Suddenly I heard rustling and froze.
A pickup truck appeared, driven by the ranger. I must have been as white as a sheet. He told me to get in. The relief was unbelievable. A few minutes later, we saw the dogs in the road where I'd left them. As we drove past, they jumped up at the truck, growling. When we finally reached the gate, I saw the American couple. I learned it was they who told the ranger what had happened. I could never thank them enough for what they did for me. They saved my life!
The leggings had acted as a bit of a barrier but there were fang marks on the left side of my knee, seeping blood. 运用了转折并列句;I couldn't walk up the volcano, but I couldn't go back down either because I'd have to pass them again.运用了转折并列句,原因状语从句; A few minutes later, we saw the dogs in the road where I'd left them. 运用了限制性定语从句;As we drove past, they jumped up at the truck, growling. 运用了时间状语从句;When we finally reached the gate, I saw the American couple. 运用了时间状语从句;I learned it was they who told the ranger what had happened. 运用了宾语从句,强调句;I could never thank them enough for what they did for me. 运用了宾语从句。

But the kindness didn't stop there.
……
The 95 year old was touched by all that they had done.
【答案】 But the kindness didn't stop there. What they didn't expect was that more people were to join in the kindness. While shopping, the officers told Hatley's problem to the shop assistants, asking them which models were best suited to his needs. Touched by the men's decision to buy the air conditioner themselves, the shop assistants also joined in, donating $150 towards the cause. Margolis and Weir invited another officer to help them fix the air conditioner in Hatley's house. And now they are working on getting his windows replaced, his house repainted and food provided every week.
The 95-year-old was touched by all that they had done. He was so moved that tears welled up his eyes. He just couldn't believe what had happened because all these years he was living all by himself. He tried to solve every trouble himself. But now he knew he was not alone and if he needed help, the police would do everything they could to help him. What a difference a little bit of kindness can make!

Paragraph 1:
However, that didn't change our classroom relationship.
Paragraph 2:
Many lunchtime library conversations followed throughout the school year.
【答案】 However, that didn't change our classroom relationship. Every time he noticed my mind was wandering. He would call on me. Wearing the stern look with the same expectations and trying to draw my attention back to class. Unsurprisingly. I still distanced myself from classmates; I still didn't know the answers more than half the time. But I think he knew that I was at a crossroads in my life and that my history grade didn't matter much compared to everything else that was going on. Apparently, my problem needed to be addressed first outside the classroom and then in class.
More lunchtime library conversations followed throughout the school year: They always made me feel freer and although I still struggled, I didn't feel trapped like before. Mr. Gray presented me with an outlet for my pain and frustration: he was always there unconditionally, offering me a pair of ears and a shoulder to cry on. His presence and life wisdom enabled me to become less defensive and open up more. Gradually, the hours spent amongst the library shelves became my favorite time to take his "class". Little as I remembered about what he taught in the history class, the lessons learned outside the classroom would never fade away.

……
As I stood on the stage, my heart beat violently.
【答案】 But there was really no way out of the situation. In the end, I quickly rehearsed the speech and got ready to go on stage for the presentation. I looked calm and collected but inside, I was a trembling mass of jelly. Although they kept encouraging me, I still felt very worried that my poor performance would cost us the opportunity to win an award. Not long after, I was called to do the presentation. Having butterflies in my stomach, I walked onto the stage.
As I stood on the stage, my heart beat violently. My face turned pale, and my mind went blank. I could not remember what I was supposed to say. I was at a loss what to do when I saw my teammates smiling at me with trustful looks. It was then that I realized that I should try my best for our team. Instantly, I reorganized my thoughts, and proceeded to speak into the microphone. When I was finished, all my teammates stood up and applauded loudly.

With the box in hand, I could feel my heart pounding when ringing Susan's doorbell.
【答案】 Mom said besides buying her a gift, we should make something by hand. Reminded by my mother, I spent a long time making a gift and writing some Christmas wishes. I wrapped the gift carefully and put it in a beautiful box. On the top of the box I tied a bright red bow. Time flowed. When I finished all the preparations, my heart was full of excitement. On Christmas Day, my family and I went to Susan's door.
With the box in hand, I could feel my heart pounding when ringing Susan's doorbell. Ms. Susan was so surprised that her jaw dropped when she saw us. I said with great joy, "Merry Christmas! Here's a present for you, Ms. Susan!" With great gratitude, Ms. Susan invited us in and opened my gift box. It's a picture I made myself, which was about Ms. Susan reuniting with her family. She was so excited that she burst into tears and suddenly hugged me in her arms, sobbing, "This is the most meaningful gift I have ever received, and the most unforgettable Christmas I have ever had!"

The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang's name was seen. "Is this it " he asked. George nodded and took the lottery ticket and kissed it.

Marsha's mom came in." What's the matter, Rabbit " she said.
"I miss Tanya already. Isn't that silly " Marsha said.
"No," her mother said softly." Missing a best friend isn't silly at all." Marsha's eyes were wet.
"I know how you feel." "You do " asked Marsha. Marsha's mom nodded." I had a best friend when I was your age. And she went away to camp, too." "I felt pretty sad," Marsha's mom said. "I wanted my best friend to think about me. So I gave her something." "What " asked Marsha." I gave her my best necklace," her mom said.
"You did " asked Marsha." Well, I wanted her to have it," Marsha's mom said," Maybe you could give Tanya one of your favorite things to take to camp. How about a doll Then she will never forget that you are her best friend." Marsha wiped her eyes." Mom, that's a great idea!" she said.
"Are you going to give Tanya your Glenda Glitter doll " said Marsha's mom." Yes, Mom," she said." This is the one I want her to have. But now I'm going to get Glenda all nice and clean." Soon, Glenda Glitter looked just like new.
Next it was time to dress the doll. Marsha ran to her room. In a flash she was back. Her hands were full of doll's dresses. "This is the one I like best," she said." And I know Tanya likes it best, too."
"Let's see. I think I can fix this little rip(口子)." Marsha's mom was good at fixing things. The doll dress soon looked good as new.
"Look, Mom!" she said. "Glenda looks beautiful."
