ARED BANK, New Jersey (January 31, 2022). These days, women go to space. They sail around the world. They have all kinds of adventures. This wasn’t true hundreds of years ago. Back then, women were expected to stay at home. But that didn’t stop these three women from taking off and doing big things.
Jeanne Baret (1740—1807): Baret was a French scientist. She studied plants. And she was the first woman to sail around the world. In 1766, Baret wanted to set sail with a group of scientists. But they were all men. Women weren’t allowed to travel on French navy ships. So Baret dressed up like a man. And she sailed away.
Lady Hester Stanhope (1776—1839): Stanhope was from England. She wanted to travel. She traveled throughout the Middle East by herself. And she led an archeological(考古学的)dig there. She was the first woman to do this.
Nellie Bly (1864—1922): Bly was a reporter. In 1887, she wrote a story about hidden problems at a hospital. She dressed up like a patient at the hospital. Then she wrote an alarming six-part report. I bought a jasmine(茉莉花) plant for my office. When I bought it, I was told it would bloom(开花) and the sweet smell would fill my office. I had the plant for two months, and every day I looked at it, but there weren’t any flowers or pleasant smell. I was not happy, so I gave the plant to my friend Linda.
One day, another friend Mary called and invited me to her office. When I walked in, her jasmine flowers surprised me. I reached out to touch the flowers. Mary cut some and gave them to me. I couldn’t help smelling them. Surrounded by the sweet smell of only a handful of these flowers, I suddenly understood something. Mary bought her plant the same time I did. It took a year for her jasmine to bloom. I was so impatient for mine to bloom; regretfully, I gave it away. In a way my life is like the jasmine plant. I need to be patient and let things happen.
Last Sunday Linda told me that she was going abroad the next week. Before she left, she returned the plant to me. This time I am going to wait. I have learned that when we want something in our life, we have to be patient. I am slowly learning to have that patience to wait for my jasmine to bloom.

Every school day, we use schoolbags to carry all of our things to school. They are a big part of our lives. But have you ever thought about the history of the schoolbag

There were usually two or three layers(层)in the box. Kids put different things like books, brushes, ink stones(砚) and paper in the boxes.
Hundreds of years later, people developed a new kind of schoolbag called budai, or the “hip – pocket”. Budai was lighter than the bamboo box. With the founding(成立)of the People’s Republic of China, military rucksacks(军用帆布包)became popular. Many people carried them when they were in school. Ask your grandparents or parents about these bags. Maybe they can tell you about their experiences of carrying them when they were in school.
A new style of schoolbags has appeared in recent years. Many of them have colorful and fashionable designs(时尚的设计)on them, such as pictures of cartoons or pop stars. And they are more comfortable to use. Some students pull wheeled bags filled with heavy textbooks and others carry backpacks.

A middle school in Qingdao received a number of complaints(抱怨) from some parents recently after a P.E. teacher was appointed(任命) as a headteacher. The news led to heated discussions on the Internet.
Many people shared their opinions and stories online. Most of them expressed their support, saying that with less pressure of teaching, a P.E. teacher could pay more attention to the class and the students. And at the news, the Ministry of Education(教育部) said that any teacher in a school can be a headteacher and that their differences among teachers lie only in the subjects they teach.
P.E. is often seen as a less important subject and Chinese students spend more time on subjects like Chinese, math and English. Many people think it does not really matter whether students do well in the P.E. class or not. As a result, some parents believe that a P.E. teacher can’t be a good headteacher.
Does P.E. really not matter to students Of course not! It’s very important to students’ physical health.
And a strong body can help students study better. For this reason, the ministry also said more attention would be paid to P.E. classes. It’s a good move. The subject will be given as much importance as Chinese or math. In the examinations for high schools, the points for P.E. will rise to be the same as Chinese, math and English, and they should do it step by step so that parents can accept it.

24.The underlined sentence—“And a strong body can help students study better”—is used to ________.

With the Chinese language growing in popularity, the UK government plans to invest 10 million pounds to help more kids learn Chinese. Do you think it is necessary for UK pupils to learn Chinese
Seneca (Canada)
I studied French for 2 years in high school, and German for 4 years in college and got good marks. I studied Chinese for about 4 months before moving to China. Any language, if you don’t use it, it will be easy to lose. I’ve forgotten the French I learned except for a few phrases. I speak Chinese every day. My writing, reading and listening are quite good, but far from fluent. I think nowadays, it’s almost necessary to learn Chinese.
Tony (the UK)
Learning any language can be valuable, but it is not suitable for everyone, Chinese is a difficult language to learn and teachers in the UK are not good at teaching foreign languages. However, China is a big and developing market for English business people. For them, Chinese is worth learning.
Bill (the US)
I don’t think Chinese will become as widely spoken throughout the world as English. To learn Chinese, you have to devote yourself to learning how to write and read it. It’s too difficult to learn. But in the future Chinese will become more popular, and that is a good thing.

It was not expensive, only 1 yuan for one. If one child bought a sugar figure, many other children would crowd around and admire him.
TaTa Bubble Gum (大大泡泡糖)
Almost every kid is fond of bubble gum. They often gather together to see who gets the largest bubble. I still remember my cousin once blew a big bubble and then it broke, covering her face with gum! It was cheap. I could get 2 for 1 yuan.
Baby Face Ice-cream
We prefer to call it snowman ice-cream. It tastes very delicious. It was rather expensive, I remember the price was 2 yuan for each piece, which was not easy for me to buy them in those days. Each time I got one, the happiness would last for several days.
Malt Sugar Candy
Malt Sugar Candy is usually called Tangguar in northern China, and is offered during the days just before the Spring Festival. It’s delicious but cheap, and you could get five pieces for 1 yuan. My friends and I would get together to enjoy Tangguar. What a happy time!

As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.
Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a street light or car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains (窗帘) seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the dark would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination (想象) would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the “enemy (敌人)” would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get on the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or ▲ by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.
One of the processes (过程) of growing up is being able to realize and overcome (克服) our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.
