It was 4 o’clock in the morning. It was far too early to get up, and the idea of running 26 miles seemed (似乎) impossible. But I had trained for eight months, and I was going to do it. I got up, took a shower and had breakfast.
At six o’clock, I arrived at Dodger Stadium. The other runners of my running group were already there. When they saw the look of terror on my face, they laughed (笑) kindly. This was clearly my first marathon (马拉松赛跑). So many runners from all over the world came here for the race (赛跑). When I knew that I was just one of them, I felt a little better.
As I started to run, I tried to forget the pains in my body from training. I put one foot in front of the other and kept going. By mile 10, my feet hurt badly and I slowed down. By mile 15, I moved even more slowly. All the other runners moved forward and I ran alone. By mile 18, I was in my neighbourhood (街区). I wanted to turn down my street and go home, but I didn’t. By mile 22, there were only four miles to go. I told myself, “Don’t give up. Keep going!”

Each of the first-year students at the University of Waterloo in Canada gets a special kit (成套用具) when they arrive at school. Inside, they can find small things like earplugs (耳塞), chewing gum (口香糖), and something else they use every day. The idea came from Tina Chan. She studied at the university years ago. She says the kit is to help students deal with stress and anxiety (应对压力和焦虑).
“In high school, I was a very good student,” Tina Chan says. But in her first year at university, she found all the other students were also good, and this made her feel worried. Luckily, she got help, and she wanted to do something to help others.
She wanted to give the students something that they could use every day. She spent several months turning her idea into the kit. The kit is small enough to carry around during the day and it is very helpful. The University of Waterloo was the first to place an order (下单). “We care about our students’ health, and we feel the kit is good to our students,” says a teacher.
