Text 10
M: Many strange things occur at sea. Every year, even nowadays, ships disappear and are never seen again. One of the strangest occurrences is the story of the Mary Celeste, a small sailing ship which was carrying industrial alcohol from New York to Italy. The Mary Celeste left New York in early November 1872. A month later it was found in the eastern Atlantic 600 miles from Gibraltar. The ship was not damaged and did not seem to be in any danger, but the lifeboat and the ten people who left New York on the ship were gone. They were never found.
Many explanations were suggested for the disappearance of the people on the Mary Celeste, but no one managed to find proof for any of the explanations. All the experts could come to only one sure conclusion: The people left the ship in the lifeboat. Then perhaps the lifeboat sank in a sudden storm. But why did the people leave the ship We still do not have an answer to that question.郫都区名校2022-2023学年高一下学期3月月考

The United States celebrates Valentine’s Day each year on February 14. Many other countries celebrate Valentine’s Day, too, each in their own way. Here is a look at the Valentine’s Day traditions in three countries.
Wales: land of love spoons
In Wales, it is called St.Dwynwen’s Day, which takes place on January 25.The traditional romantic gift on this day is a love spoon.
Beginning in the 17th century, Welsh men made beautiful wooden spoons as a show of their love for that special person in their lives. Each shape of the spoons has a different meaning. For example, horseshoes mean good luck; keys represent the key to a lover’s heart; and wheels are a sign of support.
Argentina: a week of sweets
Argentina celebrates Valentine’s Day in February, but also gives a whole other week to love in July. They call it Sweetness Week. If you kiss someone, they have to give you a sugary treat.
Sweetness Week started in 1989 with a candy company called Arcor. They made an advertisement called “Candy for a Kiss”. The idea was to give the company’s chocolates and other candies in exchange for a sweet kiss on the cheek. The campaign had a stronger effect than the company expected—it led to a new holiday!
Every July, couples who take part give each other candies and kisses all week long.
South Korea: three is a charm
For South Koreans, Valentine’s Day happens in three parts: February 14, March 14 and April 14.
On February 14, women traditionally give men gifts of chocolate to show their love. One month later, on a holiday known as White Day, men show their thanks by giving women a sweet gift. The name “White Day” comes from the custom of giving white-colored gifts.
Let’s not forget Black Day on April 14.S ingle people who did not get gifts on February 14 or March 14 often gather on Black Day to eat noodles with black bean soup.
What does a key-shaped spoon mean
Deep love. B. Good luck. C. Strong support. D. Real thanks. 22.When is Sweetness Week celebrated
A. In February. B. In March. C. In April. D. In July. 23.What would be a good gift on White Day
Brown chocolates.
Black beans.
White milk candies.
Silver spoons.

Dogs are often referred to as “man's best friend”. But MacKenzie, a four-pound chihuahua, who was named winner of the 2020 American Hero Dog Competition on October 19, 2020, is making the world a better place for humans and animals alike.
In its tenth year in 2020, the annual contest is the brainchild of American Humane Association, the country's
first national charitable organization founded for the safety and well-being of animals. Often called the “Oscars for dogs”, the award recognizes dogs who make extremely great contributions (贡献)to society.
The competition of 2020 attracted over 400 entries from across the country. These heroic dogs have gone above the call of duty, saving lives, comforting the ill and aged and reminding us of the powerful, age-old ties between animals and people. While all were impressive, it was tiny MacKenzie who won the judges' hearts.
MacKenzie's path to stardom was not easy. Born with a mouth disability, she had to be fed through a tube(管
子)for the first year of her life. Despite her own struggles, she always seemed to think more of other animals in need. “Never have I seen such a will to live. Though sick, she carefully looked after the baby animals at the rescue
( 救助)center,” said her caretaker.
A life-saving operation performed in 2014 gave MacKenzie the ability to eat independently. The seven-year- old chihuahua is now working for the Mia Foundation, a New York-based charitable organization that rescues and nurses animals with inborn disabilities. The chihuahua does an excellent job and has raised various animals. She nurses, cleans, comforts and hugs them, acting as their mother and teaching them how to socialize, play and have good manners.
In addition to her role as an animal caretaker, MacKenzie also visits schools to educate kids about the importance of accepting physical differences in both animals and people. Her heart-warming and inspiring story makes MacKenzie a worthy receiver of America's top dog honor!
What can we infer about the American Hero Dog Competition
It was started by a charitable organization.
It was meant to honor caretakers of dogs.
It takes place every ten years.
It was first held in 2010.
Which of the following best describes MacKenzie
Talented and strong. B. Courageous and selfless.
C. Funny and friendly. D. Confident and picky.
In which aspect can students benefit from MacKenzie's visits
A. Learning from failures. B. Valuing physical health.
C. Understanding the disabled. D. Developing practical ability. 27.What's the best title for the text

