Objectives:
Students will be able to describe physical appearance using adjectives.
Students will be able to ask and answer questions about physical appearance using "What does he/she look like "
Materials:
Pictures of different people with different physical appearances
Whiteboard and markers
Handouts with descriptions of people for a matching activity
Worksheets with pictures of people for a drawing activity
Warm-up:
Show pictures of different people on the board and ask students to describe their physical appearance using adjectives. For example, "She has long brown hair and green eyes."
Presentation:
Introduce adjectives related to physical appearance using pictures of different people. For example, "tall," "short," "thin," "overweight," "curly hair," "straight hair," "blue eyes," etc. Go through each adjective several times until students are comfortable with the pronunciation and meaning.
Model asking and answering questions about physical appearance using "What does he/she look like " For example, "What does he look like " "He's tall with short brown hair and brown eyes."
Practice:
Have students work in pairs to describe the physical appearance of different people using the adjectives learned in class.
Distribute handouts with descriptions of people and have students match them up with the correct pictures.
Have students work in pairs to draw a picture of a person based on a description given to them by their partner.
Production:
Ask students to describe a famous person's physical appearance using the adjectives learned in class. For example, "What does Taylor Swift look like " "She's tall with long blonde hair and blue eyes."
Have a few students share their descriptions with the class.
Assessment:
Observe students during the practice and production stages to assess their ability to use physical appearance vocabulary accurately. The written matching and drawing activities can also be assessed for accuracy.
Extension:
Have students create a character profile for a fictional character, including their physical appearance and personality traits.
Play a game where students take turns describing a person's physical appearance and the other students have to guess who they are talking about.
Have students research a famous person's physical appearance and create a poster or presentation about it, including pictures and interesting facts.
For homework, students can be assigned the following tasks:
Write a paragraph describing the physical appearance of a family member or friend.
Watch a TV show or movie and write a paragraph describing the physical appearance of one of the characters.
Draw a picture of a person and write a paragraph describing their physical appearance.
Interview a classmate and write a short paragraph describing their physical appearance.
Create a quiz for a friend or family member, including questions about physical appearance.
