“Hey,” said the boy whose name I couldn’t remember, sitting next to me. “Don’t worry. Take your time.” And so I did. But I still couldn’t correctly pronounce my Chinese name that was given by the teacher. I was so embarrassed on my first day of learning Chinese. I was so worried that I didn’t sleep well that night. I couldn’t stop thinking what would happen in my Chinese class in the following days.
I took Chinese classes during my summer vacation. Every morning I walked for 25 minutes to the class while having a Chinese pancake from one of the breakfast carts(推车)on the way. Learning Spanish in school was a cushy job for me, because I could speak French and Italian which helped me with it. However, learning Chinese was difficult at first. As a boy who was born in America and grew up in America, I knew nothing about the language and had no experience of learning the language. I chose it mainly because my goal was to work and teach home and abroad. It is necessary for me to master different languages.
As the classes went on, I slowly found that I was making connections. My 10 years of playing the piano has allowed me to perform for others. My several years of writing has led me to become a school reporter. I knew that my Chinese classes would allow me to speak Chinese well. As the teachers helped me build up the confidence, I soon began tasting the sweetness.
So what did my summer really taste like It tasted like the Chinese food that, for the first time, I did not order in English, my mother language.

When you are learning a language, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. When you read, you can not only learn some new words, but also learn how to use them. When you read a passage, it gives you a good example for writing.
Here are some good reading tips.
Firstly, try to read at the right level (水平). Read something that you can understand. If it is too hard for you, it is not interesting.
Secondly, try to understand the new words. If there are four or five new words on a page, don’t use a dictionary. Instead, try to guess their meanings as you read. Mark (标记) them with a pencil. Then look them up in a dictionary when you finish reading, and write them down in your own vocabulary book. Try to remember them.
Thirdly, try to read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes or half an hour every day is better than two hours every Sunday. For example, you can read before you go to bed, or after you get up or at lunch time.
Lastly, read something that interests you. Choose a newspaper, a book or a magazine about a subject that you like. It will be easy enough for you to understand.

They enjoy fireworks, lion dances, dragon boat races and many other traditional activities. The celebrations are also a bridge towards better understanding between Chinese and non Chinese.

As is known to all, “No farmers, no food.” Well, we now have a new day of celebration, the Chinese Farmers’ Harvest (收获) Festival. It’s the first in China created especially for farmers.
“The Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival falls on the Auturmnal Equinox (秋分) each year, starting in 2018,” said Han Changfu, the Minister of Agriculture. The Auturmnal Equinox is one of the 24 solar terms in the traditional Chinese calendar. In 2018, the Auturmnal Equinox fell on September 23, one day before the Mid-Auturmn Festival. It gives people in the city a great chance to travel to the countryside, enjoy the beautiful scenery and celebrate the harvest with farmers. Although climates and crops are different in many parts of China, the harvest time is usually in auturmn. This is why the government decided to celebrate this festival on the Auturmnal Equinox.
As a major agricultural country, China has the largest number of farmers in the world. And it can produce a large number of agricultural products every year. “I’m sure the festival will become one of the most popular and most important ones around the world,” Han said.

Work hours are different from one country to another. In France, people spend about 1,646 hours a year at work. In Japan, however, people work about 2,159 hours a year.
Why do people work so many hours Some people work extra hours because they want to make more money. However, many companies(公司)don’t pay overtime. Their workers don’t get more pay for more work. Some people think it’s their duty(责任)to work more hours. Some are afraid of(害怕)losing their jobs if they don’t work more hours.
Many people say that their vacations are too short. In France, people get five weeks of paid vacation a year. In Germany(德国), they get four to six weeks, and in the United States, two weeks. One study shows fewer than half of workers used all their vacation days. In Great Britain(英国), there is a saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull(迟钝的)boy. “If that is true, there must be a lot of dull people in the world.

At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can’t earn(赚)your own money Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting (织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Reisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!
Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology (技术) and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don’t have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.

Keiko, a Japanese girl, put up her hand first. “If it is a lower tooth, you should throw it over the roof of your house; if it is an upper tooth, you should put it under the floor. You should keep it and give it to your mother,” said Jack, a French boy. “Why should I do that ”asked Peter. “She will make it into a necklace(项链) for you to wear,” said Jack. Jorge, who was from Mexico, had some different advice. “You should take your tooth home and put it under your pillow(枕头) when you go to sleep,” Jorge said. “Why should I do that ” asked Peter. “Because the tooth fairy (牙仙) will come to keep your tooth and give you good luck. Sometimes she even brings a small toy.”
