My dad got a new job. We had to pack up and move away from everything we were familiar with. There were so many changes. We came from the north, and now we were almost as far south as possible. We landed in South Florida, and we were total strangers. We moved over during the summer vacation, so I didn't have to deal with school right away. Summer passed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adapted to the Sunshine State.
School was coming, and I was afraid of it. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends Would I fit in Would I survive in this strange new world Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn't know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading. I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
Then one day, a tall boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team. I knew him — he was the star player! "Hey," he said. "You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practising. The subjects, especially English, really bother us. Do you think you could help us " "Yes. Oh, definitely yes. I could, and I would," I replied with surprise. We made the deal with an exchange of smiles.

All their arguments against my unwillingness were valid. I had a copy of the speech as well as the benefit of having seen Sean rehearse (排练) it. I was the Vice-President and therefore should take his place. Finally, I was firmly told not to decline any longer and they said that they were convinced that I would do the right thing. I sank down onto the floor, totally shocked by the situation.
I knew I was not a confident speaker, and the thought of presenting a summary in front of so many distinguished guests horrified me. To think that the fame of the scouts would take a beating because of me! The burden of responsibility troubled me greatly.

The New Kid in Class
At the beginning of the new term, every student came to school happily. One day, Jack-son, a friendly student, sat at his school desk and looked over at the new kid in class. His name was Billy, who just moved here from Florida. His first day in class was yesterday and, so far, Jackson had not talked to him. Today, at rest, Jackson was going to try to make a new friend.
When the bell rang for a rest, Jackson hurried out of his seat and followed Billy outside.
"Hi Billy," Jackson said with a smile as they walked outside. "Do you want to play basketball "
"No. I'm not very good at basketball. "
"Do you want to play kickball " Jackson asked again.
"No. I'm not good at that either," Billy said. Billy walked away from Jackson and sat on a big flat rock in the grassy part of the school yard.
Jackson stood there and wondered what to do next. He asked Billy to do two things and both times Billy said no. He felt a little depressed. Maybe Billy didn't like to get along with Jackson. Maybe he didn't want to be friends. Jackson thought about playing basketball with the other kids. He looked over at Billy sitting on the rock all by himself. It must be hard to move to a new school, Jackson thought. He decided to give it one more try and let him be his friend. What would be a better one He paced backwards and forwards nervously.
It was at that time that Jackson reached into his pocket and pulled out two toy cars that his brother gave him before. His brother has tons of cars and always gives him his old ones. It was the two cars that made him give it one more try.

I had been in a bad mood since my new neighbor moved in. I often typed articles on my computer. But no sooner had I become inspired to write than I could hear a girl singing next door.
She always sang this: "However hard the winds blow, you will stray(走失)no more from my company. We watch the meteor shower(流星雨)pouring down together. Your tears drop onto my shoulder. You shall believe that I am brave only for you, my dear. You will see a time of good cheer …"
She didn't sing well, and she was even out of tune, so it was absolute noise pollution for me. Sometimes, when I was just about to write, she started singing. This happened over and over. So how could I keep my spirits up and go on writing
One day, I sat down in front of the computer and heard the girl singing again. It was too noisy and disturbed my thoughts. I had my husband go to complain about the noise.
Ten minutes later, my husband came back with a sad look, saying:"That girl is only 17, but she has bone cancer. Her mother said that the more painful it is, the louder her daughter sings. The singing helps her reduce her pain. Her poor mother begs our pardon again and again for her daughter interrupting us, "my husband said.
Immediately I was taken aback by his words. I said to my husband:"Please tell her mother that the girl can sing as much as she likes. We don't mind it at all. "
From that day on, I no longer thought the girl was doing anything wrong, and even got used to her singing. I felt it was like sniffing( 闻到)the smell of sunlight and watching the flowers and plants.

