When it comes to the most famous 20th-century painters of the United States, Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself, "I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me." No one could have had a more active old age.
She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12 she left home and was in domestic service until at 27 she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands became too stiff(僵硬的) to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time.
Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930's and her death, she produced more than 1,000 pictures: careful and vivid descriptions of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. "I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it," she said.

A group of wandering wild elephants, called "The Northbound Wild Elephant Eating and Walking Tour", have become an overnight Internet sensation(轰动) in China and globally. The pack first caught the attention of the locals in March 2020, after they suddenly left their home in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve.
While the original group was made up of 16 Asian elephants, two decided to return home after a week. The rest have continued their journey northward. Since leaving the reserve, the elephants have walked over 310 miles (500 kilometers). Along the way, they have searched farms for food and water, walked through urban streets, and even paid a visit to a car shop and a retirement home. Thanks to the government officials, no animals or people have been hurt. However, the elephants have destroyed more than $1 million worth of crops.
Researchers are not sure why the elephants decided to leave or where they are headed. While they are known to leave their habitats in search of food, this is the longest migration(迁徙) of wild elephants recorded in China. Because of the extreme distance traveled, some guess that the elephants may wander off. Elephant expert Chen Mingyong told Xinhua News Agency that the herd's leader possibly "lacks experience and has made the whole group get lost".
However, other scientists think the elephants were forced to move due to cutting down or burning the trees. Successful efforts have almost doubled the elephant population in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve and the surrounding regions. However, their natural habitat has been reduced to make room for agricultural development.
The wandering herd's search for a suitable home has not gone overlooked by the millions of locals that eagerly follow their daily movements on social media. Adam Chang, assigned(分配) to deliver food to the elephants, said, "Before this meeting, I just felt curious about animals. Now, I think I would volunteer in animal rights groups to protect those giant creatures."

Children may not be putting coins in piggy banks for much longer. With the move towards a cashless society, pocket money is going digital.
To reflect "the change", many mobile budgeting(预算) apps for children have appeared worldwide, such as gohenry, Osper, and Gimi. These apps offer a simple money management service for children, often for a monthly fee paid by the parents. Parents can add money to children's accounts, set limits and monitor transactions(交易). Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a prepaid card.
These apps aim to teach young children financial concepts(概念), such as budgeting, interest rates and income. For example, the Swedish app Gimi—with 1.2 million users globally—has virtual savings jars where children can deposit money. Parents can pay children interest as they save. There is also a chores feature, where parents can pay children for completing household tasks. The account is attached to a prepaid card that is currently available in Sweden only, but is expected to be launched elsewhere in Europe.
Philip Haglund, CEO of Gimi, believes the app can teach children responsible spending habits. "You don't become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It's more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents' money when you're 6 to 12 years old," he says.
But Catherine Winter, Managing Director of Financial Capability at The London Institute of Banking and Finance, warns people that while digital tools can help there needs to be a more organized approach to financial education. The area should "have regular, designed classroom time and ideally should be taught as an independent subject," she said. "Children would then have the right understanding to get the most out of both the apps and their money."
12. What does "the change" in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Putting coins in piggy banks.
B. Pocket money going digital.
C. Mobile budgeting apps springing up.

A. It provides a prepaid card for free.
B. It pays children interest as they save.
C. It can be used only in Sweden now.
D. It can teach children concepts of money.
14. What do Catherine Winter's words mean
A. Digital tools can help a lot with finance.
B. Money management requires financial ability.
C. A regular classroom-based financial education is needed.
D. Children can get the most out of their money with the apps.
15. What's the text mainly about

We often take for granted(对……不予重视) the very things that most deserve our gratitude.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help her until I hit my teenage years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my teenage world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, my mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything Finally, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and shut the door. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation. "Tasha, would you like to know where we are going " Mom asked calmly.
"I guess..." I murmured under my breath.
"Sweetheart, we are going to a children's shelter. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you," she explained.
I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front hall, wind bells sounded peaceful while trees and flowers welcomed us. Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad.
My mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars such as cuts. What a terrible life they had had before they moved here! My heart sank.
Paragraph 1:
As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.

37.【答案】 As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl with a deep cut on her face smiling at me. Before I could look away from her scarred face, she greeted me cheerfully, "Are you Tasha I'm Ashley." Embarrassed, I managed a nod. She happily grasped my hand and shook it warmly. Her serious look but sweet voice touched me. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
I returned to the shelter with my mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me. I felt sorry for what had happened to them and treasured the relationship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. Moreover, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was the most unforgettable and valuable lesson I learned that summer.
