I grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, and every morning, sometimes before I woke up, my dad left for work. I didn't know much about what my dad actually did all day. But one thing I did know about my dad's day was that he often spent his lunch break looking for books for me. He would often come home in the evening with a book for me in his bag. When he handed the "gift" over to me, I immediately investigated its cover, checked out the description on the back, and sometimes started reading right then.
I was not always as appreciative of those books as I should have been, especially in my younger years. One time, my dad brought home a paperback (平装书) called Bunya the Witch. I scanned the cover quickly before declaring (断言), "Ugh! It's just another stupid farm book," and dropping it on the ground. I was rightfully reprimanded for being an ungrateful kid, and I learned that valuable lesson about not judging a book by its cover—Bunya the Witch turned out to be one of my favorites.
As I got older, my dad favored books focused on strong young female characters, like Invincible Louisa by Cornelia Meigs, Up a Road Slowly by Irene Hunt, and Homesick: My Own Story by Jean Fritz, books I remember to this day.
It's not just the books themselves that stay in my memory. It's the girl reading them, and what she felt as she read. I think back to hours spent in my childhood bedroom, reading about young women who faced lives much more difficult than mine. I learned from their courage and drew inspiration from their bravery.
To this day, I love to read. I love the excitement of opening up a new book and getting lost in whatever story the author wants to tell me. And quite often, when I've read something really wonderful, the first person I pass it along to is my dad. I figure I owe him.
4. What do we know about the young author from paragraph 1
A. She asked for gifts every evening.
B. She was interested in books.

B. Never give up a book due to its cover.

One of the most popular street food found in China is no doubt the barbecue. A new series, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food cooked over hot coals on just about every street corner in cities and towns across the country. Barbecued meat is an important part of people's nightlife.
Shown on June 20, the series has had more than 80 million clicks on the video site . To find the most popular barbecue stalls (摊位), the production team travelled to more than 500 locations in 30 cities across the country. Some viewers compare Chinese Barbecue to Midnight Diner, a Japanese TV series telling stories from late-night informal Japanese bars.
"I'm happy to hear this comparison because Midnight Diner is a good program, and we share the same topic—night food," Chinese Barbecue's director Chen Yingjie said. "However, in terms of the tone, they are quite different." He said that Midnight Diner focused more on food itself, though there was some conversation while people were eating. In contrast, the night food scene of Chinese people means joy and a more lively spirit. People eating these barbecue snacks develop a feeling of connection, which can be a cure for loneliness.
The barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snack, is different from home-made food by mothers as that is a symbol of family and kinship. The barbecue is where you go to become connected to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather reserved and polite, the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship.
The world, as a whole, holds deep-rooted good feelings toward the barbecue, either for the taste or the warmth produced by fire. "What we should do is present the Chinese barbecue just the way it is because with its special ingredients (食材), ways of cooking, and more importantly, the special environment and people, the world will recognize it and might fall in love with it just as we do," said Chen.
8. What does Chinese Barbecue center on
A. The diverse street food.
B. The nightlife in large cities.
C. The barbecued foods across China.
D. The story of barbecue stall owners.
9. How does Chinese Barbecue differ from Midnight Diner
A. It focuses more on the diners. B. It has less conversation.
C. It shows the eating habits. D. It targets at the lonely.
10. What can be inferred about the barbecue from paragraph 4
A. It influences people's lifestyle.
B. It plays a role in people's relationship.
C. It is more delicious than home-made food.
D. It serves as formal business lunches sometimes.
11. Why did Chen Yingjie choose the barbecue as the topic of the series
A. To help the world understand China.
B. To research a special way of cooking.
C. To show the feature of Chinese food.
D. To introduce the history of the barbecue.
D
When you throw something in the recycling bin, do you think about what it could become And when you do, does it make you more likely to use that recycling bin Recently, a study was conducted in an effort to decide whether or not explaining to people what their recyclables are transformed into would help increase recycling rates.
The researchers started with a group of 111 college students, asked to draw on paper before watching one of three ads. One was a public service message that showed paper going into recycling bins. The other two also showed the paper either being transformed into new paper or a guitar. After completing a survey, the students were asked to deal with the paper when they left. Half of those who saw the first ad recycled their paper, while the recycling rate jumped to 80% for those who'd seen the other ads.
After doing a few more lab experiments, the researchers headed into the real world. At a party, volunteers spoke with attendees (出席者) about recycling, with half mentioning transformed products and half keeping it general. They discovered the subject of the talks came into play. After the game, the recycling and trash bags were weighed. Those who received a message recycled over half of their waste, while those who did not recycled less than a fifth.
All this is to say that details matter. People want to know what treasures their trash can become, and when that's laid out clearly, they're more likely to do it. Perhaps recycling companies should redesign signs to describe the items (一件商品) being created. Recycling is far from a perfect solution, but it doesn't hurt to manage to improve its rates.
12. What contributes to the higher recycling rate
A. Telling people to throw litter into bins.
B. Reminding people of recycling's benefits.
C. Making recycling standards much clearer.
D. Describing the method of paper recycling.
13. What does the underlined part "came into play" in paragraph 3 mean
A. Took off. B. Broke down. C. Sprung to mind. D. Had an effect.
14. What does the author advise recycling companies to do
A. Find perfect ways of recycling. B. Examine the details of items.
C. Show the sources of products. D. Sign the names on the items.
15. Where is the text most likely from
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A novel. D. A magazine.

37. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Randy Heiss was hiking in the large expanse of land behind his farm in Patagonia, Arizona, a town near the border between the US and Mexico when he came across a curious site. A bright spot of red that was once a balloon was caught in the grass and to it, attached by a piece of string was a note.
On the top was written just one word—Dayami—while inside, was a numbered list of things in Spanish. Even though he could not read Spanish, 60-year-old Randy smiled. Decades ago, as a child, he too used to do the same.
It was a list of birthday gifts she longed for. Randy lost his only son nine years ago. He wouldn't have grandchildren in the future, so he hoped he could do more for Dayami, like his granddaughter. He reasoned that the balloon had been sent from the nearest city across the border, Nogales, but there was still a problem even if his assumption was right—Nogales has a population of a quarter million people. How could he possibly continue from here
He tried the Internet hoping to see if anyone would respond to his post but drew a blank there. With Dayami's birthday drawing near and time running out, Randy then got in touch with the local radio station in Nogales, Mexico, Radio XENY. Really wanting to help after hearing about his need, the radio station played the scenario (方案) out on air and within 24 hours, called Randy back.
With the radio station setting the time for the two to meet the next morning, Randy took the day off from work and rushed to the local Walmart. With the help of his wife, he translated the items on the list—clothes, art supplies, a doll and doll set—and bought everything they could find and a few extra stuff as well after finding out that 8-year-old Dayami had a 4-year-old sister.
Paragraph 1:
The couple packaged all the gifts.