The young boy saw me, or rather, he saw the car and quickly ran up to me, eager to sell his bunches of bananas and bags of peanuts. Though he appeared to be about twelve, he seemed to have already known the bitterness of life. "Bananas 300 naira. Peanuts 200 naira." He said in a low voice. I bargained him down to 200 totals for the fruit and nuts. When he agreed, I handed him a 500 naira bill. He didn't have change, so I told him not to worry. He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth.
When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of my position in a society where it's not that uncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the corner selling fruit in the burning sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it brought to us.
I pulled over and rolled down my window. He had a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts ready. I waved them away. "What's up " I asked him.
"I…I don't have money to buy books for school." I reached into my pocket and handed him two fresh 500 naira bills. "Will this help " I asked. He looked around nervously before taking the money. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made about 5,000 naira or less each year. "Thank you, sir." he said. "Thank you very much!"
When driving home, I wondered if my little friend actually used the money for schoolbooks. What if he's a cheat And then I wondered why I did it. Did I do it to make myself feel better Was I using him Later, I realized that I didn't know his name or the least bit about him, nor did I think to ask.

A few days before Christmas, while enjoying coffees, my girlfriend and I noticed a woman trying to get her bank card to work.
"Do you know her " I asked my friend.
"I do. Give me a minute. I'm going to go and see if I can help," she replied, standing up to walk over to her.
A few minutes later, my friend returned to the table with the woman. The woman looked upset. Her eyes were swollen, as if she'd been crying all night. She looked pale, tired, and messy. After I was introduced, my friend asked her if she was okay. She admitted she wasn't and burst into tears.
I could sense she was a little embarrassed by her emotional response. Wanting to put her at ease, I quickly told her not to worry. I shared that I was a new mom with many troubles and I'd already cried fourteen times that day. She laughed but soon her tears were flowing again.
For the next forty-five minutes, my friend and I both sat and patiently listened to her. She lost her husband before Christmas and their bank accounts were now left nothing. As a stay-at-home mom of two, in one split second, her entire life had come crashing down around her.
We tried our best to cheer her up. My friend even tried to give her some cash, which she refused. When she finally got up to leave, she wiped her tears, thanked us both for listening, and walked out.
As I drove home, I couldn't stop thinking about how depressed she looked when she left the cafe. No one deserves to feel that sad, I thought, especially right before Christmas. There must be something I can do to help. I racked my brain(绞尽脑汁) for an answer.

I was twenty then, teaching a class of thirty students in Toronto including Mike, a 10-year-old street kid. Having lost his father and mother, he lived with a mentally-disturbed grandmother.
He was always hungry, so each day I'd take him for breakfast before class. Each noon after I shared my lunch with him, I taught him new skills—using a microscope, constructing a camera etc.
One day Mike told me of his dream. Most kids in the class wanted to be doctors, teachers or some such thing, but not Mike! His desire was to be a gangster(强盗)!And he was serious about it.
I believed all children had a gift for what he wanted to be. If he wanted to be a gangster, I'd do all I could to help him become the very best "gangster".
I had a plan. Every Saturday after we had breakfast, I took him to the Law Library of the city. I explained to him a good gangster had to know something about criminal law, and reading up on law was the only way to learn. His young mind was interested, and he dove in.
That was how we spent each Saturday morning that year. I'd drop him off at the law library. Three hours later, I'd return, pick him up for lunch and after a review of his morning's work, take him home.
The following year I taught in another school far away, which prevented me continuing to participate physically with him on Saturday mornings. But I provided him with public transportation tickets so he could keep up his regular study at the library.
Later I got married and moved to London. Sadly, and to my great regret, I lost contact with Mike.
Years passed. I often thought of him, wondering what had become of him. Then, one day, I was back in Toronto on business, looking up the number of a former colleague in the telephone directory, and there, Mike's name as part of a title of "JUDGES and LAWYERS" danced off the page into my eyes.

