Since being introduced to chess at the age of six, Tanitoluwa "Tani" Adewumi has had one goal. He wants to become the world's youngest-ever grandmaster—the highest title a chess player can achieve. The record is currently held by Russian chess player Sergey Alexandrovich Karjakin, who won the title in 2002 at the age of 12 years and 7 months.
On May 1, 2021, the now 10-year-old Tani came one step closer to achieving his dream by becoming America's newest national chess master. The title, awarded by the US Chess Federation, requires players to get a rating of between 2200 to 2400. The boy, who practices for up to 11 hours every day after school, says the secret to his success is thinking of his plays ahead of time. Tani told NPR, "In a normal position, I can do up to 20 moves in advance."
The now fifth-grader fell in love with chess in 2017 after being taught the basics by a part-time teacher at his elementary school in Manhattan, New York. However, his mother couldn't make up her mind to allow him to join the school's chess club due to the travel and chess competition costs. The family of four were living in a homeless shelter and did not have extra funds to spare.
When his mother explained the family's situation to the chess club's instructor, Russell Makofsky, he immediately waived(免除) all costs for the young boy. Tani did not disappoint. Less than a year after joining the club, he had won seven awards. In 2019, the then eight-year-old, who was still living in a homeless shelter, made national headlines when he beat 73 competitors to win the New York State K-3 scholastic championship. His moving story went viral and a GoFundMe campaign, set up by Makofsky, helped raise enough funds for Tani and his family to move into a new house.
4. What's the main factor in Tani's success in his own opinion
A. Practicing chess for a long time every day.
B. Learning from national chess masters.
C. Thinking twice before making a move.
D. Setting up a role model for himself.
5. How did Tani's mother feel about his entering into the chess club at first
A. Proud. B. Undecided. C. Scared. D. Unbelievable.
6. What can we infer about Russell Makofsky
A. He managed to post Tani's story online.
B. He helped improve Tani's living conditions.
C. He became famous after Tani's winning awards.
D. He was disappointed at Tani's performance at first.
7. Which words can best describe Tani
A. Independent and helpful. B. Talented and hard-working.
C. Kind-hearted and grateful. D. Curious and creative.

Over the years, I've received a lot of advice from friends and family, trained professionals and books on how to get along with others and build strong relationships. Most of it is insightful and effective but when I'm caught up in the moment, I find it hard to apply what I've learned. This is especially true when it involves a multi-step process.
After analyzing(分析) many methods and experimenting in my own communication, I've found one simple rule that has helped me strengthen every one of my interpersonal relationships. This easy-to-remember tip is: Make the other person feel important.
No one likes to feel small and most conflicts happen when you make others feel unimportant whether you plan to or not. The key to getting along with almost anyone is to avoid actions that show you diminish others and replace them with actions that build up others. Actually, you can strengthen your relationships with many actions.
When you listen to someone, give him your undivided attention. Don't look around to see what else is going on or check your phone or watch. Take time to listen and react accordingly to show you're engaged. Make the other person feel like he is the most important person you're meeting with.
Nothing will make someone's face light up more brightly than showing real interest in him. Be curious and ask some questions based on what you hear. The more questions you ask, the better the communication will go, but keep in mind that you must be sincere. If you try to fake(假装) it, people can tell.
When it is possible, show that you consider the other person remarkable(非凡的). Find opportunities to praise this person as often as you honestly can. One mistake to avoid is making others feel more important by putting yourself down. This is never helpful so it's important that you lift others up in a way that you respect everyone including yourself.
8. What does the underlined word "diminish" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Take care of. B. Are fond of.
C. Think poorly of. D. Make use of.
9. What should you do when listening to others
A. Ask questions to show you are curious.
B. Show you are interested even if you are not.
C. Keep interrupting to show you are engaged.
D. Look around to attract the speaker's attention.
10. What is the author's suggestion in the last paragraph
A. Trying your best to lift yourself up.
B. Thinking highly of others honestly.
C. Respecting others' different opinions.
D. Putting yourself down to please others.
11. What is the author's purpose in writing this text
A. To offer some advice on getting along with others.
B. To call for people to be confident in communication.
C. To encourage people to improve communication skills.
D. To show the importance of interpersonal relationships.

Children may not be putting coins in piggy banks for much longer. With the move towards a cashless society, pocket money is going digital.
To reflect "the change", many mobile budgeting apps for children have appeared worldwide, such as gohenry, Osper, and Gimi. These apps offer a simple money management service for children, often for a monthly fee paid by the parents. Parents can add money to children's accounts, set limits and monitor transactions (交易). Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a prepaid card.
These apps aim to teach young children financial concepts (概念), such as budgeting, interest rates and income. For example, the Swedish app Gimi—with 1.2 million users globally—has virtual savings jars where children can deposit money. Parents can pay children interest as they save. There is also a chores feature, where parents can pay children for completing household tasks. The account is attached to a prepaid card that is currently available in Sweden only, but is expected to be launched elsewhere in Europe.
Philip Haglund, CEO of Gimi, believes the app can teach children responsible spending habits. "You don't become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It's more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents' money when you're 6 to 12 years old," he says.
But Catherine Winter, Managing Director of Financial Capability at The London Institute of Banking and Finance, warns people that while digital tools can help there needs to be a more organized approach to financial education. The area should "have regular, designed classroom time and ideally should be taught as an independent subject," she said. "Children would then have the right understanding to get the most out of both the apps and their money."
12. What does "the change" in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Putting coins in piggy banks.
B. Pocket money going digital.
C. Mobile budgeting apps springing up.
D. Paying for money management services.
13. What do we know about Gimi
A. It provides a prepaid card for free.
B. It pays children interest as they save.
C. It can be used only in Sweden now.
D. It can teach children concepts of money.
14. What do Catherine Winter's words mean
A. Digital tools can help a lot with finance.
B. Money management requires financial ability.
C. A regular classroom-based financial education is needed.
D. Children can get the most out of their money with the apps.
15. What's the text mainly about
A. The rise of the digital piggy bank.
B. The future of a cashless society.
C. The importance of financial education.
D. The popularity of money management.

We often take for granted(对……不予重视) the very things that most deserve our gratitude.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help her until I hit my teenage years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my teenage world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, my mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything Finally, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and shut the door. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation. "Tasha, would you like to know where we are going " Mom asked calmly.
"I guess..." I murmured under my breath.
"Sweetheart, we are going to a children's shelter. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you," she explained.
I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front hall, wind bells sounded peaceful while trees and flowers welcomed us. Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad.
My mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars such as cuts. What a terrible life they had had before they moved here! My heart sank.
Paragraph 1:
As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.

37.【答案】Paragraph 1:
As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl with a deep cut on her face smiling at me. Before I could look away from her scarred face, she greeted me cheerfully, "Are you Tasha I'm Ashley." Embarrassed, I managed a nod. She happily grasped my hand and shook it warmly. Her serious look but sweet voice touched me. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
Paragraph 2:
I returned to the shelter with my mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me. I felt sorry for what had happened to them and treasured the relationship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. Moreover, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was the most unforgettable and valuable lesson I learned that summer.