“Clothes Swapping” has become an increasingly popular activity for women in the United States. The women can give away unwanted clothing at a clothes swap event and get something different in return.
Recently about 300 women went to a clothes swap at a high school in Springfield, Virginia. It was the largest crowd ever for the area’s popular clothing-swapping group.
Daphne Steinberg was having a good day. “For anyone who knows Ann Taylor LOFT, Ann Taylor is a really nice women’s designer and I will totally wear this to work. So I love that, I love that I can equip myself for work, have a good time in doing it, not totally bankrupt myself.”
Sandy Van Dusen likes the idea that clothes are finding new homes instead of being thrown away. “Because it helps to keep the Earth green. There’s no point in my opinion in continuing to buy new clothes when we can reuse what’s already here. Give it a new home— let somebody else love what you used to love and no longer love.”
Kim Pratt organized the clothing-swapping event in Springfield. She also organized a money-raising activity for the high school’s debate team. It is one of several ways that her group gives to charitable causes. Another is by donating all of the “un-swapped” clothing to shelters for victims of domestic violence.
“I started doing this four years ago, and we’ve been doing it for four years, getting bigger and bigger each time we have a swap.”
She used the social media website to help publicize the events. The website has helped her group grow from 30 members to 1300. Mrs. Pratt says most of the members respect the clothing swap rules. But she say competition for desirable fashion can be strong.
“We have to tell people sometimes not to hover over the new people coming in with their clothing. As they put it out, some people tend to grab the stuff right out of their hands and it becomes like a free-for-all. We try to avoid that as much as possible.”
At a clothes swap women what can women do
make some money by giving away unwanted clothing B. buy whatever clothing they like
C. have a social gathering and make friends D. exchange unwanted clothing for something different 29.What can be learnt from what Daphne Steinberg said
A. she got some nice clothes at the clothes swap B. the clothes swap was the largest ever in the area C.it was the first time she had been to a clothes swap D. she saved much more money than she had expected 30.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. How Kim Pratt started the clothing-swapping event. B. What Kim Pratt did with the un-swapped clothes.
C. How Kim Pratt raised money to help charitable causes. D. What Kim Pratt did to help people in need. 31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
clothes swaps often go out of control in the end
clothes-swapping is becoming increasingly popular with women
Improper behavior at clothes swaps needs to be controlled
more clothing swapping events need to be organized
D
The Indian government may use 3D paintings as virtual speed breakers(减速带) on major highways and roads, in order to check speeding and careless driving, and finally make its deadly roads a little safer. "We are trying out 3D paintings used as virtual speed breakers to avoid unnecessary requirements of speed breakers," India's transport minister Nitin Gadkari wrote.
The optical illusions(视觉错觉) are supposed to encourage drivers to slow down automatically. Earlier, India
had ordered the removal of all speed breakers from highways, which are considered to be a safety hazard for high- speed vehicles. India has the highest number of road accident deaths in the world. According to the World Health Organisation, over 200000 people are killed by road accidents.
The use of optical illusions as speed breakers was first pioneered in the American city of Philadelphia in 2008, as part of a campaign against speeding motorists. The technique has also been tried out in China to create floating 3D crossings. In India, cities such as Ahmedabad and Chennai have already experimented with 3D zebra crossings in the last one year. In Ahmedabad for instance, a mother and her daughter, both artists, have painted 3D crosswalks in the first few months of 2016. The artists say their motto is "to increase the attention of drivers", and that the concept has been successfully tested in accident-prone zones on a highway.
However, critics argue that once drivers know that these speed breakers are visual illusions, they may ignore them. Others also point out that India's decision does not consider the safety of a large number of pedestrians. In the end, the new policy may be just one step towards improving road safety.
Why are 3D paintings used on main highways and roads
To make the surroundings more beautiful.
To attract the attention of tourists.
To reduce the rate of traffic accidents.
To show the advanced technology.
Which of the following words is closest to the meaning of “hazard” in paragraph 2
A. Reminder B. Threat
C. Regulation D. Theory
What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4
The use of optical illusions as speed breakers is controversial in India.
Philadelphia is the second place to use virtual speed breakers in the US.
The idea tested in Ahmedabad recently has been a failure.
The new policy of 3D zebra crossings must be carried out. 35.What do we know about 3D zebra crossings from the text
They can immediately lower the death rate.
They have been widely used in India so far.
They are designed to increase drivers' attention.
They are welcomed by both drivers and pedestrians.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Abzu is a word from the oldest Sumerian stories, coming from the words “ab” (ocean) and “zu” (to know). Giant Squid, a US company, has named its newly developed video game ABZU. 36
In ABZU, players explore the ocean — a space that can be both alien and familiar at times. As the nameless diver, players explore the deep and see underwater life.
37 Players can press buttons to dive and travel around the seas. They can swim with fish. They can touch pools and awaken creatures such as sea turtles. Players can awaken more wildlife and make the waters richer with life.
But as they adventure through the ocean, players will discover more.
38
The developers used real fish and sea life and made some of the animals’ real-life behaviors in
the game. If players are sitting above these shark statues, they’ll see this circle of life as one fish eats another.
39 It is like watching a Discovery Channel nature show.
Further into the game, players will discover broken underwater robots, and these robots will open the path for the diver. The developers let the environment tell the background story and players find out the other mechanics (奥 秘) themselves. _40_
Many have played ABZU so far. They think although the game is a short adventure, it holds the promise to being something more.
They’ll see shark statues.
At first, the game seems aimless
You need to pay for the skills in the game at first.
They’ll see cleaner fish feeding around a shark’s mouth.
It can be played on Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Underwater games are always welcomed by many young people in the US.
Then, they’ll find underwater temples that hold the key to the main story of the game.