It was the first week of the summer vacation, and Parisa was already ready to be back at school. Not everyone she knew liked school, but Parisa loved learning new things. Even more than that, she loved school because she got to be with her friends all day long. Parisa was an only child, and she thought it was too. quiet. at home.
Now her two best fiends in the neighborhood were out of town for two weeks and to Parisa, it seemed like two years. What would she do Sitting on the wide front step of her house, she looked through her favorite kid magazine. The word "competition" caught her eye. "Create Your Own Magazine! "the headline read.
Parisa loved magazines, but it had never occurred to her that she could create one herself. The article said competitors must send in an eight-page magazine with handwritten articles and hand drawn pictures——nothing was printed by computer.
Parisa returned to her room and lay down on the floor next to her cat. This was what she did whenever she-needed to think of really good ideas. She closed her eyes and imagined all sorts of magazines. She imagined magazines about bikes, skating, ballet; soccer, dessert.. But after much thought, she knew what she wanted to feature (以……为特色) in her magazine——her neighborhood, for there were always interesting things. She would call it "The Tall Pines Gazette (报纸)"and fill it with news.
She found a notebook and a pen and left her room. Then she found her grandmother at the door and told her about the competition. "Granny, I'm going to be a reporter for a while, "Parisa said. "I'm going to see if there's any news. "Her grandmother smiled, "Well, good luck, honey. You do like asking questions, so I bet you won't have too much trouble finding news. Marathons are not for the faint of heart, nor the faint of lungs. You might think you're up for it, but then your lungs will remind you halfway through that this might be too much. I have a ton of respect for people who do compete in them. Make sure you stretch a lot before you do one! This story though, is about someone who could have finished the race sooner but chose not to.
There are people who are well in-shape to run a marathon, and marines (海军陆战队士兵) are definitely some of those people. Military training is some of the toughest out there. They'll make you do push up (俯卧撑) after push up, course after course, and they'll make you do it regularly. A marine is thus well-prepared to run something like a marathon race.
Myles Kerr was a 19-year-old marine who joined in a 5-kilometre marathon. As the name implies, a 5-kilometre marathon is 5 kilometers of running you have to do. And 5 kilometers is a lot to run on foot. It is definitely not a distance you should attempt without a lot of preparation and training. Myles, thanks to his training, was even able to wear boots while he ran.
While Myles and the other marines with him could handle this just fine, one other runner couldn't. It was 9-year-old Brandon Fuchs. The boy joined in the race as part of a group. However, he got separated from the group as the race progressed. He was now quite far behind and struggling to finish the race.
Brandon is just 9 years old, but he is fond of sports. He always sits in front of TV watching matches of all kinds of sports, especially matches concerning running. He ever participated in some kinds of running races, which made him even more interested in sports. When he knew a short-distanced marathon was to be held in his city, he signed up for it without hesitation.

Something gradually changed after that. We got along quite well. We were often seen study in the library as a group or walk to classes together. I tried to help whenever possible and shared my learning experience with them. I was really excited when I found learning methods which were suitable for them. With our joint efforts, their English performance improved significantly. The basketball players expressed their heartfelt gratitude to me after seeing their grades.
Paragraph 2:
Meanwhile, the basketball players taught me how to play basketball. I learned a lot of basketball skills from them and became better and better at the sport, which made me have the confidence to take part in basketball games with them sometimes. Through basketball, I made more friends. Gradually, I became more outgoing and had the courage to communicate with others on my own initiative. Not only did I help the basketball players, but they changed me.
I tried to help whenever possible运用了省略句结构;I was really excited when I found learning methods which were suitable for them和I learned a lot of basketball skills from them and became better and better at the sport, which made me have the confidence to take part in basketball games with them sometimes都运用了定语从句; Not only did I help the basketball players, but they changed me运用了倒装句结构。

When I thought it was safe, I stopped. I rolled up my trousers and saw blood. The leggings had acted as a bit of a barrier but there were fang marks on the left side of my knee, seeping blood. I managed to stop the bleeding and cleaned up as best as I could with tissues from my bag. I couldn't walk up the volcano, but I couldn't go back down either because I'd have to pass them again. I imagined being stuck by myself all night. I was really scared. Suddenly I heard rustling and froze.
A pickup truck appeared, driven by the ranger. I must have been as white as a sheet. He told me to get in. The relief was unbelievable. A few minutes later, we saw the dogs in the road where I'd left them. As we drove past, they jumped up at the truck, growling. When we finally reached the gate, I saw the American couple. I learned it was they who told the ranger what had happened. I could never thank them enough for what they did for me. They saved my life!
The leggings had acted as a bit of a barrier but there were fang marks on the left side of my knee, seeping blood. I couldn't walk up the volcano, but I couldn't go back down either because I'd have to pass them again. A few minutes later, we saw the dogs in the road where I'd left them. As we drove past, they jumped up at the truck, growling. When we finally reached the gate, I saw the American couple. I learned it was they who told the ranger what had happened. I could never thank them enough for what they did for me.

