For many people, barbecues are a chance to enjoy a meal with family and friends. For Stan Hays, however, barbecuing becomes his skill to feed people in need when the disaster happens.
The unique effort began in May, when a severe tornado (龙卷风) hit Joplin, about two hours from Hays' home. His wife asked him to help. So, he put out the word to his partners and headed down with his barbecue. "We thought we'd be there three to four days, serving maybe 5,000 meals," Hays said. But the need was there, so Hays and over 300 volunteers worked for 11 days to meet the need.
It was a life-changing experience for Hays, who had never organized any type of large voluntary effort before. While preparing to head home, he and his friends Will Cleaver and Jeff Stith came to the realization. "A barbecue community is able to respond to disasters like this quickly," Hays said. "So, before we left, we put together a plan to create the Operation BBQ Relief."
During the last eight years, the group has responded to almost 60 disasters across the United States, including Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and the wildfires in northern California. More than 6,800 volunteers have joined the effort, and the group often partners with other organizations to serve the meals.
"Barbecues are comfort food," Hays said. "If you just lost your house or a loved one, getting a hot meal would remind you of the barbecues you had in the backyard and make you forget about the bad stuff in your life. That's worth it to me."

The world's first-ever floating (浮动的) farm is expected to open soon. The farm is located in Rotterdam, a port city about 50 miles away from Amsterdam. Built near the mouth of the river Meuse, the farm consists of three levels.
About 40 cows will be moved to the second level of the farm in November. The level above them will house greenhouses that grow grass and crops needed to feed the cows. Meanwhile, the bottom level will hold any necessary machines and packaging for the milk and yogurt. By December, the farm is expected to be producing more than 200 gallons of milk per day.
In addition to producing fresh milk and yogurt, the farm produces and sells fresh food that runs through a closed cycle and ends up at the customer. This causes almost no waste, bringing the reduction of food's travel from production to consumers.
The farm is the idea of Minke van Wingerden, a partner in the development company behind the project, Beladon. In 2012, she and her husband got caught in Hurricane Sandy during a business trip to New York City. With the storm preventing food delivery trucks from getting on the road, local people were unable to find fresh produce in stores.
The event pushed Wingerden and her partners to find a way to produce food closer to people's locations in order to avoid losses of supplies in the future. They eventually came up with the idea of floating farms, which would make use of otherwise unused space in the water and meanwhile shorten the distance between stores and farms.
After starting the Rotterdam project, Beladon will work on opening more floating farms. The company is designing floating chicken farms and floating vertical (垂直的) farming greenhouses. The company is in talks with another Dutch city for a second farm.
Wingerden and her husband also believe that new communities should be built with food access in mind. The area by the Port of Rotterdam, for example, is on track to be filled with residential space and offices in the next several years, and Wingerden said food production should be at "the heart of that community".
8. What do we know about the floating farm from the text
A. It is a farm without any grass or plants.
B. It can produce more milk than expected.
C. It has three levels with different purposes.
D. It is planned to be used in certain climates.
9. What is the advantage of the floating farm
A. It offers custom-made food.
B. It cuts the cost of shipping.
C. It plays a role in recycling wastes.
D. It acts as a shelter in a hurricane.
10. How did Minke van Wingerden get the idea of the floating farm
A. With the help of the scientists.
B. Through her personal experience.
C. By getting encouraged by the news.
D. By making research on the technology.
11. What can we infer about the floating farm from Wingerden's words
A. It makes it easier for people to get food.
B. It saves more residential and working space.
C. It helps people learn about food production.
D. It improves the attraction of new communities.
D
One reason why robots will never fully measure up to people is that they lack human-like social skills. But researchers are experimenting with new methods to give robots social skills to better interact with humans.
The experiment was carried out by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The team developed a machine learning system for self-driving vehicles that is designed to learn the social characteristics (特征) of other drivers. The researchers studied driving situations to learn how other drivers on the road were likely to behave. Since not all human drivers act the same way, the data was meant to teach the driverless car to elude dangerous situations.
The researchers say the technology uses tools borrowed from the field of social psychology (心理学). In this experiment, scientists created a system that attempted to decide whether a person's driving style is more selfish or selfless. In road tests, self-driving vehicles equipped with the system improved their ability to predict what other drivers would do by up to 25 percent.
In one test, the self-driving car was observed making a left-hand turn. The study found the system could cause the vehicle to wait before making the turn if it predicted the oncoming drivers acted selfishly and might be unsafe. But when the oncoming vehicles were judged to be selfless, the self-driving car could make the turn without delay (延迟) because it saw less risk of unsafe behavior.
The MIT team plans to expand its research model to include other things that a self-driving vehicle might need to deal with. These include predictions about people walking around traffic, as well as bicycles and other things found in driving environments. The researchers say they believe the technology could also be used in vehicles with human drivers. It could act as a warning system against other drivers judged to be behaving badly.
12. What is the purpose of the experiment
A. To reduce human drivers' mistakes.
B. To develop a machine learning system.
C. To give robots human-like social skills.
D. To prove robots can never replace humans.
13. What does the underlined word "elude" mean in paragraph 2
A. Avoid. B. Monitor. C. Investigate. D. Record.
14. What caused the self-driving car to wait or turn quickly
A. The traffic lights.
B. The road markings.
C. The human drivers' directions.
D. The oncoming drivers' driving styles.
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. More traffic participants will be involved in the research.
B. Walkers and cyclists will be invited to join in the project.
C. New rules will be developed for road users.
D. Human drivers will make way for robots.

On New Year's Eve, seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was $ 2.99, white bread, 89 cents with a 10-cent discount. Leaving the cashier, he thought that he had saved 80 cents today.
At the exit, the wind made him think of his gloves. "Where are they " Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of his coat. George made a second search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $ 35.00, ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable (耐用的). He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked as if they had been new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting from the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be nothing. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.
"Society has changed and people have changed," he said to himself. "Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost."
Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two people he saw did wear gloves, but one was women's and the other not black.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer, wearing black leather gloves.
