Grade level: 7th grade
Objectives:
Students will be able to order food in a restaurant using simple phrases and sentences.
Students will be able to use food-related vocabulary.
Materials:
Pictures of different types of food
Whiteboard and markers
Handouts with menu items for a matching activity
Worksheets with dialogue for ordering food
Warm-up (5 minutes):
Show pictures of different types of food on the board and ask students to name them. For example, "pizza," "hamburger," "noodles," etc.
Presentation:
Introduce food-related vocabulary using pictures of different types of food. Go through each item several times until students are comfortable with the pronunciation and meaning.
Model ordering food in a restaurant using simple phrases and sentences. For example, "I'd like a hamburger, please." "Can I have some fries with that "
Go over different types of restaurants and the types of food they serve. For example, "fast food," "Chinese restaurant," "Italian restaurant," etc.
Practice:
Have students work in pairs to practice ordering food using the dialogue provided on the worksheet.
Distribute handouts with menu items and have students match them up with the correct pictures.
Have students create their own menu items and practice ordering them in pairs.
Production:
Ask students to role-play ordering food in a restaurant in front of the class.
Have a few students share their favorite types of food and why they like them.
Assessment:
Observe students during the practice and production stages to assess their ability to use food-related vocabulary accurately. The written matching and dialogue activities can also be assessed for accuracy.
Extension:
Have students create their own restaurant menus and share them with the class.
Play a game where students take turns describing a type of food and the other students have to guess what it is.
Have students research the types of food commonly eaten in different countries and create a presentation or poster about it, including pictures and interesting facts.
For homework, students can be assigned the following tasks:
Write a short paragraph describing their favorite food and why they like it.
Create a menu for a restaurant they would like to open, including pictures and descriptions of the dishes.
Watch a video or TV show in English where people order food in a restaurant and write down any new vocabulary they hear.
Role-play ordering food in a restaurant with a family member or friend.
Research the culture of a country known for its cuisine and write a short report on what types of food are popular there.
