Unit 7 It's raining
(Section A 1a-1c)
Grade level: 7th grade
Objectives:
Students will be able to recognize and use weather vocabulary in context.
Students will be able to describe the weather using simple present tense and sentence patterns.
Materials:
Pictures of different weather conditions (e.g. sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy)
Weather flashcards
Whiteboard and markers
Handouts with weather descriptions
Listening exercise worksheet
Warm-up:
Display pictures of different weather conditions on the board and ask students to name each one. Then, ask students to describe their favorite weather condition and why they like it.
Presentation:
Introduce weather vocabulary using flashcards. Show each flashcard and ask students to repeat after you. Go through each card several times until students are comfortable with the pronunciation.
Use the whiteboard to write different weather conditions and ask students to describe each one using simple sentences. For example, "It's sunny today" or "It's raining outside."
Distribute handouts with weather descriptions and have students match the description with the corresponding weather condition.
Practice:
Have students work in pairs to describe the weather outside. Encourage them to use complete sentences and describe the temperature, cloud cover, and any precipitation.
Play a listening exercise where students listen to a weather report and answer questions about the conditions. This can be done individually or in pairs.
Production:
Ask students to write a short paragraph describing their favorite weather condition. Encourage them to use descriptive words and provide reasons for their choice.
Have a few students share their paragraphs with the class.
Assessment:
Observe students during the practice and production stages to assess their ability to use weather vocabulary and sentence patterns accurately. The written paragraph can also be assessed for content and language use.
Extension:
Have students create their own weather forecast and present it to the class.
Use weather vocabulary in a role-playing activity where students act out different scenarios affected by weather (e.g. canceling a picnic due to rain, dressing for a snowy day).
For homework, students can be assigned the following tasks:
Keep a weather diary for a week. Each day, they should write a short paragraph describing the weather and how it made them feel.
Create a poster or infographic about a particular weather condition (e.g. thunderstorms, snowstorms) and include information about what causes it, how to stay safe during it, and any interesting facts.
Watch a weather report on TV or online and write down the information about the current weather conditions and forecast for the next few days. Then, write a short paragraph summarizing the report.
Practice using weather vocabulary in context by describing the weather each day to a family member or friend.
Research a famous weather event (e.g. Hurricane Katrina, the Blizzard of 1978) and write a short report about it, including information about the causes, effects, and any interesting facts.