But there was really no way out of the situation. In the end, I quickly rehearsed the speech and got ready to go on stage for the presentation. I looked calm and collected but inside, I was a trembling mass of jelly. Although they kept encouraging me, I still felt very worried that my poor performance would cost us the opportunity to win an award. Not long after, I was called to do the presentation. Having butterflies in my stomach, I walked onto the stage.
As I stood on the stage, my heart beat violently. My face turned pale, and my mind went blank. I could not remember what I was supposed to say. I was at a loss what to do when I saw my teammates smiling at me with trustful looks. It was then that I realized that I should try my best for our team. Instantly, I reorganized my thoughts, and proceeded to speak into the microphone. When I was finished, all my teammates stood up and applauded loudly.

"Well, you made one friend today," Jackson said. Hearing that, Billy's eyes were widely open because he couldn't believe what had happened.

Afterward I left home on business and one day my husband phoned me.“You know," he said the girl has been hospitalized. And she has become bald after receiving chemotherapy treatment(化疗). Chances are dim that she could pull through this time.”He choked. My heart sank with his words. I was wondering why life was so hard on the poor girl, how she could make it through and how long she could take it. I felt sorry because I could do nothing but pray for her. I sincerely hope that everyone on this planet can be blessed and every patient can be cured by love.
One month later; I returned home but I could feel that something was missing. I could no longer hear the girl next door sing. One day there was a knock on the door. It was the mother! She once again said sorry to us, making me more embarrassed. She then took out an envelope.“Nancy, my daughter, knows you are a writer and she asks me to give it to you.”I opened it with trembling hands. There was a note in it:“However hard the winds blow, you will stray no more from my company.." My tears welled up unbearably. The girl's singing rose in my mind. I hope the voice is everlasting for you, me, and everyone.

Gladly, a solution came.
The kids were overjoyed when hearing that Santa(圣诞老人)sent them gifts.
Gladly, a solution came. I decided to make Christmas a little better for her family by buying them some gifts without hurting her pride. As soon as I got home, I called my girlfriend excitedly and explained my plan. She agreed with me and offered to buy and deliver the presents with me. On Christmas Eve morning, we drove to the woman's house with a large box of food and a few presents in the name of Santa, imagining their reactions when they found out that Santa had sent them gifts when they were least expecting it.
The kids were overjoyed when hearing that Santa(圣诞老人) had sent them gifts. However, their mom seemed embarrassed at first. It was not until we insisted that Christmas was a time for shared joy and Santa didn't accept returns that she accepted the presents and thanked our kindness sincerely. Seeing their faces filled with joy made me feel like I had made a real difference to their lives. The gifts were just the beginning, hopefully enough to put the family's lives back on track. I had a feeling that this would be a Christmas to remember.

I wondered, "Could it be him "
When we were able to get together, he told me his road to the law.
I wondered, "Could it be him " I dialed the number, gave my full name to a secretary and was put on hold. A long fifteen seconds later, a gentleman was on the line. His opening statement was, "Mr. Kowal (or whatever), I've really … missed you." Then there was silence. Tears welling up in my eyes, I blurted out between sobs, "Mike, I only wish I'd kept in touch with you all these years. I'm really proud of you." In a trembling voice on the other side, Mike answered, "I wouldn't be here now if it weren't for you."
When we were able to get together, he told me his road to the law. Studying law in the library enabled him to explore his inner depths—the "gangster" he had wanted to be was something of a hero protecting the disadvantaged with knowledge. He studied all the way to the law university while working part-time for his education fees. Now he had risen to be one of the most successful criminal lawyers in Canada. He owed all to me while I thought the greatest good we teachers could do for the students was to assist in revealing the best of their own.

It just happened that the boy caught sight of Myles.
……
Seeing Myles run together with Brandon, people felt confused.
It just happened that the boy caught sight of Myles. Brandon then spoke the words "Sir Will you please run with me ", so Myles slowed down and ran alongside him. The other marines with him had already ran far ahead and had no idea what Myles was doing. They even feared that he might have bitten off more than he could chew with the race, and that he might have come down with fatigue or an injury. Seeing Myles run together with Brandon, people felt confused. But they wouldn't know it until the pair made it to the finish line. They both finished the race, but Myles did give up the lead he worked hard to get. That didn't matter to him though. This boy needed him, and that mattered a whole lot more. Myles's action meant a lot to the 9- year-old Brandon. But the marine didn't think it was a big deal. Myles said that he was just doing what any man would do.
